NCAA Football 10 News Post

Check out the latest NCAA Football 10 blog. This one covers player lock and defensive assist.

"Is it Thursday already? It has been a very busy last couple months here at Tiburon; all of us on the NCAA Football 10 team have been working extremely hard put the finishing touches on this year’s game. Every day brings us closer to putting NCAA Football 10 into everyone’s hands and we couldn’t be more excited.

Last week we released two game play improvements for NCAA Football 10. The first one showed off the Pass Blocking Pocket; and the second was about the new Player Pursuit Angles. Today we are going to reveal another two features brand new to the game: Player Lock and Defensive Assist.

While playing defense in Dynasty or Play Now are you the type of person who likes to just take the DE and try and make a play? What about only choosing the FS? Or have you wanted to be the WR on a big third down because you think you can run his route better?

How would you like to be able to do this?"

I'd been suggesting the ability to play from the perspective of any player on the field for Madden for a while and it looks like we've got it for NCAA. I hope this makes it into Madden, too.

The one thing the blog didn't tell me though, is whether or not the camera will come to a closeup when the player is about to make the play or the ball carrier you're coming towards is in your direct line of sight. The photos would at least suggest that but I can't know for sure.

If you could tell us about that, Russell, it would be cool.

While I think you've made your point you do not like that way of doing it, personally I think it is better that I am not forced into a menu every single time I want to turn Player Lock on/off, also I can change my mind and be a DE one play and a CB the next... agian without going to a menu.

So while I don't think you are wrong, it is a valid opinion; this was our choice to go with this method for Player Lock.
Don't see why there couldn't have been a menu option for this... i.e.

Player Lock Type: OFF | PER PLAY | ENTIRE GAME

If the user picked ENTIRE GAME, the first position locked would be the one that stuck for the entire game. If they wanted to change, they would have to go back to then menu and select PER PLAY and pick a new position the next play then go back to the menu and select ENTIRE GAME again.

PER PLAY would work the way it works now.

OFF the feature would be disabled.

when u pick a player like lets say a Safty, the next play u still have that player, so if all u have to do pre snap is press one button to get the player lock i dont believe its halfed ***.

You don't have to switch back to that player each play, it stays on him the entire game if you want. All you have to do is click the stick to lock it.

Haha, I LOVE how overreactive people get.
People need something to complain about i guess.

Agreed. As usual, a mole hill is becoming a mountain. It's not a big deal.

Most of the balls that get swatted like that in real life are horrible underthrows that the DB has time to measure up and wap away....and the reciever has to try to slow down and get to the ball, but his defender is able to get their first.

BUT THE DIFFERENCE IS...

In real life, Quarterbacks can also OVERTHROW their recievers...or lead them and prevent that situation.

So, i guess what i mean to say is there are WAY too many under throws that make that animation show up on almost every deep ball.

So they either need to extend the throw more relative to the reciever...or make the ball obey the laws of gravity and not just float all over the field.

I think EA Misunderstands what a "Lob" pass really is....you aren't actually just throwing it up for grabs 233 feet in the air...it's a solid throw with a trajectory that gives YOUR receiver the best opportunity to catch it at it's highest point....yet time the ballflight in a real-life highlight of a fade pass...Then compare that with some RC'ing in Ncaa...there's no comparison
This blog explains the new passing system. Some of it doesn't apply to NCAA, but the ball physics and landing zone do.

In NCAA 09:

I pick a safety. The next play I still have that player. During the play I don't press the Player Switch button.

Explain the difference to me please. Even Russ admitted that is the same process, but with a button press each play.

Go play any other sports game and see how Player Lock is done. That's how the feature was in every EA sports game in the past and that's generally what is expected. The benefit of Player Lock is so you don't ever have to worry about pressing buttons or accidentally switching during the game.

If some of you simply don't understand Player Lock as a feature, go pick up a game that has it.

Maybe its you that dont understand? this feature isnt like other player lock features because it isnt just so you dont accidentally switch your player, its sole purpose is to give you that certain players veiw on the play/formation.

With this feature you can attack the passing game alot better and be much better at run support by hitting open gaps because you have a much better view of the play. player lock is just about accidentally switching mid play, i like that each play u have the option of turning it on because to use this feature every play doesnt seem like it would help you i think its better to use it in certain situations punt/feild goal block, 3rd and 2 or less and critical 4th down and redzone plays.

We just differ on what Player Lock means. It's been a completely different way to play the game in the past and now it is an in-game feature that really boils down to a camera angle change.

I doubt anyone who didn't use this mode in the past will suddenly decide to use Player Lock in a key game situation or for a random 10-20 plays per game, but let's see how it turns out. I'd be interested to see 2-3 months after release who is still using Player Lock and for what reasons.

Player lock is frickin awesome. I've been wanting this feature ever since I started playing NCAA. Sweet.

More fluff from NCAA. How can there be such a different philosophy between Madden and NCAA?

Great idea man, EA should adopt this. I'll eat my shorts if they do.

Player lock is really just a fancy name for a camera angle change. That's all they added to the game to make this 'feature' - that, and taking the ability to switch players away for that play. In 09 you could control just one player all game if you wanted, but just without the camera angle change.

Yes, you are 100% right. It's not player lock. Player lock is picking a player and then you're locked onto that player for the game. This is not player lock no matter how much EA tries to pretend it is. Shame on them for misleading the public too I might add.

This feature is a great add. it was long over due.

I disagree that this is fluff. I've been bitter about some of the news on NCAA '10 but the player lock is a great feature. It is just a camera angle change but I think that will add a totally new experience when playing defense. I'm really looking forward to this since I usually play as a LB and I think this could be great.

Totally agree! I've been wanting this for a while now and am VERY happy it's in. I always play as one player on D and never switch during the play. It's way to easy to get user picks (Especially out paterns) by doing that and accelerating to the ball since the CPU AI WR would never accelerate to the ball. Also it makes me fell more into the game when I'm only one player.
However the one thing I hated was having to play D from the O perspective. Now that's changed and I'm all over this!
Great addition IMO.

I agree. i don't see it as fluff at all. Should help improve my play on D.
