Sigh. An article about the Hillis Vick? You missed what I was aiming at. But that's not really surprising.

The only guy's in recent memory who cleared the curse were Favre and Brees. I even thik Vince Young got hurt (knee) after his cover year....and yeah lost the starting gig!

Maybe I am wrong.

Farve was shipped out of Greenbay and Brees got embarrassed by a team that supposedly had no business looking at the saints in the playoffs.

But to say that the cover/packaging of the game is irrelevant isn't accurate at all. Otherwise companies wouldn't spend millions on advertisement and branding of their products. And I would be jobless as well.

From a visual standpoint, I'm sure many of us here at OS wouldn't mind buying a copy of Madden 12 wrapped up in a plain dvd case with nothing to show for as long as the game was outstanding. But from a marketing standpoint, that's not the case for the average consumer. Bringing guys like Kobe, Jordan and Favre to grace a game cover is expensive. Companies doesn't like to loose money. They do it for a reason.

I don't think 2K sports is planing to sign Matt Booner for be the cover guy of NBA 2K12 anytime soon.
I really appreciate this post.

I have to go on a rant about how many people think this is such a bad thing and all the other things people are say about this. Also, before I start I must say that yes I did vote for Hillis and yes I too probably agree that Vick is more deserving and Vick is a better player and I am even a Vick fan.

However, cover athletes mean absolutely nothing and have no bearing on the actual game. It means nothing at all on who is on the cover. It will be the actual game that is selling not the guy that is on cover.

Secondly, to those that say this is going to hurt EA and all that stuff, you are probably EA haters anyway so why aren't you happy Hillis is on the cover?

Thirdly, we all should be happy Hillis is on the cover, because it is showing us (the fans of the game) that we have some control on the game and that we can affect the game. What, I mean it's showing that EA can and will listen to us on what they should do.

Lastly, I must say that from what I've read there seems to be some racial things being said about how Hillis is on the cover because he is white. I for one am appalled at the level of what seams to me to be racism over the outcome of the cover vote.

I also sense someone is going to say something like, "you are just an annoyed Cleveland Browns fan" or something like that. If anyone thinks that they are clearly really unobservant as my screen name is pittsburgher86 and I am clearly a Pittsburgher and very much a fan of the Steelers.

I doubt I missed what you were aiming at. You feel cover athletes impact sales, and I don't.

The article backed my opinion, that's all.

This years was a different voting process. Not who was most deserving, but who was most popular.

If people don't want Vick on the cover because they have their own personal hate agendas that is fine (although ridiculous), but then give it to Aaron Rodgers or Clay Matthews, not some guy who had 1 above average season playing against teams with absolutely ludricous rush defense.

Gimme a break please, here...now.
Can you objectively define a set of standards which determines who "deserves" being the cover athlete more so than any other football player in the NFL?

Not exactly. You said you've never bought a game based on the cover. I responded talking broader than just a madden cover when your statement sounded that way. Covers matter. Maybe not so much for madden but they do.

Well when your the only NFL game being sold you can get away with anybody on the cover. I never knew about this guy peyton hills untill today. I never payed any attention to browns games. I hope he is able to survive the curse.

Honestly, didn't ever know who the hell Hillis was before this.

Ah, ok, I see, your were going broader than Madden. CD and DVD's probably not so much for me. I don't buy the music I like because of the CD cover and DVD's for movies, if a particular movie peaks my interest, I may rent it.

Food is about the only advertising that might affect me that I can think of.

Bottom line, it's up to each individual if they allow cover art to influence their purchasing power. Not me deal, though.

I find it hilarious that two New York fans have no idea who he is. This is because New York is the only city worth paying attention to right?

Guy wasn't even a top ten rusher last year. Was 11th, 6th in TD's.

Just dumb. Least deserving player ever, it's not even close.

The OTHER Peyton, who plays in Indianapolis, hasn't even been on a cover.

It's just silly. It doesn't make me mad, I'm not "hatin'", it's just dumb and silly. It's a joke. Being on that cover was something you earned. Being a pretty-good player for one season wasn't enough.

Totally different voting process this years means you can throw everything about the previous covers out the window.

This years wasn't about most deserving, it more about who is most popular.

Dont blame EA, blame the fans who voted for him.
I dont think Peyton Manning wants to be on the cover of Madden. He was on Gameday 03.
I dont have a problem with Hillis on the cover. I never bought a game for a cover. I wasnt going to buy the game anyway. If Franchise and Superstar mode is tremendously improved, I will consider buying it

I can't believe Hillis is on the cover. I bet half of the casual fans in the country have never watched him play.

You would think it EA would be better off to use a player from a popular team (Steelers, Cowboys, Giants, Jets) instead of a pretty good player from on of the worst franchises in the League over the last decade or so.

I guess you guys can keep crying if you want, but it's not going to change anything. Peyton Hillis is on the cover because of the fans.

[AlDavis] Peyton Hillis is a great playah. Deal with it.[AlDavis]
