DAY 2

First thing we did was play a FULL game when I arrived today. Russell would choose the Minnesota Twins and I chose the St. Louis Cardinals (No Holliday). After playing him yesterday for 5 innings and only seeing a run between us I knew we were going to be in for another pitcher's duel. Starting Pitcher Brad Penny (Cards) and his opposing pitcher(Slowery? - Not sure if it was him or Baker) would battle it out for 7 innings. In the 4th(thereabouts), Slowery would give up a lone solo HR to Bengie Molina. Molina got ahead in the count and hit a knee high curveball into the LF bleachers. This would be all the Cards would need. The Twins had a couple opportunities in the game but their biggest came in the bottom of the 7th when Span would lead off with a base hit. Mauer would come up and drive one DEEP to LF-CF to the track but it would be hauled in by Rasmus who had to run a long way and Span was caught by a hair as he was almost to third base. Penny was on top of his game with 8 K's. Penny's curveball was hitting the low strike zone early in the game but was falling out of the zone later and Russell wasn't able to lay off. Penny also threw inside fastballs for K's on a few occasions that locked the Twinkies out. The Twins next opportunity to score would be when Penny was taken out of the game. Ryan Franklin would be pulled with a runner on 1st and no outs in the 9th. Motte came in and slammed the door. The Cards other run came on a bases loaded 3-1 pitch by Pat Neshak (I swung too). Neshak was MASTERFUL. I couldn't figure out the submariner who was just plain hard for me to pick up the ball out of his hand. I believe Russell had 10 hits to my 8.

An outstanding game and Russell was a First Class Act taking the loss. I wouldn't have expected it any other way!

OBSERVATIONS:

There is no quick pitching!!! The pitcher cannot hit a button to speed up ONLY the batter!

Saw 2 fans at the same time down the RF line reaching over the wall near the ground trying to scoop foul ball.

PITCHING

The meter looks the same but somehow just feels better. It does seem to penalize you worse the more you miss the meter. But the good part about it is when you do hit the meter you are hitting your spot, near or very near where you wanted the ball to end up. When hitting pause you can observe each pitch and it will tell you near or very near or not.

Fireworks display after hometown HR are only if the team actually does it in real life (i.e. there wouldn't be any for the New York Yankees.

GRAPHICS

Now that I've seen the game again I conclude that they are close in comparison to last year's graphics. I'm used to ONLINE which isn't nearly as good as OFFLINE graphics. However, this isn't a bad thing as far as I'm concerned. It's still more immersive to me this year due to the LIGHTING. It's easier to see the ball too. The animations are so smooth and there are many many new ones. I think the game is drop dead gorgeous.

BROADCAST VIEW

This is for you to decide. You may or may not like it. Your choice. There were a couple times where we should of made plays on balls but for the most part its not too difficult and after some more practice maybe we both would of made those plays.

There were new stat overlays that I hadn't seen before. I really couldn't tell you what any one of them were because for the most part we sped through those. I do recall one about about average mph for both starting pitchers.

AUDIO

The last day of CES wasn't so busy and therefore we could hear it better this time as you'll see in the videos. The crowd is WAY more lively for the home team.

OTHER THINGS

The sign in MIN will be animated when the game is released. I know someone asked that question.

Saw the 3D version of the game and as Rman said it is pretty cool. Have no idea if it will play on current PS3 with firmware.

The video recorder I was using is 720P. Have no idea why the contrast was blooming in these videos. The color therefore isn't as good as my previously posted videos.

Videos ( Keep checking back here as video links will be posted here. Some are lengthy so the videos probably won't show up for at least another 40 minutes)

thanks for all your work DMB....
I think they're as limited as they can be with the way they can animate some things due to the short arms and such in the player models. Do you mean the back-swing, or their little nuance/routine/rhythm step when up at the plate? If you mean the latter, I completely agree with you, and this has plagued them since MLB 2004. If you mean the former, I also agree (the way the hands go up near the neck looks really off due to the short arm length), but thankfully that's normally after contact so we don't see it as often.

I think we'll have to wait until we get the new player models (hopefully next year) to get the best animations for all of these instances.

Blzer, I mean the backswing. Its such a small thing...but to see a guy like Pujols rip a liner and look like that, just takes me out of the realism for a bit.

one plus...did you guys catch the ball off the shin by Navarro? Nice!

The fielding view is amazing! great work.

Jim, how do you know it's not the final build? I don't doubt you at all. I am just curious how you know that.

This isn't the final build. Thats a fact. There were many glitches still in the game along with missing commentary and signature stances, animated MN sign, etc, etc, etc...

Thanks dmbfan...did Russell mention anything about the Braves neon sign? It was flashing when the Mets were batting in one video and in real life it only flashes when the Braves are batting. Was that video just to show that the tomahawk sign is going to flash? I know you and Russell played a few games, but did he have just like random videos on the screen when you were there too like he did on the first video that shows Turner Field?

Sad to say that I'm in the same boat as you. I just don't think it will be as much fun without seeing ball flight and final landing spot.

# 209 silver540i @ 01/11/10 11:55 PM
[quote=EnigmaNemesis;2040637266]Yeah, they just need one set up like the "broadcast view" but shows the flight of the ball and zooms slightly to it as it leaves. Much like you would see in the HR derby.

And a recap after with the arrows and ball placements with the distance like Nemesis mentioned.

Similar to 2K, but with more "effect" and pop than what it has (the stadium nuances in The Show probably will help with it, since it wont cut away from the crowd as fast so you can see them grab the ball).

The 2K HR derby cam is a bit too focused on the ball, but they have an in-game fielding cam that is sweet. Shows plenty of stadium and ball flight. Would be nice if we just had 6-7 choices to make everyone happy.

Hey Jim, not too worked up, but I've seen enough pre-release footage of games to know that more often than not, what you see 1-2 months previous to release (feature-wise) is probably what you'll get. Now, if it was a framerate issue, or for example, the audio not being in yet, then of course I keep the faith that it will be in the final build.

What can I say Jim, I get a lot of entertainment from The Show and I just want it to be as good as it can be. That said, the lack of really good ball flight CAM, especially for HR derby, is a let down for that feature.

I think most of the work at this point is probably getting in final touches as well as bug-fixing. However at the same time, I think the build at CES is older than, say, January 7th, so there was a time in between that build and right now that they put more things in, including animations and the like. They're probably not yet at that stage, but at least close to it.

So I hope that none of my posts sounded like "It's too late for this year so I'm going to complain," because instead my posts were like "Hopefully there's still some time that I can make some suggestions for them to tweak for this year's version."

It was a guess, that's all. I didn't say that's the stage that they're on, I'm saying that's part of what they have left to do lol. Believe me, I'm more jealous than anyone else here that you got to go to the community event, so at least you get to show off what you know. I'm just left here to guess.

The "complaints" are suggestions in case they missed anything, like the Target Field animation.

Hell yeah they are still working on...changing and probably adding things to the game WAY into January.
Last year...I believe we went to SCEA in very late January.
They changed a couple of things right then and there.
Some they could...some they couldn't.

(in my best Jim Mora voice)
HR DERBY?...HR DERBY!?....are you kidding me HR DERBY!!!?
doesn't even belong...
(of course I'm mocking...but HR DERBY?!)

That's why we need more generic stances to choose from, and I mean dozens more.

Exactly, crunch time is coming up for these guys. 18 hour days and sleeping under your desk. Especially with a game that has a deadline like sports games, you won't ever see a final build until it's released to be pressed. I'd be surprised if the build they had at CES was anything close to a final. More like something as bug free as possible that shows the new features to the public.

Only reason I figured animations wouldn't take up much space is because... well... they tend to add hundreds of animations a year. I know that audio files (commentary) takes up a lot, but it sounds to me like animations wouldn't take up much.

Only reason I see it might is if the animations we have to select take up more space, maybe because they need to be called or something, I don't know.

I'm just saying that, if push comes to shove and if we can't have both, I would almost want to see a baseball game one day had hundreds of "generic" stances instead of signature stances, because then rookies won't always have the same few stances or whatever, and we can still find close enough stances for everyone else.

Scott, I personally am not gonna get into it with you about stances.. We beat that horse dead(???????) back in January of last year.

My new aim is for custom rosters online(exhibitions) and in leagues. Bring it home Sony, give me the full package of online play. Let me play as the '54 Dodgers in Ebbets online!
