NBA Elite 11 News Post

Gamespot has posted an interview with David Littman, Creative Director for NBA Elite 11.

Quote:
Gamespot: "There's a new shooting mechanic too, one that sounds a bit like the skill stick in the NHL series. How will it work?"

David Littman: "In real life, shooting is skill based. Players practice every day to become better shooters. In basketball video games, shooting has not had much skill attached. Sure there is some skill to get it to your best shooter who is open for a shot, but that is more strategy than skill. Once a player shoots in almost every basketball game ever made, it is up to player attributes, how open he is, an under-the-hood formula, and a tiny bit of when you release the button to determine if the shot will go in. I do not feel very satisfied when I make a shot in basketball games. With the new shooting mechanic, it is all skill based, but at the same time it users player attributes. If you have played Tiger Woods golf, you have an idea of what the shooting mechanic is.

The shot is based on real life. You move the right stick up to start your shot and release it to release the ball. You have control of the accuracy and the distance. If you move the RS perfectly up to 12:00, your shot will go straight. If you miss left, the ball will go left. Miss it right, and the ball will go right. When you release the ball will control the distance. Release early, and the shot will be short. Release late, and the shot will be long. The system is so realistic that you can do manual bank shots by purposely aiming left or right and a bit long."

For an early build I agree...the one thing i like about Live/Elite is that most player models look like their real-life counterpart

The Elite teams members should throw out terms like "stale", "tired", "engine", "canned", "skill based", "User controlled" over and over again. A lot of people here are susceptible to certain buzz words.
I can't tell you how many times those words were used by both the community and team members during our trip.

Friendly reminder folks game comes out in October, it June now....

Wow this is unexpected I would have never imagined the system would be like this.. I cant wait to try that out myself.

This whole interview gets a WOW!! from me.. controllable euro steps, steal swipes while moving backwards, analog stick movements during replay..

I'm excited I just hope it looks as great in motion and in my hands as it sounds on paper.
this is all on NBA 2k10

graphics are identical to Live 10. That is to be expected. They are obviously spending most of the dev cycle on controls, animations, and physics and have no time to mess with the graphics. The game will most likely be identical to Live 10 in terms of the graphics.

Once we got to this generation of consoles graphics for me got narrowed down to three categories, good, great, and outstanding. So this is one area of the game that I don't think about at all.

We have no idea how the A.I. is going to be, so there is no point even speculating about it now.

Now the shooting controversy(for lack of a better word) is something that can be discussed.

The defunct baseball series High Heat had a sim slider for hitting that ranged from "0"-total User based results, to "10"- total Stats based results. I would always keep that slider at 7 or 8. I wanted my abilities to have some affect on the outcome of hits, but not to where it allowed a player to play radically different from his real live abilities.

As others have mentioned, I am concerned that this new mechanic in Elite will allow a mastery of shooting that could never happen in reality.

From what I understand, this ironically kind of happen in Live last year-"Moe Williams glitch"-, but that seemed to be a bug, and not a design decision.

It makes me wonder if a game like the one Ray Allen had in game three, now becomes impossible due to too much User control.

Will there be something in place that simulates those times when a player is just "off" with their shot. Or will the User be able to just always be money when he gets open looks.

even if that was the case, which is not, that's perfectly fine considering how great '10 looked.

Live 10 didnīt look great, thats a fact

And i agree with the guy that you quoted, In my opinion, EA should make an objective list, and on those the main priority for this year should be gameplay, because that is what Hardcore basketball lovers liked more in live 10, in comparison to 2k, mastering the real time phisic feature this year, and making huge strides in visuals, next year, it is a 2 year "main" project, Elite 12 will probably be the best basketball game ever, just my prediction

feel free to disagree, but most people (including me), think that the player models, graphics, and overall art direction were top notch in Live 10. Your opinion isn't a fact.

we'll see how it pans out in the coming months

np

Top notch??? In bball gaming or sports in general???

My opinion is that bbal games visualy are the worst when it comes to sports games, and I am including Soccer, that has a bigger pitch to recreate(on and off it), I am not bashing, for me itīs a fact, live has the player models, the players face, and the crowd pretty accurate, in these 3 aspects they are better then 2k, but for example the fact that every dunk looks soft, with the backboard not coming down a little, 2 examples in wich 2k are better, in my opinion, are the coach/referee, animations, they move allot, thing that makes the game alive of the court makes it more real, and what for me is a deadly factor why people/reviews say that 2k is better (visually), is the reflections on the court, it is an aspect that at 1st, people say it is cool but not very important, but when you see it close, it makes it all more appealing in the eye.

Before my message is misinterpreted, I compared Live/elite and 2k, but did not pot 1 above the other, they both have nice things, but as a package, in my opinion, they are both under the average sports game (graphics)

And thats why, I think the main focus this year, of elite, is going to be gameplay (mastering the real time physics feature), and of course changing some really important things, like commentary (already confirmed) and possibly Espn overlay (not confirmed YET(I hope)), making huge stride in terms of aspect of the game, without making huge improvements on the actual players, court, coach, referee, crowd, ect look.

I donīt give the graphics major importance, gameplay is what keeps me playing the game, but for me it is not correct to say, that visually NBA live 10 is top notch, especially if you have played other games, I mean, it is correct to state your opinion, but that opinion looks like wanting to defend Live 10, you can say that major improvements have been done, but top notch??? really.....

But as you said, lets see what will bring the next few months....

Their version of the "shot stick" definitely has me intrigued. Being able to manipulate the distance and trajectory of your jumpers is eerily similar to shooting in real life. If they can bring all of these elements together in a nice package, this may be the year I switch.

The gameplay is really looking intriguing but I really hope they beef up the game modes as all EA's other sports games had so many different modes and they were really just feature rich. NBA live paled in comparison to a game like Fifa 10 which had so many other modes that would keep you busy for a very long time. It would be nice to see modes like "Be-A-Pro" from Fifa , implemented in Elite 11 and maybe a street ball type mode.
