Madden NFL 11 News Post

I recentely sat down for a talk with FBGRatings.com's Dan Berens to discuss his site's vision and what's going on over there today. The site is currently working on getting accurate ratings for every player using real hard data converted into the Madden ratings universe. Dan claims that when these numbers are plugged into the game, it plays much better and much closer to real life. Check out the interview below and also check out Dan's website to see what he's got going on!

I was checking out the site and it looks really interesting. I just have a couple of questions:

1. Is there any way to download these rosters for use on the 360 or do they have to be updated manually?

2. Is there a date set for the next update? I'd like to try these out in M12, but I don't want to edit all the players only to find out a new update is about to be released.

1. No.

2. Early August. Players will typically be updated the beginning of each month.

Thanks for the quick response. The rosters look great.

Hey man, let me start off by saying thanks, these ratings saved Madden for me. They play some great games, I just have one question...how do you determine the SPC and CIT of receivers? Specifically AJ Green...granted I'm a little biased being a Bengals fan and Georgia fan, but his seem a little low imo...I'd appreciate it if you could enlighten me..

The great thing about these ratings is they are completely UNBIASED. Everything you see is the culmination of both raw scouting data and measurable data. For WRs, the scouts use two ratings that are pretty close to one another, but may differ widely. These are qualified as the "Catch under duress" and "Hands in tight spaces" categories. Both are independent of one another, but many players are either good or bad at both. These correlate to the SPC and CIT ratings you see in Madden. Catch under duress is the same as saying how well a receiver can adjust to and make a difficult catch while the hands in tight spaces attribute is a bit more obvious.

All of these ratings require skill AND consistency. The averages for a WR are around 66 for each category, but it differs for other positions. A.J. Green is above the average for a WR completing one season. He had some really nice grabs last year and will only improve. In fact, I would expect those two attributes to receive increases next as he is already a solid route runner. His consistent performances will determine it, however.

First off Dan---love the rosters and the effect it has on gameplay. I am curious about why you have never posted updated 360 and PS3 rosters with your edits included. Is that not the purpose of this project? I mean no disrespect but it would seem to me that you would create more of a following if they could actually try your rosters out----without having to input all this data. I only did 3 teams and it is a pretty monumental task. Also, no mention of how to update incoming players while in franchise mode so the fit your ratings scheme Again, thanks for your efforts and insight.

The point of the project is to rate players according to real life NFL scouting data and interpolate that data into Madden ratings. What people do with the information I post is up to them so long as they don't infringe upon intellectual copyrights. I am in talks with a group of guys for roster production at this time, but there are not any plans for roster creation this year, especially with the closed nature of CC. If/when roster editing is opened back up, then we can think about doing something. For now though, that portion of the project is on hold.

DCEBB2001, I used your ratings for Robert Griffin III. I just have one question regarding the reason for his trucking to be a 99; just curious on the effects on gameplay.

Thanks

He graded out very highly in his ability to move forward when initiating contact...not just for a QB, but as a runner regardless of position. I addressed the issue with the rookies earlier in the thread. Since they do not have any games in the NFL under their belts we have to rely more on college scouting info and attempt to project how he will grade out in the NFL. For Griffin, I believe the expectation will be that he will grade out very well as a runner but will struggle as a passer. The good thing is that the ratings are so dynamic and change so often that he will most likely see that rating and others that are way up there drop, while the ratings on the lower end will rise. This will eventually place him near the positional mean. However, until that information against NFL competition is compiled, we have to rate players off of that projection.

Thank you, that makes sense. He is fun to use, but makes some head scratching throws; lol.

Like I said the ratings will be updated pretty often so you will just have to keep track as things go on, espcially with these rookies. In fact, there should be another update this weekend as camps are now underway.

Out of curiosity, can you link me to how you evaluate the "soft" skills where there isn't direct physical data to correlate it to?

There is no link for this information. This information is what allows me to evaluate the dynamic, position-specific, attributes for each player. I cannot divulge this information per an NDA agreement with the informational provider. I can tell you how players are roughly evaluated but I cannot get into details. I hope you understand.

The provider being the company you referenced in your Speed related post?

TSX does not provide my NFL scouting material. They merely power my site, offer web assistance, and provide me with rookie scouting information, all of which is available for free online.

Nice! Damn...how come you weren't chosen as a Game Changer?

I was not chosen because I did not apply to be one. I don't know the process or what you have to do. I am not even really sure what one is or what they do with EA. Odds are that things are so messed up there anyway that my ideas would simply be bounced. I have also heard that EA is very adept at pumping people for information then using such information to change the game without actually hiring anyone. That kind of turns me off to such endeavors.

Actually, EA has hired three people, that I know of, from OS.

AJ, Chase and Christian McCloud.
