MLB 2K8 News Post

Matt Blumenthal had an opportunity to demo Major League Baseball 2K8 this afternoon. His official writeup of the event will be up later this week, but we wanted to get some quick thoughts up here for you guys.
  • This game looks beautiful, the player models have improved but the real leap is in the animations. The animations move silky smooth and there is no need to worry about herky jerky animations of the past anymore.
  • I'm impressed with how intuitive and fresh the analog controls are. The pitching takes a little time to get the hang of but the new mechanics add a whole new dimension to the pitching model.
  • The baseball cards feature is surprisingly cool, expect me to have more on that later on this week.
  • In-game saves are officially in the game this year.
  • Check swings don't seem to be a chore anymore. They are now accomplished by pulling back on the right analog stick - no more right trigger necessary.
  • Stadium-specific animations are in. The Yankee Roll Call was mentioned specifically.
  • There should be plenty of foul balls this year. I saw several in the few at-bats I played.
  • No spring training games this year.
  • I counted eight unlockable classic stadiums. I think more might be available by default as well.
  • No co-op play
  • You will have the option to make trades for CPU-controlled teams in franchise mode, but you won't be able to edit their rotations and lineups.
  • It was suggested to me that the demo is done and has been submitted. If that's the case, it's in Microsoft's hands now.
  • I will hit on a few of the big questions from the forum here.

Thanks!
Another nice thing about it is, not only do more drives find the gaps, but the fielders take longer to get balls that make it to the wall (opening up opportunities for risky triples). I keep thinking RT is turbo though and diving right after hits It's awesome they took Turbo out.

Always back, then forward (like the old power swing).

The manual says there are 3 swing types...not sure where they got that from??

I'm liking this aerial cam! Nice suggestion.

Also, the game got A LOT smoother...

probably going to have to lower the power if using the swing stick. It was like this last year too.

Well I just got in with my copy of the game (360). Against my better judgement I went ahead and picked it up although I was a little put off by the initial impressions here.

I guess I can live with stuttering issues as long as it's not any worse than 2K7. The stuttering didn't bother me in 2K7!! I'm all about the gameplay and if the stuttering doesn't affect gameplay then I'll be happy.

In all honesty, if this game ends up being a stinker I will be done with 2K baseball for good!!!

Getting ready to fire up my first game right now. Will have impressions in a bit..........

I really didnt want to have to buy a PS3 for my baseball fix, these framerate problems are just terrible to hear about.

Well, if you recall in 2006 the Dodgers hit 4 home runs in 5 pitches...

So, are the bat sounds the same as we've seen in most videos, or do they sound more like that trailer?

Game is sold. I can get around any other little glitches or bugs.
With all the quirky CPU trades and lineup/DL bugs this is the best news ever.

I have the game (for the PS3) My impressions:

- The framerate issue is a little overblown. Like previous posters have said - pitching and batting - NO problem. Where you see it is is in spots after the play or what seems like forever when a fly ball is hit. Not terrible, but noticable. Didn't really bother me at all truthfully.
- Lets just call a spade a spade. This game struggles when it comes to animations - specifically the transitions between them. maybe I am spoiled because of the "other" game but this is my most glaring visual fault of this game.
- The graphics to me are pretty much even from last year. Maybe slightly less - maybe. I 've said before I just don't see it. Me thinks the problem is a year later the bar has been raised and what was impressive before is now just "meh." Still a very good looking game - just not one of the best anymore.
- I LOVE the new pitching mechanic - although I am terrible at it. I'm giving up HR's like they grow on trees.
- I HATE swing stick...just cannot get the timing right. It took me exactly 30 minutes to switch back to classic hitting.
- I still have issues with the strike zone - it could be smaller. To their credit - it looks like the high strike has been toned down. However - if even a milimeter of the ball hits the strike zone - it's being called a strike. I find myself hacking wildly because of this.
- I have both baseball games. I really like this game so far. Really I do. I just don't "love" it (yet.)

PS -The signature style for Ryan Howard is more accurate on this game than the one his on the cover for. LOL!

Someone asked a few pages back about what minor league stadiums there are and one person replied there was a thread about this. I can't find it. In fact the only thread I see about it is now locked and was told to ask in the impressions thread.

So can someone point to me where there is a list of the minor league stadiums that are included in the game? Thanks.

Thankfully I'm going to try the aerial cam to see if it improves the framerate.

I really liked MLB 2k7 last year, with that being said.

Setup: Dell 24" monitor with VGA cables (right away I had to step down to 1280x720 as the framerate on 1920x1080 was horrible)

You have to update right off the bat, there is a roster update dated 2/29 - didn't see anything on Xbox Live to download yet.

You pick your favorite team. From there I played an exhibition game vs Seattle (I'm the Cardinals).

The graphics are definitely worse this year, no wow factor at all from me this year.

I didn't see any studdering while the game loaded up, but when a ball is hit to the OF with the default fielding cam, framerate.. even at 720p is definitely a bummer. Had me thinking of The Show on my neighbor's ps3 and how smooth that game played.

Swing stick 2.0 seems much better, imo so far.

You can hit pause when pitching and engage a pitching tutorial.. (much needed), after some practice, I really like the pitching .

Fielding is SO MUCH BETTER than last year and throwing is quite fun.

Sexton hit a HR against me and the crowd reacted like they should.

So far, I'm a bit disappointed, but it's an initial impression. I definitely need more games under my belt and I hope the aerial cam alleviates some of this annoying choppyness.

I got my copy around 11 am est. I have to say I really am likeing everything about the game. The first game I play was minor league game. I made a created player who was 75 rating and started him in single A. He was a stud there, so i promated him to AAA. He was good, but not great there. As far as the shuttering, I have not seen it and i am playing at 1080p. One play so far was great for me. I hit the ball the 3b couldnt handle it, the ss grabbed it with one had and threw me out. I think it is and upgrade over last year.

I played the greatest game ever.I did a fantasy draft.

First inning i give a 2-home-run up to Nomar. Don't laugh, gave him a meatball. 2 nothing them. They score another the next inning. 3 nothing them. the score stays until i go on fire. I hit a home-run with alex rios. 3 to 1. next inning i score another. 3 to 2. We go to seventh and Okajima gives up two more runs. 5 to 2. bottom of seventh i score another. 5 to 3. The next two innings go fine with Turnbow (mine). Bottom of the ninth, two straight hits I bring in Jason Kubel to bat for my pitcher with runners on first and second. He gets a single scores one and moves one to third. Now Curtis Granderson who's 4-4. He hits a smash into the left field corner. Scores the runner on third with Kubel rounding second. The left fielder picks up and throws home as Kubel rounds third. It's a close play and... SAFE! I win the game. YEAH, thats right.

BTW, i'm playing on pro and it's pretty realistic.
