NBA Live 10 News Post

Lead Gameplay Designer, Mike Wang, has just posted another NBA Live 10 blog. This one featuring dribble moves.

Quote:
"Today we’re going to talk a bit about the Dribble Moves in NBA Live 10. As you saw in Jeff’s blog, we spent a lot of time working on the ball handler’s movement this year. So as you move around the court and make hard changes of direction, your player will pull off contextual crossovers and planted turns based on which hand he’s dribbling with and where he’s trying to go. But everyone loves to pull off ankle breaking crossovers and spin moves so we had to beef up what was formerly known as “Quickstrike Ballhandling.”

So let’s start by talking about size up moves. Whenever we’re in mocap and we ask the talent to go 1-on-1, the first thing these guys always do is pull off a series of stationary dribble moves before starting their drive. These moves, or size ups as we call them, are the first step in creating space for yourself as a dribbler and getting your defender off balance."

Yeah, I'll have to admit the force field issue with Ray and Tyrus in that video is annoying. Should've been a collision or something.

Yeah 2k9 has this.....the thing with 2ks's size up moves is it makes your defender move in an uncompromising way and gives the offensive player space just about everytime, I kill with Brandon Roy because of their animations. As long as in Live 10 I have control over my defender and he doesnt get sucked into a canned animation because someone is doing a size-up move then I'm cool. I should be able to have complete control of my defender.

Please don't tell me my point is moot.
"charge up" was a bad word choice.

It's more of a setup move into a go move. If you're worried about the defender being helpless, don't. Look at the other video of Drose ripping Rondo. Plus, as a manual defender you have a few choices --- gap him while he's doing a size up, get up close and gamble for a steal risking him blowing by you, get up close and play solid d by moving your stick in whatever way he moves.

As for Ray vs. Thomas -- If you call that a "forcefield," sure -- we do have plenty of contact at the basket animations though.
Oh, watched it again, you're right about the ball hitting the back rim. Nice blog, hope to see more contact animations soon.

Yeah I saw that too, I guess it's still on easy level or they disable collisions right Marcus?

Not a big fan of the ball physics. Rose's shot looked extremely flat like a lot of the shots in Live 09. Love the dribble moves though.

Just think about it man... You're sitting there dribbling back and forth, between your legs, whatever.. the defender (especially a human, and ostensibly an AI-controlled player) isn't sure where you're going to go. If they happen to guess right or simply give you a ton of space to stop the drive, they can defend you well... but all the size-up moves make it tough to know which way you're driving.

That's the advantage of using size-up moves as opposed to just standing there stationary and then driving to the hoop, using an RS move, etc. I don't think it's anything more than that. And then to counter the effectiveness, the defender has an easier time ripping the ball the longer the ball-handler sits there playing with it.

I'm really not worried about the mechanic, especially on higher difficulty levels. I'm sure this was on Rookie/Pro again to capture the dribble moves for the video.

Ray, I think a lot of the effectiveness in these sizeup moves depends on the player using them and the defender. If Kobe is guarded by Quentin Richardson, he'll be at an advantage and abuse him quite often. Not saying it will happen EVERY time because then there's a problem. 75% of the time, Kobe will get to his spot and score. When he's guarded by someone like Bowen or a well-known defender - there's more of a chance of stopping it or containing it. This gives the user much more control of the game and the ability to play 1-on-1 ISOs which happens quite often with superstar players. I love the feature and can't wait to use it.

Those superstars can do those things and get by defenders better than others. Drose lebron kobe and wade they can beat almost anybody from an iso set. Thats probably why theyve only showed them doing it not everyone can do those moves to get by defenders so im sure not every point guard in the game is gunna kill you like in 09.

Anyways i have a question, i see the size ups but where are the quickstrikes accuring? Is it when drose starts to move forward and does a step back move? What moves are we able to do with the quickstrikes i just keep seeing the sizeups?

After watching more, I really like the fluidity of D-Roses dribble moves in the first video. There is almost no hitch in between moves and they all seem to compliment eachother. Definitely the best I've seen in any basketball game.

Good Work EA

Hey, whens the net physics blog? I can't deal with another year of stiff *** nets. Kills the immersion on a game thats looking pretty damn good in that department.

Each player has their own shot arc.

If you allow a dribbler to get that bounce and rhythm your allowing him to get comfortable as he "sizes you up" which means ur more than likely to get beat. That's why you either gap or you get into a guy so he can't get his rhythm. You never just stand there flat footed. That's how dudes get shook!

as long as i cant do that stuff with Jason Richardson or someone else with suspect handles that usually gets love in video games then im happy... i dont want to be playing people online and they are taking Danny Granger/Rudy Gay/J Rich/Barbosa and doing this to me all game.

Can somebody answer my question above

Gee-whiz, the haters that complain about every little thing Live 10 related and RayAP19 seems to being goin' hard, at this, like Brooklyn, or sumthin'. This is good stuff going on where EA is actually trying to make a HUGE leap in gameplay with the game and it looks like they've pretty much succeded by the looks of things, yet, whiners and trolls are abound. I understand constructive criticism but people that moan about every little thing is ridiculous.
