MLB 2K8 News Post

Matt Blumenthal had an opportunity to demo Major League Baseball 2K8 this afternoon. His official writeup of the event will be up later this week, but we wanted to get some quick thoughts up here for you guys.
  • This game looks beautiful, the player models have improved but the real leap is in the animations. The animations move silky smooth and there is no need to worry about herky jerky animations of the past anymore.
  • I'm impressed with how intuitive and fresh the analog controls are. The pitching takes a little time to get the hang of but the new mechanics add a whole new dimension to the pitching model.
  • The baseball cards feature is surprisingly cool, expect me to have more on that later on this week.
  • In-game saves are officially in the game this year.
  • Check swings don't seem to be a chore anymore. They are now accomplished by pulling back on the right analog stick - no more right trigger necessary.
  • Stadium-specific animations are in. The Yankee Roll Call was mentioned specifically.
  • There should be plenty of foul balls this year. I saw several in the few at-bats I played.
  • No spring training games this year.
  • I counted eight unlockable classic stadiums. I think more might be available by default as well.
  • No co-op play
  • You will have the option to make trades for CPU-controlled teams in franchise mode, but you won't be able to edit their rotations and lineups.
  • It was suggested to me that the demo is done and has been submitted. If that's the case, it's in Microsoft's hands now.
  • I will hit on a few of the big questions from the forum here.

Now that I'm getting the timing down better, I'm starting to hit them as well. With that said, I was also trying to "aim for the fences" with the left-analog. I'm going to just swing with the right stick. I was enjoying it that way early on, so I'm hoping it's more to do with the left-analog, than my skills.

Would you take fielding and player models over framerate?

# 707 SeaNNyT @ 03/04/08 02:28 PM
My initial impressions is that this game looks terrible. The framerate is pretty bad at times when a ball is hit into the outfield. The textures on the grass and surrounding environment look awful, as well as the lighting.

As for gameplay, I am playing on allstar and already have hit several homeruns quite easily.

I am sure that is fixable with sliders, but this game looks so damn ugly and sloppy I don't know if I can put up with that part.

do they go far?

Last years game every single hr barely cleared the wall. i hated that

In defense of their rating of Carmona (and I speak as an Indians fan), he only did it for one year. He is probably better than an 84, but they usually do these based on three year averages. And Santana may have gone 15-13, but I'm someone who doesn't believe that a pitcher's W-L is a be all end all. He is certainly better than 15-13 and if there is a 100 pitcher in the MLB, it would be Santana.

Just finished my second game. I am liking it even more. I really love the fielding. Oh and try the aerial cam. It makes the field look bigger and the ball looks great in flight. The weird thing was that the frame rate was much better in the second game. I have played 18 innings and have not hit a HR. To me this is a good thing.

Jeff Kent hit one against me that hit high up on the foul pole. Looked cool because it was hooking foul

I enjoy the feilding in the Show better, yes I do like the throwing meter, but I still don't like some of the fielding in 2k8, I have to practice with the pitching more, I gave up 4 HR's in the game I was playing. I will give it more time tonight. The on thing that bothers me, is the game just seems really boring a bit.

all 3 in my first game were different. Kelly Johnson barely made it over....Teixera put it off the back wall of the bull-pen and Overbay made it to the first deck (skydome).

one other funny thing I noticed, where they took the fans catching the ball animation out, Rolen made a catch in foul territory to end the inning and tossed it to the fans, who sat there as it rattled around under their seats.

also, they finally solved the "small outfield" problem.....the OF is much larger and doubles are less bang-bang than in 2k7.

Just the default pro out of the box with the swing stick.

That's absolutely great to hear. Probably my biggest problem as it caused so many other issues with gameplay on the field.

Thanks!

With the swing stick do you pull back and let go for normal contact and push forward for power life before? Or do you pull back and forward everytime?
