Madden 2010 News Post

WOW! What a way to end a half!!!!

Well Madden (and NFL) fans, as promised, we’re bringing you a sneak peek at Madden NFL 10 by releasing a feature that you’ll see in this year’s game! Remember, it’s only a mere 6½ months away!

We have a big goal as a team this year - to relay out as much information as possible. Hopefully in the process we can make the development of this game extremely transparent so you all, the fans, can get an inside look at how the game gets made. In doing so, we’ll often be discussing new features with you as they are finalized and polished, meaning that each and every one of you out there can give suggestions directly to us to try and shape the game towards your preferred direction. Madden NFL as a Franchise has one overarching goal it has to reach every year, and that is to be the best sports game in history. I’m going to leave the discussion to you all on whether we’ve reached that goal in year’s past, but I do know that now we all get to be a part of making it happen this year. You are no longer posting to forums in vain!

So as we sat down as a team and tried to decide what information we wanted to release first, it really made the most sense to focus more on the technical details for the first part of the year. This is for a couple of reasons – one, the majority of the people looking into Madden info right now are most likely going to be the more hardcore fans (who appreciate the details), and two, we obviously want to save more of the big name feature stuff for later in the year closer to launch time. You should see this theme continue throughout the first few months of our updates. Another reason we really like this approach is that some updates (this post included) are purely about new technology that actually hasn’t been fully fleshed out in the game yet. So the hope is that we can take feedback from the community in regards to maybe new ideas they’d like to see us implement with the new technology. This is one of the most exciting aspects for us as a team in regards to our interaction with the community throughout the development cycle for Madden NFL 10.

Enough talk – on to the new stuff!

Let me tell you a story of playing Madden NFL.
It’s 3rd and 10, and I’m down 14-7 against my buddy over Xbox LIVE. He’s a pretty conservative player, so I know he’ll sit his safeties back a bit and stay with man coverage on my outside receivers. I’m going to try and send my slot WR on a deep fly to clear the safety out, and hit my #1 WR on a Deep In. I saw Kurt Warner and the Rams with their "greatest show on turf" make this look easy week after week in the late 90’s! So I take the snap and analyze the situation quickly – no blitz, and the safeties are dropping out…money. I wish I was better at going through progressions, but I’m not - I’m pretty much watching my #1 WR all the way. He’s just coming out of his break on the deep in, and he’s got at least 2 steps on the defender trailing him in man coverage. I fire it in there, a perfect bullet pass where I think only he can catch it. Right before the ball gets to him the DB turns around and in one quick motion steps in front, picks it off, and is headed back the other way. HUH? THE DB NEVER EVEN SAW THE BALL!!

Ever happened to you? Did your controller survive to tell the tale?

It is my pleasure to introduce Madden’s newest piece of technology, one that is also shared within many of the EA SPORTS games, called "Procedural Awareness". What is it? We’ll you’ve likely heard of “head tracking” with IK. If you haven’t, it’s a way to turn the players head around to face a target dynamically, without the need for canned animations. Well, think of Procedural Awareness (PA for short) as the “next-gen” version of head tracking. Since it is so early in the year, unfortunately I can’t show you any videos of it running in the game, but I can show some “tech demos” of sorts:

This is definitely pretty cool stuff…we can tune how fast the player switches between different targets, and then also how he behaves when he locks on and follows a target. You can already envision this being used by DB’s and WR’s when the ball is thrown, QB’s as they go through progressions, safeties as they drop in zone, and obviously many more cases. In terms of visual fidelity, PA is also a major step up from any other normal IK head tracking solution. We’re in the middle of some changes so I would rather not show you our player model’s face in the tool (his jaw is missing…it isn’t pretty ), but I can show a video of PA running in the tool with an NBA Live player model – Dwayne Wade. This shows off how the eyes track along with the head, the ability to dynamically “blink”, some really smooth blending between different targets, and even how the spine and shoulders can be “pulled” to follow the eyes/head as well:

There’s one last cool feature within PA, and that is a concept of “procedural attitudes”. An attitude is basically a collection of a bunch of different variables that alter the way a player “looks” while he is head tracking. So for the above videos, you basically saw just one attitude – “alert”. But PA allows you to not only just tweak how quickly he reacts and the amount of time it takes him to switch targets and such, but you can also toy with a big collection of variables for players to actually express emotion with their head and eye movement. A big problem in many sports games is making characters feel “alive” – and it applies to Madden often times as soon as the play is over. You don’t want to see a bunch of zombies walking around, but you also don’t want to spend months writing code and adding animations to make players act a little more lifelike (especially when there are so many features we need to attack to more realistically emulate football gameplay). Here’s where PA helps tremendously…it allows artists to create subtle emotional attitudes for players without the need of an engineer. Again there is ZERO canned animation at work here…it’s all totally dynamic and can be created by an animator adjusting a few sliders in the tool. Below is an example video of a few attitudes:

Alright, so what’s Procedural Awareness in a nutshell?
“The ability to procedurally manipulate the spine, neck, head, and eyes on a player in the game; and also add layers of emotion/attitudes on top of those manipulations”.

So the videos really just showcase the technology…not how we implement that technology in our game to actually change the way the game is played. My story above about getting picked off by a DB that can’t see the ball? Well now we can make a DB track the ball realistically and we’ll make sure that he has a true line of sight before he can make a play on the ball. And if/when he gets burned, he can dynamically look down and shake his head with zero new animations or engineering support.

A very exciting thing for our team while posting this is that we are not using PA’s full functionality in the game right now. We have the standard “alert” attitude hooked up for 1) DB’s and WR’s to track the ball, 2) defenders to track the ballcarrier, and 3) the ballcarrier to track threats. So I'm passing it off to you guys:

- Where else would you like to see PA active?
- Are there any new attitudes would you like to see?
- Do you have any suggestions on the best area you think we should actually use the attitudes that we’ve created?

We will follow up in a few months (once we’re actually showing videos of the game) and show what all we changed/added thanks to community feedback. I personally can’t wait!

Enjoy the rest of the Super Bowl!

I'd prefer they focus on getting OL/DL interaction, WR/DB interaction, and defensive pursuit angles better before they start worrying about a QBs foot getting stepped on. The first list of things happen throughout every game. The second, unless you're Kurt Warner, might happen 3-4 times during the year.

I concur, they really have to get the overall interactions of the game up a notch.

Is Tom Hammond making a return? If yes, have him down a 12 pack of beer before recording him. He was one of the most unnatural sounding announcers ever in a sports game.

You guys have a much more discerning eye than I do. I simply don't pay attention to this level of detail.

For me the lack of a functional Franchise mode makes this a repetitive game, lacking in fun. They can fix things like the QB Drop back and the throw, and they can add this head tracking thing, too, but it's all immaterial if the game doesn't provide a fun and immersive experience. For me, that starts with a working Franchise mode.

Before you (EA) put any new features in Madden 10, please, please make sure each feature works the way it is suppose to play out. Test one feature at a time and make sure it works, then start on the next.

I dont want to take anything away from your efforts, but I sure hope EA does a heck of a lot more then this to improve there game. What it needs is better models, animations(head turning is in there), and control. Also needs presentation that is much better then last years attempt!

Not to be negative, but Ive blown $50 on your game since 05. None of them have been good enough for me to enjoy. man, I really just want a good game for a change. Im hopeful, but yet with past history I wont be buying the game until Ive rented it.
No point blowing money on a rental either. Just play the demo when it comes out bro.

Also,

1. A more meaningful Super Bowl celebration would be nice.
2. Madden 2001 had real NFL records that your players could break. That's the sort of immersion I'm talking about. I want to track career stats and be able to break NFL Records. And a Hall of Fame. I want my players to make it to the HoF.

id like to see bad snaps on fgs, punts, under center, and shotgun would be nice.

Definitely second the bad snaps idea!

I'm very excited for the new version to be released. How much of an upgrade should we expect in the PC version of coach mode using franchise for head to head play. Any chance of us having broadcasts as part of the game so that we can scout opponents and watch games for entertainment?

Ian,
Ok great now you can make the DB's look at the ball (wow!)

Now tell me other then the "VISUAL" aspect of the game... this doesn't improve the gameplay!
I guess now (in the story you posted) the only difference will be that the DB is looking at the ball.

You see what I would expect would make this feature more realistic (as far as gameplay) would be if you said

" ... not only will the DB now track the ball, but that pick will now have some variables to determine if the catch/pick is EVEN made!"

i.e:
When a player's head is not aligned with his body it will now depend on the player's athleticism whether or not he will be able to stay with the WR or receiver.
VERY rarely will somebody MAINTAIN the speed while tracking a ball. OTHERWISE everybody in the NFL would cover people while looking back at the line of scrimmage.

as an affect/result of the tracking feature this should make the DB either:

1. slow down to focus on the ball and risk being burnt

or

2. stay with the player risking being able to make a play on the ball at the perfect time

This is what makes great DB's like Champ, Deion etc etc so effective they made good decisions based on their matchups!

So Ian and staff you should understand just adding tracking features isn't the only answer. But understand the variables that will be a result of the tracking feature need consideration too!

Cause we all know about the DB's "Slide/warp pick"!

since they have attitudes why not give players their own personal attitudes. For example T.O blowing up on the sidelines or on the field because hes not happy about not getting the ball, T.O would act like himself. extra curricular stuff going on like shoving punching and having teammates stand up for each other. intimidating defensive players should have a intimidating look on there face and do something after making a play to intimidate offensive players.

Are you ever going to bring the vision cone back? I loved this feature when it came out, and was very upset when EA took it out.

# 275 gatorfan @ 02/20/09 01:28 AM
they should add towels for QB and hand warmer.

real helmets in the pro bowl

a gatorade shower after a big game

NCAA 10 should add the senior bowl. it will make a much better game.

# 276 gatorfan @ 02/22/09 06:22 PM

The QB should look to the sideline like this.

Well, there is one out of a million things that yal will appear to fix. I do not know how many times my Madden buddy and I have went back to the replays of plays like the one you described and just shut the game off due to this problem. If I may, I would love to throw out a few more suggestions for the team to mull over this off-season. The past three Madden games have disappointed me to the extent to where I will actually have to DECIDE whether I should buy this years copy. The last time I spent my money well on a Madden game was 2004. Anyway, here is my list:

1. Controls
Ah! How I love taking a walk down memory lane, flipping on my old gamecube, and playing one of the old generation versions of Madden, such as, Madden 2004. The controls were so smooth! So crisp! When your player switched direction, it would slow him down. When you spun or jukes, it would actually fake out players from time to time.
All I have seen from X-Box 360's past couple versions are player that just switch direction so stiffly, and worse... It doesn't hamper their speed. Not to mention how the moment you change direction, everybody on the defense counters your move in simulaneous fashion. There is no, "Holy crap! He's running the other way now," reaction by defenders.
The buttons can be quite unnerving as well. Back on gamecube, I would press Y to intercept the ball and my player would make his animation at the same delay each and everytime. On 360, I go for a pick and sometimes the animation is instant and other times it takes a good second to process.
Finally, a skilled Madden player should not require the help of automatic jukes or jumps to help them out. One to many times my runningback has been forced to run AWAY from the whole because the game made me automatically juke. What the heck? If I want to juke, I'll press the juke button.

2. Finding a Happy Medium on Pass Rushing
In 2008, it was too Godly. In 2009, getting to the quarterback once is a huge accomplishment. I swear, every computer controlled quarterback I play looks like Tom Brady right now. They know exactly where to go with the ball the moment the ball is snapped without hesitation. The perfect read, EVERYTIME! It is beyond annoying to have to face Tom Brady each and every week. Sometimes, his name is Billy Volek or Tavaris Jackson, but I know the truth... They are ALL Tom Brady.

3. Ratings
I read one of your latest blogs about the ratings and it appears you are fixing everything I was intending to rant on. As long as you can guarantee me that there will be a noticable difference between Marion Barber and Shaun Alexander next year, I think I will be able to maintain my cool. Not only that, but I would also like to see substancial player progression based on performance in Franchise mode. It is just ridiculous how little players improve in 2009! When Adrian Peterson had his breakout year, you changed his rating from an 85 to a 95 from Madden 08 to Madden 09. I would like to see that kind of reward for a season like that by any of my players.

4. Training Drills
Half of the training drills are dull and exhausting. Yes, I understand you want to add a sense of realism to the game, but that is all cancelled out by the fact that bench press improves a kickers kicking power. Get back to basic training drills like the one you had in 2004. Those were fun! Ask any player... When they play Madden, do they really want a practice to feel like a practice? Of course not. Almost every player out there hates practice, but loves to play the game. Look at Favre. He's a perfect example.

5. Scouting Reports and Drafting
In 2004, a 4.32 40 time meant your player would have 97 speed. 35 bench reps meant your player would have about 95 strength. Why do I mention this? I have drafted one too many players in the later generation Madden with 4.32 40's and 35 reps that have generated stats that really do not match up to their scouting reports. I almost feel like I wasted a draft pick half the time!
In 2004, I found a 5th round draft projection at quarterback which I drafted do to his 4.32 40. Over the course of four seasons, I molded him into a 95 overall quarterback with 99 throwing power (started at 77) and 92 throwing accuracy (started at 72). This is what we call a "steal." I miss being able to pick out a guy with a 4.32 40 and that is all he had and then take the time to mold him into a decent if not great player based on how I used him. There are no more steals in Madden anymore. If you draft a 5th player now, you are going to get something far beyond to awful to even donate time into. Not only that, his scouting report probably will lie to you as well. He may have a 4.32 40 and then come out with 89 speed. Well... I guess I should have drafted the guy ahead of him because that guy was projected higher. Damn! Where would Romo be right now if he were given the rating Madden would give to an undrafted rookie free agent?

6. Receiving
Why is pass defense so extraordinary in Madden? Hmm... Hmm... Okay, now that you've had time to think about it, take a look at the replay of the interception you just threw in which your receiver was in FRONT of the defender. The defenders actually ATTACK the ball. The receiver just keeps running his route like the ball should magically fall in his hands. Either receivers need to have more of a defensive back mentality or defensive backs need to be more passive like the receivers. Either they both attack the ball or neither really attacks the ball and if it just happens to come there way, they'll try to hit it or catch it.
By improving the receivers' AI to where they will have a more aggressive mindset when the ball is in the air will do two things: 1. It will help give the offense a more realistic feel when the pressured quarterback tosses a prayer to his main receiver out of desperation and 2. Reduce the insane amount of interceptions that defensive backs get year in and year out. My friend had two cornerbacks on the same team with 15 interceptions a piece at the end of one franchise regular season. That means both defenders just broke the NFL single season record for interceptions by a single player. That is unrealistic and insane! PLEASE!!! Allow the receivers to fight for the ball!

In conclusion, if you can fix at least two of these things this year, I would be willing to buy Madden 10. This is just a small list that I have which contains many, many problems I had with Madden 2009. Anyway, best of luck and I really enjoy what I am hearing thus far.

Practice Squads - We need them! Allows your young player to retain their playbook knowledge. Which would be easier to add a player then signing a street free agent.
-------------
During Time Outs - Have the QB stroll over to the sidelines to talk with the coach.
--------------
When Starting QB is injured on the field and the training staff is attending to him. Show the back-up getting his helmet on and then getting loose on the sidelines

Seeing the Back-up warm up also when the starter has been pulled do to poor play or blow out situations.
Just have the change in depth chart or 2nd string mass sub activate this.
--------------
At the start of the game. Show the Top players warming up before the game. Pop there season stats up while they are being shown and talked about.
---------------
Moderate increases in the salary cap!
---------------
Have players signing bonus accelerate on to the cap when they retire.
---------------
More Draft presentation. The Real NFL teams watch the coverage from the War Room.
----------------
During the Draft. When a team trades there pick and another team slides into that spot. DON'T restart the clock.
----------------
From NFL Head Coach. More time to negotiate a contract. Sometimes we have to clear some cap space etc. etc.
----------------
Agents! They need to be in the game.
----------------
Scouting Staff! One -Player Personnel Guy. Then have 3-5 scouts! Each scout is different and has there own opinion on players.
The info gathered is different from other teams.
----------------

I'll add more as I go..............

Still playing H.C. 09!

I don't know, I was wondering the same thing. I guess they can't find it on the front page of the forum.
