Madden NFL 11 News Post

IGN has the juice.

Quote:
"Electronic Arts says next Madden title will be different. Significantly.

During a conference call with investors this afternoon, CEO John Riccitiello stated both Dead Space 2 and an "innovative" Madden, presumably Madden NFL 2011, will be available during the company's 2011 fiscal year, which ranges from April 2010 through March 2011.

"Looking at Fiscal 2011, I think we've got a fabulous title plan," Riccitiello stated. "We've got a great new version of Medal of Honor, a revitalized Need for Speed, Sims on console, FIFA in a World Cup year, an innovative and new take on Madden, Dead Space 2, Crysis at full margins, a new MMA game, and many others."

I don't understand the optimism of some. If the new lead director is an arcady developer based on his past works, what makes some think that arcady is not what lies for the future of Madden. Personally, I think Madden 2010 will be the most sim like Madden we will see in a long time. Feel the popularity of the Wii Madden and that look and feel will be what the CEO's will look at and what for a direction due to its popularity and sales.

I hope I am wrong...but man, it so pains me to see this and know that this will be our only option of NFL football, and if its kid friendly with superpower boosts and rainbow color explosion tackles, I am going to puke.

Lets hope that doesn't happen. We are a long way off...but you have to take the mans history into account. Ian, keep your dream alive. You have it heading in the right track. Don't get side tracked by Shiny Prisms and Flair for Sacks. Look at the games you see on Sunday and continue to try to Mimic as best as possible.

Thanks.

Because he isn't the lead director.

I agree with previous posters that EA + Madden + Innovation = a screwed up game. Imo, there are 3 primary play modes to Madden:

  • Offline Franchise-Does not work properly. Stats, AI, CPU logic(in all facets of the game-draft,free agency, trades, etc)....none of it works correctly.
  • Online Franchise-A mere shell of what it should be. Imo, this mode is 50-60% complete at best.
  • Online Play Now-This really depends a lot on server reliability and exploits and is better than it has been but still needs some work.
In short, EA has made improvements but has still yet to put out a complete game where these modes are truly great gameplay experiences. IMHO, if EA finally had these 3 areas working properly that would indeed be true innovation for them.
I agree with you middle part about the modes, but we will need to agree to disagree on the speculation of the CEO innovation and new take= new creative director hire.

And based on Ian's Twitter, looks like I'm right taking a wait and see attitude.

Just my personal assessment...nothing more. If the man is the drive behind arcady style games, I don't think he will be into making a game such as Axis and Allies, wouldn't you say?

agreed, i was thinking to myself what could be the innovation that none of us would see coming and i can't think of anything, besides natal. unless they have completely overhauled the game engine and added in euphoria or something of that nature.

Did you read his whole interview?

He stated he knows their is a difference between sim and arcade and wants to bring new AI and animations to the game play.

It slices both ways, too and I don't understand how people can be pessimistic and tie the CEO's words to the new creative directors hiring.

What really get's lost in everything is that this creative director also made a sim hockey game that people have been talking about, but that get's lost in the NBA JAM and Punch in the Mouth Swat TV or whatever.

Sure, but as you alluded to you think he is the lead director which would be the one making the decisions about the game. That is not true, he is just the creative designer. The lead designer will still be the one who determines the direction of the game, not the creative designer.

This exclusive license deal needs to come to an end. Then EA can do what ever they want with Madden and 2k can go back to making the best NFL game on the market.

Just taking into his past work history. Got to think people are good at the type of field they are working in and have created for before. Just thinking if his foundation is arcady...is creative direction would be the same base. Again, my opinion...if some think that is not founded, well we can all wait and see what direction this goes, can't we. Its like the independent thought alarm went off in here!

Now what does this have anything to do w/ more arcade or Wii Madden 10?
um if you think the Sims remark refers to sports game you are completely wrong. you do know that there is a Sims video game right?? thats the reason why it is capitalized

That is what I'm doing, taking a wait and see attitude. This new creative director also made a sim hockey game, but that one get's overlooked.

His first answer is said, gameplay is king. Does that sound like someone who wants to take Madden and NCAA into kiddy area?

What I saw with this signing is a guy who knows how to make a fun game. I'm up for that.

Guys... this probably just means they are somehow incorporating the "NFL Trainer" game into Madden. Or something like that.

i'm with you man!!!! i wonder if this could possibly mean full integration of either the espn license or maybe even some realistic broadcasts, fox, cbs, nbc, and espn, with some of the actual analysts from games. that would be innovative!!!!

Now, we are thinking out of the box. That would be great.

I am glad you guys are optimistic. Lets hope they continue down the right path.

# 37 Azcardinal32 @ 01/11/10 10:06 PM
My opinion, Madden was seeing sales drop and getting so many complaints on glitches and mistakes that they realized how hard it is to make a game look real, but they have no competition so instead of trying harder to get it done, they are going to make it a different style (probably arcade) so they dont have to defend their failed attempt at a realistic football game, and anything that isnt real in the game they can just say they werent going for realism.

this eliminates ppl from complaining about the fact that the real guy who does the chain gang for the bengals doesnt have a mustache but he does in madden..

# 38 streamline @ 01/11/10 10:08 PM
still not understanding why everyone thinks the game is going to be arcady...ian made it pretty clear that they were going for the "everything you see on sunday will be in madden" approach. i still have faith...i'll keep on drinking that kool aid

We learned from the best. You helped us obtain broadcast view for Madden.

All the reason for me to never sell Madden NFL 10. I don't think Maddenites appreciate this title as being the best sim Madden of all time. If you can't coach or call the correct plays on Madden, you will lose. I think this pushed away a ton of casual football gamers (2k crowd). However, I do welcome a change to make the overall presentation and gameplay elements more fun, but they should blend it with the current sim play mechanics.
