NCAA Football 11 News Post

Check out the new NCAA Football 11 blog, discussing real assignment AI.

Quote:
"The Read Option is one of the most popular, and with the right personnel one of the most lethal plays in college football. The ’05 Longhorns won the National Championship with little more than the Read Option, but we’ve never felt that the play had reached its full potential in the NCAA Football series. With that in mind we went back to the drawing board and completely rebuilt the play from the ground up. First you will notice that we use our new zone blocking matchups. The threat at the point of attack is always priority number 1. So if a safety wants to creep up into the box to try to blitz that guy will get targeted, we want you to get to the outside. Working your way down the line you will notice how covered offensive linemen get help from their uncovered teammate. As for the backside defensive end, he is intentionally left unblocked; that’s your read to make. If you don’t know how a Read Option play works then I’ll break it down for you right now so you can start running for glory as soon as you get the game."

Wow.

If they actually get misdirection plays in the triple option done right too, I'll have to hold back tears of joy in July.

Amen. I'm loving this gameplay stuff, but I'm a dynasty guy. And from the article, it said the next few weeks would be gameplay blogs. They are making it sound like it might be June before we learn about dynasty improvements!

Yep. Better implement that "ss blitz".

Still on the fence, especially after hearing about all this offense. I'd hate to have a repeat of "wide open gameplay" BUT, BUT, I am very excited to hear the blocking is fixed, and that the CPU will finally have a run game.

If we can still play defense, this might be a go

For everyone wondering if the Defense has a chance this year. Here is CDJ's response from the CD. And mods if Im not susposed to post this then you can delete the post.

This is one of the big features I was waiting to finally come out. At the CE, the only person who had really big rushing days was Shopmaster using Alabama, but they have a strong OL and RB stable.

What this really does at its core is eliminate the confusion at the point of attack that existed in the past. That goes for not only for handling a lot of defenders in the box committed to stop the run, but even pass defenses versus the run.

In the games I played, running Dime, 3-3-5, etc. did not shut down the run like it did in 10 (or any previous edition for that matter); it seemed like I was gashed when facing power sets. It took running 4-3, Nickel, 5-2, 4-4 to keep their run game in check.

Who knows what people online will come up with, but I don't think the run game will be overpowering (part of that belief ties into an unannounced feature).

Along with locomotion, it felt like it took smart defensive playcalling (recognizing offensive personnel) and smart/safe strategy to win (ie: don't attempt to hit stick if you are the last line of defense, go for the tackle).

Okay, I surrender. That actually does look really good. If the game plays as smooth as it looks, then I will pick it up this year. I will decide when I play the demo.

I can't believe the amount of out of work game programmers that come to OS to post what should and shouldn't be in a game.

I knew there was a reason I stay away from the general population nowadays... guess it's good to get a reminder once and awhile.

Anyways I'm not a game programmer and this looks really nice. Still see suction blocking but I've come to the conclusion this game engine probably can't be used without suction blocking.

In any case the blocking looks very nice especially for a VIDEO GAME.
I would normally agree.

But this REALLY should have been in the game already. It's fundamental football mechanics...not some brand new revolutionary feature (like I will give credit to NCAA for the great online dynasty mechanic).

Huge improvement. That last run was absolutely beautiful. I'm looking forward.

I'm curious to see what this 'unannounced feature' is for the defense I assume.

THAT was an IMPRESSIVE video. If this is all balanced out and everything can be countered on both sides of the ball properly with personnel and play calling, this game is gonna be nice.

That was the best video coming from EA in a long time.

I'm wondering if this will be the same for the Shotgun Zone Read plays too? Or if the DEs are only programmed to read the ball in the Triple Option?

The Zone Read is a staple play in a lot of forms of the spread, so it's pretty important that they got it right if they really want to have teams play realistically in the game.

Awesome news. What a difference between NCAA10 & 11. 10: Season showdown sponsored by Coke Zero. 11: Locomotion, better blocking AI.

I only played NCAA10 for two weeks b/c the blocking was so atrocious. I even had a few threads closed last year b/c I was posting photographic evidence of the OL stupidity.

If these improvements show up in actual gameplay I will be very, very happy.

In the article there's a whole section about the zone read so I think it is fixed thank god!

Love to see OL chipping up to the next level. Should really redefine the run game. Also in Pass Blocking the Center will now help block like he's supposed to. Very excited about NCAA again.

Looks geat EA. But I hope awareness is accounted for all this nice blocking. I don't want to a guy with low awareness rating to make a great block everytime. I hope they took that into account when doing this. But anyways good job EA.

# 77 MEAST26 @ 05/01/10 04:15 AM
As others have said, hopefully the D will be up to par. But in any case it is great to see this kind of blocking finally in the game.

Side note- loved how it looked when the Texas RB made that small cut to hit the hole.

# 78 Bash @ 05/01/10 06:02 AM
We need this in madden, in madden 10 I drafted the best offensive line in the game in one of the fantasy league and I got stuffed or lost yardage most of the time :/

But this is a quantum leap in terms of blocking AI in a video game. Nobody has done this, not even 2k5. Hell, nobody has even acknowledged the necessity of it before... or their customer's ability to tell the difference.

To me, this is more than a feature... it's a sign of what EA Football is becoming rather than what it's been. It's going to be a few years before it all comes together, It's the first tangible evidence of what I've been trying to say these guys are about now. People tend to not believe me, and that's fine, but I've been in that studio for a lot of hours now, and I've had the chance to speak with a lot of people. They want what we want.

The only problem is, they're charged with the significant task of figuring out how to do it on top of what's already there.
