The improved AI is also felt on defense. Dumping the ball to Patrick Ewing would cause the opposing team to send help from different spots on the floor, but the AI never over-committed, opting to fake the double-team attempt and go back to their man. This realistic defensive tactic made it difficult to know when to pass or continue to post up.
Defensive rotations have also undergone an overhaul. The AI does a better job of disguising where they will bring help, creating more unpredictable defensive sets. The AI also defends passes better, more eager to jump passing lanes or tip a pass to create a fast-break opportunity.
I asked this specifically to Rob and he said it was not in the game. But what I did notice is there are Way more bounce passes in the game at proper times. Passes into the post felt more realistic because the game seemed like it knew when to use the bounce pass more effectively than in any other NBA 2k game I could remember.

Cool this is what I wanted to hear. I am one of the few that would prefer the game to decide when to do a bounce vs. Lob. Think of it like this you are on a 3 vs 2 break, bring up icon passing you then would have to do some special combo of the icon button and another button or trigger to initiate a bounce vs Lob to the person you wanted to pass to. It seems like it would be cumbersome IMO. The AI should be smart enough to get this part right. A few f those gamescom videos had some of the nicest lobs when somebody was fronting the post.
Seen any blocks like the one in the trailer? Bill Russel type block where the center actually JUMPS up to try and swat it?
I can't remember the specific instance but I do remember seeing center leave their feet to block my shot though none of the blocked shots when into the crowd so i didn't see the fans react but I was told that's in there. Rob specifically told me to run one of my guys into the scores table to see him jump into the crowd. That was cool. Oh and mascots will shoot shirts into the crowd this year and the fans will react (I know that's not really hardcore gameplay but I nice presentation touch)

There are outlet lob passes in the game. So you won't see every outlet pass look like it was shot out of a cannon and there's more loft to it which is more realistic considering they're trying to pass over the defense.

wait...so live balls can be interactive with the fans? does that mean if a pass went flying to the crowd that they will throw it back to the ref? nah...
by chance did you hear the commentary? how does the crowd sound? they are way to inconsistent in 2k11....they cheer at the right times but then if i make a big play its just silent...

The ball is live. I didn't see any balls go into the crowd but I was told fans will react to it when it goes toward them. Didn't ask if they would throw it to the ref. I only played the first quarter of about seven games (I tried to play with as many teams as possible) so the choice crowd sounded good but the action didn't dictate them going nuts so early. I also had the sound down a little because I was recording the interview (audio only). They wouldn't let me record gameplay.
Thanks Czar. I'm trying to remember as much as possible but I sat and talked with Rob for like an hour, which cut into my playing time but I love talking hoops. Starting debating about D-Rob vs. The Dream.
how about the old school coaches? are they in? personally i couldn't tell you who the coaches were but its still a nice little detail to have.
Good question. I'm racking my brain trying to remember if they were in there. I don't want to give you a definitive answer if i don't know for sure. Sorry man.
So Jr, contest is more contextual now, but does the players still jumps unintendedly when doing the contest against fakes ?
Let me depict you my problem, so you may likely recognize if you saw what bugged me happen in your limited time with the game:
Lets say a post shot were to be taken and I pressed the hands up contest, oftenly in 2k11, my player would "jump" with one hand up ... in the paint that sometimes resulted in a shooting foul or in a block, thus the point was that the player jumped without me wanting him to do so.
The above problem was kind of passable because of the narrow space (unless I faced a fake shot spammer), thus it reached to a bothering degree when it occured in the perimeter, while the likelihood of a shoot were about to happen ... I went with my defender to try and "contest" the shot by pressing the hands up (not the swat/block/jump button, again) and my player would just jump with one hand up ... this had 2 really bad consecuences for something I didnt intended: the opponent either got a shooting foul or he drove by me as I was in the air.
Finally, while you were on contest mode in the paint, did you player felt like some physical presence, or was it like last year, kind of no existant when the opponent could still do a layup pushing you back while the animation ran ?
P.S:
I know what you told me DaCzar (which honestly conforted me, a lot), but just reading what JR said abut the 1 hand animation, made me fear that the jumping is still in the game ... contest is putting your hand(s) up only without your feets leaving the floor (basic defense 101) ... and jumping is just trying to block or alter a shot by in mid air ... I am a contest guy and dont want my player to unintendedly jump.

When I was under the rim i used the hands up method and i didn't get fouls called against me. When I was contesting a jumper on the perimeter it was usually a closeout situation and i opted for the Y button which felt like it was more contextual. I do remember drives near the rim had a lot more contact which would adjust the shots and not always create a foul. Another highlight for me was when i was defending a pick and roll but not defending the ball but instead the roller. It felt way easier to bump the roller which stopped his cut to the rim. When I saw this i paused the game and pointed it out to Rob and told him how crucial it was, especially when trying to defend the 7-5 my player cheesers.
He also said people who spammed the ball fake would not be nearly as successful and said they have something to combat the 7-5 guys too.
Hope this kind of answers your questions.

The thing is guys is that most if not all of the body snatching animations in the paint have been removed. It had nothing to do with you raising your hands you were jumping even if you were running away because of the 2 player contest animations. LOL it's a different game in and around the basket because of this.
Did you happen to come accross any shot blocking from guards JR2424? Guys like Wade, Jordan, Pippen and KB are/were especially talented at it.
I didn't get any blocks but I know the Ai got me a couple of times on the perimeter. There weren't any chasedown blocks when I played but I know they still have them. I didn't play with or against the Heat (I regret not doing that). I was trying to see as many teams as possible before the guys had to leave. The one thing that stood out to me on the perimeter was that quasi pushoff animation when you play tight on the ballhander. I know the guys here love those little things and those kinds of things were everywhere. I'm trying to remember all of it so i can share it with you guys. Hope that helps a little.
Doing my best. This is the first year I got a hands on preview so i have been on the other end of these hoping to get my question answered. I will do my best answering these questions as best I can. Love the passion of this site and just glad to give real fans of this series whatever info I can.

So true. The contact near the rim is a huge addition. I loved backing down with Moses Malone. He was battling for post position. So was Hakeem's, who would also come up and set a screen without me calling for one. Oh and off topic, they have Hakeem's face down pat.
The homescreen menu is the same but they tweaked the team selection menu visually. Can't really describe it because I don't totally remember it but it did look a little different. Czar, please correct me if any of the info you see is wrong. I'm trying to remember this and I don't want to give the community incorrect info. Thanks.
