NASCAR The Game 2011 News Post

I received the game this morning at 9 AM. Please keep in mind, I have only raced 4 times so far and practiced at another.

I am going to answer as many questions as I can that have already been asked, then will keep posting impressions and answer as many questions as I can. I have my PS3 in my office hooked up to the same monitor as my PC, so I have to switch over, so If I don't immediately respond to something, it's because I am on the PS3.

On to the questions, from the other topic.

I wanna know how are the Graphics compared to NASCAR 09? I really can't get a good grasp from the videos. Thanks.

IMO the graphics are a bit better than NASCAR 09. NASCAR 09 was a nice looking game, but I think NTG11 does a better job here. There is a very natural, organic look to it, almost like MLB The Show has. The color palate is there, but it's not too crisp, or overdone.

The car models are nicely executed, and tracks look beautiful.

1. I think we are all wondering about the difficulty of the game and if what we saw in the videos was on some easier level. Is the game more realistic than what the videos may have lead us to believe?

2. Is there a true career mode, or is it just a season, and how does that work?

3. Do you get the sense that you are at 30+ different tracks, or does it feel like most of the tracks run about the same?

1. I set the difficulty for the AI on the highest at Tally, Daytona, and Texas. They were very competitive at Tally and Daytona, and Texas were just better than me....flat out! What I really like so far about the AI, is that they are aggressive, but not cheap. They understand that you are also on the track, and try to be cautious of their surroundings. They did bump draft with me at Tally and Daytona, and I could do the same with them...and there was no sign of them being disturbed by it.

2. Have not jumped into career mode as of yet, but will give it a run as the day progresses.

3. There was a nice difference in the feel from Atlanta, Texas, Daytona and Tally. They didn't feel that same at all, and based off early impressions, they did a nice job trying to individualize and realistically replicate each track.

Pre-race presentation-Is there a full pace lap with the driver/grid position rundown like EA did a few years back? Very tv-style touch that was very nice. Also, any featured drivers pre-race?

Wreck/caution-how long is it between the wreck, caution and going into the pace lap? Time enough to 'go thru' the wreck if it happened up in front and you're in the back of the pack, or just 'there's a wreck' and then two seconds later in the caution lap?

Keep in mind, I have not done season or career, but in "race now" option, there was no pre-race or any presentation. It literally took you to the race about 100 yards away from the start finish line.

In regards to wrecking, you get to watch the whole wreck. It doesn't take you away to a cut scene instantly. I was in one at Tally, and it seemed like it lasted 20 seconds, and I was in one at Texas, and it only lasted about 10 seconds. Then it gives you the option to pit under caution...if you choose no, it takes to a few seconds before the green flag drops again.

I am very curious about the realism of the track surface. For example, Are there bumps in on the lowside of turns 1 and 2 at Las Vegas? Do the bumps upset the car and make you create a setup that can handle those bumps?

That leads to my other question. How much does messing with the setup actually change the feel of the car? When the track rubbers up, does the car get tighter?

From what I have seen, the bumps feel like they are barely noticeable. I felt a little bit at Daytona in turns 3 going into 4(keep in mind its still Daytona 10 on my copy) but nothing that really forced me to white knuckle the wheel at all. When an AI car gets into you, you notice that a lot more than any bumps on the track surface. If you're hoping to really feel the surface bumps and have it effect the car....probably not going to be real happy.

I will say the the driving model is really well done though, and you truly feel connected to the track surface.

Ok, going to go test some more, and try to get some photos, but videos may be very difficult. I am trying to find a way to do it right now. I will be back in a few to answer some more questions and give some solid impressions.

Look, I know this is a 2011 thread, but just a quick question..don't get all pissed off. Just please answer a youngster's question.

In Nascar 09, when you sign with a team in career mode, lets say Hendrick Racing...do you finally get to choose what number you wanna be, or do you still have to stay in the 100's?

Once again, sorry to ask..but all the 09 threads are down.

Nascar 09 Career > Nascar 11 Career

So uhhhh...

I can't keep my car in a straight line at Daytona, either with the wheel or the controller. It's way worse with the wheel, and I currently have FF turned off so I don't screw my wheel up.

Why does my car weave back and forth on the straightaways? I can't run on Very Hard there because I get spun out by the cars flying by me because I can't run a straight line.

So I put the game on Hard (playing with no assists) load my Daytona setup in career and, uh, this...

happens.

WHAT IS GOING ON.

I go ahead and run the race (10 laps) and I win by 2.8 seconds. The closest anyone gets to me is the start of the race. I never had to race or fight anyone.

How can this be claimed as acceptable? I just don't understand...

203? Wow, I'm lucky to get up to 191 qualifying. As to the weaving, I know my car pulls to the left, and I actually have to lean a little right on the straightaways to keep it straight, but sounds like you might be having a bigger problem than that.

That's the thing, I didn't go that fast. Or, rather, I shouldn't have. I didn't do much besides lower it a tad and I messed with 2 shocks. That's it. I have no idea how (or why) my car "went" that fast, but it's annoying.

And as for the swerving, it's worse than the "gotta turn 15 degrees to the right", the car literally goes where it wants down the straightaway, and I'm along for the ride. It's like I'm in a car with a drunk driver while on ice. I hate it, and they ruined restrictor plate racing for me because I can't even keep the car straight, let alone draft with someone. Dumb.

I need help, usually I'm very able to play racing games with controllers, but with this game I can't steer to save my life.

While turning I either steer too hard and fall below the yellow line or I steer too little and hit the wall which trying to balance them usually ends with me hitting someone and spinning out.

Blue, a couple more bugs I hope you have already mentioned or can mention whenever you talk to somebody important:

1. Are they working on the damage we get from bump drafting? My front end looks like tin foil after one lap of just pushing somebody

2. When the hood gets flipped up over the windsheild (very awesome to see) I think if we keep it to a certain speed that should prevent it from flying off... I was actually in practice and I wasn't even moving- I was just aweing at the sight of it and then it blew away..

EDIT: One last thing- was just bump drafting and tried the slingshot and the driver actually rammed me into the wall... can you check and see if the computer knows that bump draft = good contact and not bad contact?

I know this is a lot- but it would be cool if the AI cars would sustain a longer bump draft, its literally a few seconds then they back off for me

Thanks again

Are you on PS3 or XBox? For PS3, unless you're a serious driving gamer and want the top of the line, the Logitech Driving Force GT is a solid choice for about $125. Otherwise, you can go all out on the G27.

I'm with you on this. Charlotte is waaaay too wide, it feels like driving at California almost. Kinda lame.

Charlotte does seem too wide. Fun track to drive though! I still cant believe they put the pits on the wrong side of pit road at Watkins Glen!

This was because they would have had to recapture animations as well as remodel all 43 cars to put the fuel tank on the other side among other things. Not a big deal, imo. I can life with that.

That makes sense... either way Im enjoying this game a ton.
Be glad when they fix the caution issues and pit road ai. Hard to run a long race with those issues. Ive been in the paint both and racing short online races more than anything anyway.

More updates to Dave's checklist / blog on fixes. We'll see what happens whenever we get the patch. IF the major issues get fixed, I'm going to give mad props to the development team. One of my clients is a major retailer so I know that the marketing / sales team sometimes drives deadlines (e.g., release dates) and there are times when things don't get done right because the deadline has been established but from a technology / support standpoint, it's an unreasonable deadline. Let's hope that these guys have the ability to fix these things.

Does anybody know how to save videos? There is a slot for them in the "Race Media" portion of the game but I cannot figure out how to save them.

Here's another scheme I made last night and today. Again, it's kind of plain, but I'm not completely confident in my abilities on the paint booth yet.

I also have tail-lights on the rears of the cars now, and the ones I have were surprisingly easy to make.

Nice. Like the car.

I'm not as up to speed with actual track layouts, but I always feel like they aren't wide enough. I've seen real races 4 & 5 cars wide, but on this game, I feel like if there are ever three wide, we are really crowding each other.

You have to put numbers on via the "Text" method...so go through the menu like you're going to put text on the car but instead put on a number. You can only do it one at a time (just like text) so I've found it's best to create a decal for the numbers.
