Re: NHL 11 Demo Available Now, Post Your Impressions Here (360, PS3)

Just won a game due to a broken stick.
Was losing 1-0 and in the last minute pulled my goalie, but lost the puck on the offense, the the guy is going to shot the puck into the empty net and the stick breaks i go on the counter attack and tie the game, the went on to win in OT.
I am really enjoying the demo.

There's not a simple answer to this because it depends what people mean when they say "game speed".

The game speed slider is a global effect that controls the update rate of the game. Make it higher and everything happens faster. For a few reasons the online game speed is locked, so it won't change this year. But the top, non-hustling speed of players is lower now, so it depends what you mean by "game speed". The global adjustment to the speed everything happens is the same. The normal top speed of the player is a bit lower but the maximum speed while hustling (and not fatigued) is a bit higher.

I think the game speed is perfect this year, no changes needed IMO.

Lower ? That's not really what I wanted to hear as NHL 10 online speed was so slow I never was able to adjust to it at all. All the players felt like they were skating through sand.

The game speed is something which I think is perfect this time around (although having the freedom to change it is of course the best for everyone)

So the demo speed that it is locked on will be the default speed for the game? Including on-line? Am I interpreting this right?

Also, what game "style" is on-line set to? (Casual, Default, Normal, Hardcore)

Thanks Redshirt!! You guys have the best sports series on the market today!!

Re: NHL 11 Demo Available Now, Post Your Impressions Here (360, PS3)

I think the "game speed" of the demo is too slow. It feels like a shinny game rather than NHL game. This is the "tempo" of the game only. The speed difference between players etc is really well done and keeps the game honest and not a high score fest.

That's what has impressed me the most and quite honestly I didn't think that we'd ever see this accomplished. Why do we see nothing but cross-crease and glitch goals and wraparounds etc. tried all the time in NHL 10? because just doing a normal hockey play doesn't work. If you could score at an average rate in NHL 10 by simply getting your player into the slot and firing a wrist shot the scores would be 21-20.

NHL 11 demo shows me that the developers REALLY know what they are doing. They made it so much more difficult to get to the high quality scoring areas that they could then allow for these goals to happen and not make the game a score-fest. By focusing on making it harder to get quality chances they could then tailor the game to play more like real hockey. I for one am thuroughly impressed by what they've done.

Re: NHL 11 Demo Available Now, Post Your Impressions Here (360, PS3)

biggest thing for me, one of the reasons why i didn't buy 10, after owning 09 for a while. (indeed it happened in that game)

was the robo goalies, the magnetic saves, the almost toally random "fingers crossed the ai allows me to score this game" feeling. i hated that the comeback ai would just fire in a laser as my goalie would sit like a dump, and on the other end my top corner shots were being caught without any difficulty.

the demo so far helps negate that lack of control feeling (the worst feeling you can have in a sports sim imo) by leaving it to real time physics.

you can see the puck was saved because the shot went there, and the goalie put his glove in the right place in a realistic fashion. when i score it feels like i hit a spot that was impossible to stop in that instance, not that this time the ai allowed the puck to go in. which is how it felt in nhl 09 and 10 for me anyway.

im thinking there will still be come comeback ai and lack of control feeling, which will definitely get on my nerves, but real time physics helps to aleviate it a bit, as there no puck warp, or Neo style matrix saves from what i can see.
