People really think that marketing will matter?

lol

It's Madden football. They could put literally nothing on the cover other than the name Madden and people will buy it.

If the game is good I don't care if Harpo Marx is on the cover.

If.

IF.

Why? People purchase the game for what's inside, not outside.

Never bought a game for what's on the cover.

OMG, wow, Fitz and Troy P. on the cover. First time 2 athletes are on the cover. Need to rush out and buy that.

LOL YES !!! Harpo Marx Reference! Love it! Sadly his name is fading from pop culture, in 10 more years nobody will know who that is. Sort of like Jimmy Durante

The marketing won't change one bit, there will still be commercials, banners, and regardless of who it is, there is still an NFL player on the cover.
This post is exactly what EA is thinking about. I don't remember them actually marketing their cover athletes big time besides Brees and McNabb. I don't remember them really doing much with Alexander, Favre, Young, etc. Usually they just end their commercial with that person's in game model scoring a TD or celebrating. Not much else.

The Joke is on EA? Come on now...They just got the whole country in on a Madden cover vote in April. More people have been talking about Madden for the last month than they did all year last year. This has been all over twitter, facebook, radio, news, and OS. This was a brilliant marketing strategy by EA. It doesn't matter to them who won. If it did they wouldn't have been in the original field.

Also don't underestimate the number of Browns fans. Add that to the anti-Vick fans and there you go.

No the cover doesn't matter that much, but it is the marketing campaign surrounding each release of Madden. The campaign won't work if they don't have a popular guy to get the hype going for the "casual fan". For us here at OS it doesn't matter which guy is the Madden guy for this year but for the broader audience it sure matters.

And this cinderella story works right now but come august nobody (at least all the guys outside of this forum) will remember this tournament and how hillis got on the cover. They'll just ask themselves who the hell the guy on the cover is when they see it.

And this. EVERYONE knows what Madden is by now. The cover player doesn't have as much of an impact (if any) as some people think it does.

That wasn't the official cover they revealed on the show, was it? That thing looked terrible.

Probably the only time a Cleveland Brown will ever be on a Madden Cover.

Never met a Madden casual player who says, oh man, Brett's on the cover, gotta go get the the game. They want the game of football as much as the people on OS.

The cover athlete does not impact the sales of the game either way.

Dear EA,

I will now buy the game.

NDAlum

LOL @ many of the replies. Typical responses!

I actually know a couple people who were going to buy Madden 09 that year just to have it because Brett was on the cover. They didn't even own video game systems. Then Favre went into superdouche mode, so they didn't.

Obviously that's the exception to the rule and means nothing, I just thought it was a funny story.

This is clearly something to laugh about. There is no way in this world that Mike Vick wouldn't "fairly" beat Hillis in a voting system. 2004. Florida.

You are mistaken. It's clear that there was a substantial number of non-Browns fans who chose to vote for Hillis simply because he wasn't Vick.

Exactly. It's the "NFL". That name in its own right gets you millions upon millions of dollars even if the game sucks. It doesn't matter who is on the cover, if the game is good people will buy it, if it sucks peopel will STILL buy it. And if kids really love playing football games they will buy it because, they still know they can play with Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, or Chris Johnson etc. It's not like because, they see Hillis on the cover they think it won't be a good game or can't play with the superstars they love.

Kids will look at that cover and maybe think well that guy sucks, who is he I don't see him on SportsCenter almost every week but, they'll just shrug their shoulders and ask their mommy or daddy to buy it anyway.
