MLB 2K8 News Post

Matt Blumenthal had an opportunity to demo Major League Baseball 2K8 this afternoon. His official writeup of the event will be up later this week, but we wanted to get some quick thoughts up here for you guys.
  • This game looks beautiful, the player models have improved but the real leap is in the animations. The animations move silky smooth and there is no need to worry about herky jerky animations of the past anymore.
  • I'm impressed with how intuitive and fresh the analog controls are. The pitching takes a little time to get the hang of but the new mechanics add a whole new dimension to the pitching model.
  • The baseball cards feature is surprisingly cool, expect me to have more on that later on this week.
  • In-game saves are officially in the game this year.
  • Check swings don't seem to be a chore anymore. They are now accomplished by pulling back on the right analog stick - no more right trigger necessary.
  • Stadium-specific animations are in. The Yankee Roll Call was mentioned specifically.
  • There should be plenty of foul balls this year. I saw several in the few at-bats I played.
  • No spring training games this year.
  • I counted eight unlockable classic stadiums. I think more might be available by default as well.
  • No co-op play
  • You will have the option to make trades for CPU-controlled teams in franchise mode, but you won't be able to edit their rotations and lineups.
  • It was suggested to me that the demo is done and has been submitted. If that's the case, it's in Microsoft's hands now.
  • I will hit on a few of the big questions from the forum here.

You on the ps3 or 360?
Did you put the whole song or did you cut it?
Thanks for the impressions, one of the features I'm looking forward too.

What about stadium sounds?

Ok let me start by saying I have not looked at every single post in this thread. With that said I must say this game is average at best. This game is not finished. Straight up and down this game just isnt finsihed. Online play is garbage(no sliders?). The game plays a decent game of baseball but its hit or miss anyway you look at it.

Now I understand some enjoy that the game and thats fine but if you are having any doubts about it. Go rent the game first because $60 is a lot for a game you might not like and will only end up with $20 trade in credit for.

Whoever said this game needed to be worked on for another 6 months before being released is right. The game just isnt finished and I for one feel betrayed with all the crap Ben fed us.

Here is one person hoping EA buys Take 2 because if im only going to have 1 baseball choice on the 360 then I like my chances with 2k/EA teaming up vs just 2k and thier crappy engine to play my baseball on.

Oh and please dont tell me to go play the show. I dont have a ps3 and that statement is getting old guys.

Even with the warts this game has, I can't put it down and I want to play more and more.

I think that the PS3 accidentally got burned from the Wii version. This game hurts to look at... It's beyond atrocious.

That's all I have to say. I really feel for anyone that purchased this as a new game.

Good luck!
I did, sadly enough. Luckily the guys at my local Gamestop were really cool and let me trade it for the 360 version. The difference is really night and day. If you think the 360 has framerate problems, you should try the PS3. It was basically unplayable for me. The 360 version is better, but not nearly 60 fps like we were led to believe. What I don't understand is how they could have dropped the texture quality and gotten a worse framerate at some points. It makes no sense to me. And I can't turn off the damn bottom ticker and it's really starting to annoy me. Has anyone been able to get it stop popping up?

Pause the game and go into your VIP settings. There should be an option in there.

Excactly!!! This whole 3 year plan thing is crap. It's a tired excuse that im sick and tired of hearing. Even if you are in year 2 do not put out a game that is not 100% finished. I just feel bad for the average gamer out there. They must be hating themselves for buying this game.

Well I went out to get this game on PS3 & IMO its pretty good. The framerate that people have been talking about is not as bad on my TV, I can see it on some cutscenes, very obvious at times but very minimal on the field. Just out of curiousty I switched to 720p but it ran the same for me. I rock a 40" Samsung HDTV.

Anyways, the game has really good hit variety. Pitching is alot of fun & it feels really rewarding when you strike someone out. I still have to get a hang of hitting as I'm not that good at it yet. :P I threw a decent amount of meatballs at first but none left the yard, actually alot went out of the strike zone which makes me happy.

Atmosphere is pretty good so far, people cheer at the right time most of the time which is good.

This my impression after 2 games. Hopefully it continues to be fun.

Just played another game.

I helped mitigate some of my framerate issues by turning off Ball Trail (Which I hate anyway) and switching to Ariel View. I have really started to love that view on the defensive end. Really get a good feel for the ballpark, espcially on flyballs to the outfield. Framerate still lags at times, but it's managable at this point.

Really starting to dig all the analog controls. Just a lot of fun. Hitting is really rewarding when you turn on an inside fastball down the line. No complaints there.

Game is really fun. I don't think it's from a pure baseball simulation standpoint it's on par with The Show, but the game is fun.

The more I play the more I have fun with it. Again, don't see it being my primary baseball game, although you never know, but it is a good game, and I am having more fun with it, the more I start to grasp the nuances of the controls.

Imagine that.........

Thanks for the insight. We really need 2 separate threads for these games as nearly every game anymore plays better/differently on one system than the other.

I bought it used because you have 7 days to return it for full credit if you don't like it.

Got the game this morning...(Xbox360)
Not gonna make a long post but here are the things I would have liked to know before getting the game :

Framerate: Not a problem for me, does'nt change the gameplay
Graphics : Maybe a little stepdown from 2k7...but not enough to let it bother me
Pitching : I like the new system, learning curve of about 20 minutes
Hitting : Much better then 2k7, way more hit variety
Fielding : Huge improvement
Aerial cam: Reminds me of the way I used to play High Heat, good job there
Is it better then 2k7 : Yes it is
Is it better then The Show : Don't know, don't care

What's REALLY sad is when folks come back to reality and realize There won't be a patch for the framerate. I don't think there's EVER been a 360 or PS3 game that had it's framerate fixed via patch...that i can recall. i challenge anybody that can name a game that was.

The framerate is a HUGE issue to me. i 1st experienced this BS w/ The Show 07 for PS2...everytime you hit the ball there was a framerate drop i'm still prolly gonna give it shot & see whats up...i guess

I tried playing the game without the HDD and it is indeed smooth! I then created a profile on my memory card and loaded the game up, setup everything the way a like it and had the game save my VIP to my memory card. Well... the frame rate problem returned. I think there may be a problem with the VIP system in the game. I know it tracks and saves quite a few stats in the game. Perhaps this is affecting the frame rate? I know with no profile the game is smooth. With a profile, it's very choppy. If this is indeed the problem, it sounds like a patch could easily fix this. I think the game is pretty good. But it could be better.
