NHL 11 News Post

EA Sports NHL 11 demo is now available on Xbox LIVE and the PLAYSTATION Network. Powered by a revolutionary real-time physics engine, the franchise that has won 22 sports game of the year awards over the past three years will showcase two game modes in the demo: Battle for the Cup and the all-new Hockey Ultimate Team.

Battle for the Cup:

In Battle for the Cup, players will experience all the emotion and drama of the third period of Game 7 of the Stanley Cup™ Championship between the Philadelphia Flyers and the Chicago Blackhawks. The mode features an all new faceoff system, new quick dekes and the ability to score amazing goals even while lying on the ice.

Hockey Ultimate Team:

The all-new Hockey Ultimate Team brings Online Dynasty play to the EA SPORTS NHL franchise for the first time ever. In the demo, players will be able to pick up a starter pack of cards to build their Ultimate Hockey Team. Take your new team to the ice and play against either the Canadian Hockey League’s Windsor Spitfires, or the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks and Philadelphia Flyers. Play and win games in the demo with your Ultimate Team and earn up to two additional packs in the full version of NHL 11, when it is released on September 7, 2010.

The demo will also feature an interactive tutorial that will allow those new to the franchise to learn the controls, and allow long-time fans to practice some of the new controls in the game, including Faceoffs.

I'm hooked, on the demo. I messed with the 09 and 10 demos a bit, never anything too seriously. I just played this bad boy for the last two-ish hours. I can't wait for the full game. It's going to be so awesome.

So where's this new toe drag?

Best thing just happened...

I was back on D. I tried a poke check on a forard (Carter I think) coming in on me, he put the puck between my skate and stick, lifted his over his head, regained control of the puck and proceeded to go around me. He then undressed Niemi and scored an unbelievable goal. I absolutely love that the CPU will put dekes/move on you in NHL 11. That was my biggest complaint about NHL 10. You could ALWAYS line up a hit in 10. In NHL 11 I've already missed some hits that have resulted in 2-on-1's or 2-on-0's.

Well, being that I'm without an Xbox for a couple weeks due to the RROD, the only impressions I've been able to gather have been from the 4-5 Youtube Vids I've seen.

In short, the game looks and sounds fantastic.

The physics are not over done, the presentation and atmosphere are noticeably enhanced, and the moments the game provides are truly immersive.

I saw a disallowed goal on a breakaway that was just awesome. I loved how they showed a few replays before the refs came back from the phone. This is the stuff that makes games addicting and that will provide tons of replay value over the next year.

BTW, I sent my Xbox to Texas yesterday and its already there. So I might get a quick return. ...for real.

...would be cool if we couple swap goal horns around. Hmm...Classic Goal Horns, maybe?!?!?!

one thing I don't like and i'm not sure if it's just me.. but the line change menu seems to pop up so slow for me..

Yep, just heard it again. It's way off. WTF, last year at least it was fairly close!

Oh well, if that is my only complaint, and custom goal horns are in, I don't really care.

I just had a disallowed goal. Getslav was driving the net and lost the puck right at the crease and he had a slight kicking motion as the puck went in. Awesome to see. They showed replays from a few angles and the ref went to center ice to wave it off

Damn Navy lol....I'm stuck out to sea for the week so I can't download the demo

You guys are making me anxious to get the Demo!

Thanks for confirming what I was thinking...seems to be a bit of a delay before it pops up...

For sure, way harder than last year, but I think with some slider adjustments it could be good again...need to reduce the cpu shot accuracy for sure, and manual passing sucks...

Anyone know if you can change the game speed? I looked in the settings but didn't see an option.

I think the problem re: the line changes and strategy lag is the little graphic they added. When you bring up the menu, there is a quick "materialize" animation that really throws off the timing, IMO.

Played with authentic puck size & shadow. Shots really feel like you rip them now. I feel like Niemi is VERY tough to beat in this game though. Moreso than any of the goalies I've faced during HUT or Leighton (obviously)

One awesome feature (finally!) is that you can pull your goalie during a stoppage in play and he will already be out pre-faceoff. It was ludicrous that this took so long to implement but thankfully it's finally there.

Has anyone seen injuries yet or are they turned off?

I managed to score 5. Two from the point (screened) one rebound goal, and two one timers (by the circles, top shelf). I agree though, once you see space, it's gone within seconds. Now if we could only change the sliders...

My impressions:

Good:

- authentic puck size
- physics on hitting is so much better
- broken, dropped sticks is just too cool
- cpu is much more aggressive on the attack
- been waiting a long time for face off strategy, and it's been done great
- nice to have more dekes
- am I crazy or is hustle done automatically? I'll be controlling my player and he's just going all out and I'm not clicking L3...

Not so good:

- scored a weird goal in OT where I hard slapped the puck into the offensive zone with Pronger and it somehow went off the back boards and into the net...it surprised me and happened too fast for me to see how it actually went in, too bad instant replays aren't accessible. Probably just an anomaly.

- was hoping the fighting engine would of been tweaked a little...but that's whatever

- line change options come up slower than last year

- hate manual passing but sliders will fix that

I injured one guy off of a slapper. The puck hit his leg, he went flying into air then fell to the ice. Play was stopped shortly after.

No, it's there but it's locked

I put up my NHL 11 demo impressions on my website:

http://www.puckgamer.com/nhl-11-demo-impressions/

I like it. It feels like a significant upgrade over NHL 10.

It does seem WAY to early to be playing hockey though. (it was 100 here today!)

Thanks guys - that's reassuring. I've bombed slappers into guys, pounded guys into the boards and done anything possible to injure someone, but with no luck!
