NHL 11 News Post

EA Sports NHL 11 demo is now available on Xbox LIVE and the PLAYSTATION Network. Powered by a revolutionary real-time physics engine, the franchise that has won 22 sports game of the year awards over the past three years will showcase two game modes in the demo: Battle for the Cup and the all-new Hockey Ultimate Team.

Battle for the Cup:

In Battle for the Cup, players will experience all the emotion and drama of the third period of Game 7 of the Stanley Cup™ Championship between the Philadelphia Flyers and the Chicago Blackhawks. The mode features an all new faceoff system, new quick dekes and the ability to score amazing goals even while lying on the ice.

Hockey Ultimate Team:

The all-new Hockey Ultimate Team brings Online Dynasty play to the EA SPORTS NHL franchise for the first time ever. In the demo, players will be able to pick up a starter pack of cards to build their Ultimate Hockey Team. Take your new team to the ice and play against either the Canadian Hockey League’s Windsor Spitfires, or the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks and Philadelphia Flyers. Play and win games in the demo with your Ultimate Team and earn up to two additional packs in the full version of NHL 11, when it is released on September 7, 2010.

The demo will also feature an interactive tutorial that will allow those new to the franchise to learn the controls, and allow long-time fans to practice some of the new controls in the game, including Faceoffs.

Anybody notice on Casual you don't change lines? Is that something new?

Also, do you know what play style they use for on-line? I assume they use "default" or "normal".
No, we didn't talk about game speed. I think online uses the "normal" game style. Maybe Redshirt can confirm next time he stops by.

The Demo feels much more realistic than NHL10, the new dekes are good, new faceoff system is great! After the first hip check, I was like WOW! It was better than I expected, can't wait to buy this game, I will look if I can pre-order the game from a local store.

Just won a game due to a broken stick.
Was losing 1-0 and in the last minute pulled my goalie, but lost the puck on the offense, the the guy is going to shot the puck into the empty net and the stick breaks i go on the counter attack and tie the game, the went on to win in OT.
I am really enjoying the demo.

There's not a simple answer to this because it depends what people mean when they say "game speed".

The game speed slider is a global effect that controls the update rate of the game. Make it higher and everything happens faster. For a few reasons the online game speed is locked, so it won't change this year. But the top, non-hustling speed of players is lower now, so it depends what you mean by "game speed". The global adjustment to the speed everything happens is the same. The normal top speed of the player is a bit lower but the maximum speed while hustling (and not fatigued) is a bit higher.

I think the game speed is perfect this year, no changes needed IMO.

Lower ? That's not really what I wanted to hear as NHL 10 online speed was so slow I never was able to adjust to it at all. All the players felt like they were skating through sand.

The game speed is something which I think is perfect this time around (although having the freedom to change it is of course the best for everyone)

So the demo speed that it is locked on will be the default speed for the game? Including on-line? Am I interpreting this right?

Also, what game "style" is on-line set to? (Casual, Default, Normal, Hardcore)

Thanks Redshirt!! You guys have the best sports series on the market today!!

I think the "game speed" of the demo is too slow. It feels like a shinny game rather than NHL game. This is the "tempo" of the game only. The speed difference between players etc is really well done and keeps the game honest and not a high score fest.

That's what has impressed me the most and quite honestly I didn't think that we'd ever see this accomplished. Why do we see nothing but cross-crease and glitch goals and wraparounds etc. tried all the time in NHL 10? because just doing a normal hockey play doesn't work. If you could score at an average rate in NHL 10 by simply getting your player into the slot and firing a wrist shot the scores would be 21-20.

NHL 11 demo shows me that the developers REALLY know what they are doing. They made it so much more difficult to get to the high quality scoring areas that they could then allow for these goals to happen and not make the game a score-fest. By focusing on making it harder to get quality chances they could then tailor the game to play more like real hockey. I for one am thuroughly impressed by what they've done.

biggest thing for me, one of the reasons why i didn't buy 10, after owning 09 for a while. (indeed it happened in that game)

was the robo goalies, the magnetic saves, the almost toally random "fingers crossed the ai allows me to score this game" feeling. i hated that the comeback ai would just fire in a laser as my goalie would sit like a dump, and on the other end my top corner shots were being caught without any difficulty.

the demo so far helps negate that lack of control feeling (the worst feeling you can have in a sports sim imo) by leaving it to real time physics.

you can see the puck was saved because the shot went there, and the goalie put his glove in the right place in a realistic fashion. when i score it feels like i hit a spot that was impossible to stop in that instance, not that this time the ai allowed the puck to go in. which is how it felt in nhl 09 and 10 for me anyway.

im thinking there will still be come comeback ai and lack of control feeling, which will definitely get on my nerves, but real time physics helps to aleviate it a bit, as there no puck warp, or Neo style matrix saves from what i can see.

I love how at the end of the fight, it shows BOTH guys getting a penalty, as opposed to simply showing an overlay of the home guy getting a penalty.

Absolutely agree!

What would really be nice is if the full version showed facial damage after the fight....bloody nose, split lip...heh

It gives me hope that coincidental roughing minors will also show the two guys getting the penalty, and not only the home player.

I'm thinking that the "loose puck" feel on the CPU's stick will help eliminate this feeling. I don't think there was necessarily "comeback" last year as much as the CPU just didn't make mistakes when passing or shooting. From playing this DEMO, I've seen more loose pucks which is a good thing.

I would also like to see the rest of the players ON ICE during a fight. As soon as one starts, every aspect of the game is removed and the focus is only on the two players. We need the players on ice and the crowd into it, beating on the glass and yelling!

It does; I had a delayed slashing penalty coming to me, and once the play was whistled dead, the opposing player tried a little post-whistle push and shove, and when they called the penalty, they showed both my slashing penalty, and a roughing penalty for the opposing team, with both players on screen at once.

if its the first person fighting that causes the framerate drop, they should just go back to the fighting in nhl 96 on the genesis. The first person fighting is brutal. Hopefully next year they get rid of that and go back to fighting like 2k series had, or the old genesis 96 version.

i like the fighting too, i think its the most visceral compared to any past nhl game.

im not wanting a fighting sports sim, we have fight night for that you just want to experience the atmosphere and feeling of it as a side note to the great nhl game. and ea have in my opinion executed it perfectly.
