NBA Elite 11 News Post

Gamespot has posted an interview with David Littman, Creative Director for NBA Elite 11.

Quote:
Gamespot: "There's a new shooting mechanic too, one that sounds a bit like the skill stick in the NHL series. How will it work?"

David Littman: "In real life, shooting is skill based. Players practice every day to become better shooters. In basketball video games, shooting has not had much skill attached. Sure there is some skill to get it to your best shooter who is open for a shot, but that is more strategy than skill. Once a player shoots in almost every basketball game ever made, it is up to player attributes, how open he is, an under-the-hood formula, and a tiny bit of when you release the button to determine if the shot will go in. I do not feel very satisfied when I make a shot in basketball games. With the new shooting mechanic, it is all skill based, but at the same time it users player attributes. If you have played Tiger Woods golf, you have an idea of what the shooting mechanic is.

The shot is based on real life. You move the right stick up to start your shot and release it to release the ball. You have control of the accuracy and the distance. If you move the RS perfectly up to 12:00, your shot will go straight. If you miss left, the ball will go left. Miss it right, and the ball will go right. When you release the ball will control the distance. Release early, and the shot will be short. Release late, and the shot will be long. The system is so realistic that you can do manual bank shots by purposely aiming left or right and a bit long."

I am not going to speculate or hate on this game without seeing something substantial first. Right now this game on paper seems like it is going to be great. We need to see it in action first.

I'm not going to put anything into those screen shots because obviously they're early but it does sound interesting/different. One of the things that I liked was that the ball is "loose". I always feel like the ball already has a predetermined destination before you shoot, pass, rebound, etc., but it was a little better in Live 10. I just hope they can better differentiate the players from shooting, passing, dribbling, etc. Hopefully defense can be 20x better also. I just want to see good basketball on both ends of the court.

Glad they cleared up the shooting controls and how that works. Sounds good.

I'm really interested to see this game in motion.

I hope this unfolds like I think it's going to... because it's gonna be perfect.

EA needs to start paying me cuz I've been asking for this for some time.

As long as they don't dumb it down and because people can't make shots, it'll be fine.

If you can read this and not get hype then you aren't really grasping it:

I'm a die-hard NBA fan but I've also played every soccer game ever made. There's something very familiar about this new aproach from EA.

The FIFA series used to be seen as a bad joke among hardcore players, which prefered the much more realistic Winning Eleven series (now PES). Just like today's perception around NBA Live and NBA 2K.

But since EA Canada decided that the ball needed to become a free "entity" in FIFA, the game became the beast that it is known for nowadays. Sure, this vision started with FIFA 08, and it only became fully realized this year. And now PES, after resting on its laurels for so long, is the series trying to catch up.

I wouldn't be surprised to see history repeating itself here, although I must admit that NBA 2K11 left me much more hyped up after MJ's news.

Hm....hopefully we won't suffer from the same animation shortage as Live 10. I wonder how the controls will be as far as absolute vs. camera relative. Also, being so analog heavy, how many triggers/modifiers be used (ex. Left Trigger for Euros, Jump stops....R2 for Sprint/Dunking....Whats for dribble moves? Will Size Ups be removed? Step backs? etc.) I hope they can nail this on the first try.

it does seem interesting with the new control scheme, to see it in action and how responsive the controls are will determine if this is the correct direction for this franchise. Overall it was a good article and I will keep my eyes open to see what they have in stored for us in the coming months to see if they add enough to the game to keep it interesting.

This was a great interview. Sounded like real talk to me. I can't understand why Mike Wang didn't like this new direction Live....err...Elite is heading.

I really enjoyed reading that article. It's good to hear that they keep working on giving the user more and more control. User Skill-based shooting is always welcomed. And since I did enjoy Live for several reasons, I am glad they keep building up on that game.

However this year, I am not sure if I will agonize over this year's basketball series until it's actually hitting shelves in october. After all that hype last year I still didn't get satisfied with either game.

So funny, they get one of the arguably best basketball desigers from NBA2K team, EA says revolution, time to contend, and fans say, this is Lives year. Then that guy leaves because he doesn´t like where is is going with the product and that 2K is more into pro basketball. Then now, EA has a namechange and alot of PR spins, and you guys are eating it again?? Wtf..... EA is trying to hype this into sales.... What a joke.

This is the 2nd place I've seen pics of this game. It still looks horrible. Give it up EA.

Interesting.

A new innovative take.
But, it begs the question..Mike Wang left EA because he didnt like the direction it was headed? This seems lik a decent implementation for a hoops game, wonder what he saw that gave him the old red flag?

It seems to me like the player faces have taken a step backwards, especially on that one of Jameer. You can never really tell what it's going to look like on the very first screenshots released, but still...these surprised/disappointed me.

# 57 bigball12 @ 06/03/10 12:38 PM
These graphics look awful! Jameer got worse than this year, and they did nothing to Jennings except add tattoos! I am hoping that these are early stage graphics!

# 58 Pared @ 06/03/10 01:08 PM
The art was not worked on as of the time of these photos.

The game looks much better than this.

# 59 HoosierDaddy @ 06/03/10 01:24 PM
yes, these graphics are not reflective of what we saw during our time there.
