DETROIT-It took less than a week for the Detroit Pistons to make the first big offseason splash.
Despite missing out on the playoffs by just two games, Detroit began the overhaul to their roster Thursday, sending power forward Jason Maxiell and point guard Derek Fisher to the Golden State Warriors for point guards Jarrett Jack and Charles Jenkins.
Jack, acquired from the New Orleans Hornets last July, was in the final year of a four-year deal he signed with the Toronto Raptors in 2009. Jack averaged 16 points and 7.2 assists in 79 games for Golden State, with Warriors head coach Mark Jackson preferring to use him and Stephen Curry in the starting lineup over promising second year shooting guard Klay Thompson.
Jack's acquisition will push Brandon Knight, Detroit's starting point guard, to the starting shooting guard position, head coach Lawrence Frank said. Frank did not say what would happen to Rodney Stuckey, Detroit's current starter at shooting guard, increasing widespread speculation that he might be moved this offseason.
Golden State's trade for Maxiell will free $5 million in cap space, as the team is not expected to re-sign him. Maxiell was Detroit's starting power forward, but he increasingly saw his minutes diminish in favor of fellow veteran Charlie Villanueva and rookie Andre Drummond. In 69 games, Maxiell averaged 6.4 points and 5.9 rebounds per game.
Mired behind Brandon Knight and Will Bynum on Detroit's depth chart, Fisher was reportedly considering retirement before the trade, but Fisher's agent said he would play next season for Golden State. Fisher averaged 2.7 points and 1.6 assists in 82 games for the Pistons.
Golden State is expected to pick up a long-term project point guard in the offseason, with the top target the San Antonio Spurs' Cory Joseph, a Warriors front office source said.
Detroit is expected to hold onto the other throw-in in the trade, point guard Charles Jenkins. The second-year Hofstra product played just 20 games for Golden State this season, but gives the Pistons needed depth with Will Bynum unlikely to return to the team next year.
The trade puts Pistons starters Rodney Stuckey and Tayshaun Prince in limbo. Detroit was widely expected to try and deal both Prince and Corey Maggette earlier in the season, but the team held onto both while they were in the thick of the Eastern Conference playoff race.

LOS ANGELES-Kobe Bryant was unable to will his Lakers to victory in the first two games of their series with the Nuggets. Game 3 was a different story.
Bryant scored 31 points for Los Angeles, helping them rebound from an early deficit, but the Lakers needed a missed Danilo Gallinari three-pointer with only seconds remaining to top the Nuggets 100-99 in Game 3.
Bryant's 31 led the Lakers, who used a 10-point swing over the middle two quarters to take a 75-70 lead at the start of the fourth quarter.
Gallinari led the charge back for the Nuggets, scoring 12 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter. Denver briefly took a 95-94 lead after Gallinari hit a layup with 1:33 remaining, only for Pau Gasol to knock down a three-pointer on Los Angeles's next possession to make it 97-95.
Baskets by Wilson Chandler and Andre Iguodala put the Nuggets up 99-97, but Bryant hit his only three-pointer of the night with 11 seconds left to put the Lakers up 100-99. Gallinari was able to get open with just a few seconds remaining, but his three-point attempt hit front iron and missed, sealing Los Angeles's win.
Chandler and Iguodala each finished with 12 points, while Ty Lawson tallied 14 points and nine assists. Jordan Hamilton also scored a playoff career-high 17 points off the bench for the Nuggets.
Dwight Howard collected a double-double in the win, tallying 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Gasol just missed one with 15 points and nine rebounds. Steve Nash tallied 18 points and six assists for Los Angeles as well.

SACRAMENTO-After going down early, the Oklahoma City Thunder rode a 30-13 second quarter to an easy 102-87 win over the Sacramento Kings in Game 3 of their playoff series.
All five of Oklahoma City's starters scored in double digits, led by three of them who scored 15 apiece-Russell Westbrook, Kevin Martin, and Kevin Durant. Serge Ibaka and Jeremy Lamb-the starting small forward in Scott Brooks' third straight different lineup-each had 10 points.
In addition, Perry Jones scored 11 points off the bench for the Thunder in the win.
Kings small forward Tyreke Evans finally got going for the Kings in Game 3, just as the rest of his team flamed out.
Evans scored 29 points and collected six rebounds, but just one other player scored in double figures: Aaron Brooks, who had 17 points and nine assists. The rest of Sacramento's team shot a combined 36 percent from the field (17-of-46) in the Kings' loss.
The Kings, in an 0-3 hole, face elimination from the playoffs in Game 4 on Thursday.

BROOKLYN-Brooklyn Nets P.J. Carlesimo had heard enough about the mismatch at center in the series when he decided to change his philosophy.
Missing starter Brook Lopez to match up against the Philadelphia 76ers' All Star center Andrew Bynum, Carlesimo chose to rotate through several bench players 6'7 or shorter to spell starter Andray Blatche, rather than swapping between Humphries and Blatche as he had done in the first two games.
Carlesimo's ploy worked, as the Nets rode their smaller bench players to a 93-79 win over the 76ers, with Damion James and Jerry Stackhouse giving the larger, slower 76ers low post players fits during much of the game.
Stackhouse scored 12 points and James 10 points in extended minutes at center. MarShon Brooks and Joe Johnson each scored a team-high 14 points in the Nets' win.
Deron Williams tallied a double-double in the win, scoring 11 points and dishing out 10 assists. Gerald Wallace also scored 10 points for the Nets.
Philadelphia's Thaddeus Young scored a game-high 22 points and added eight rebounds in the loss. Jrue Holiday finished behind Young with 15 points and nine assists.
Two other 76ers starters scored in double figures. Jason Richardson scored 14 points, while Evan Turner tallied 10 points and seven rebounds.
Brooklyn may not have to go small again though; Brook Lopez is expected to return for Game 4 on Thursday.

MILWAUKEE-The Miami Heat continued their romp through the playoffs Tuesday, topping the Milwaukee Bucks 113-89 in a game that pushed the Bucks to the brink of elimination from the playoffs.
Miami built a 20-point lead by the start of the fourth quarter and sat their starters through the entirety of the quarter-only for them to see Miami's bench outscore Milwaukee's starters 25-21 in the quarter.
Dwyane Wade and LeBron James led the charge against the Bucks. Wade went a perfect 11-of-11 from the field to finish with 24 points, while James scored 20 points and pulled down five rebounds.
Mario Chalmers just missed out on his first postseason double-double, tallying 10 points and eight assists in the Heat win.
Milwaukee now finds themselves in 3-0 hole entering a crucial Game 4. For the Bucks to win, they're going to need more offense from their starters: Bucks guards Brandon Jennings and Monta Ellis were the only Bucks to score in double figures in the loss. Ellis had 27 points and Jennings 20 points in the loss to Miami.
Miami center Melvin Ely made his first career postseason start as head coach Erik Spoelstra tried a different starting lineup. Ely matched up against the Bucks' Drew Gooden, scoring 11 points and holding Gooden, who had scored in double figures the previous two games, to just four points.

DENVER-The Denver Nuggets dropped the Los Angeles Lakers 104-100 to put the Lakers in an 0-2 hole, but Los Angeles might have bigger problems than that.

Kobe Bryant scored a game-high 39 points in the loss, but it was enough to top Denver's five starters, all of whom scored in double figures.
Ty Lawson notched a double-double in Denver's win, tallying a team-high 17 points and 12 assists. Behind him, Andre Iguodala and Corey Brewer each scored 15 points, with Brewer's 15 coming off the bench.
JaVale McGee and Wilson Chandler each nearly compiled a double-double for the Nuggets, with McGee posting 14 points and seven rebounds and Chandler posting 10 points and seven rebounds.
Danilo Gallinari was the fifth starter in double figures, scoring 12 points after scoring 26 in Game 1.
Along with Jamison and Bryant, Los Angeles had two other starters in double figures. Pau Gasol scored 16 points and pulled in six rebounds, while Dwight Howard scored 12 points and pulled in five rebounds.
Metta World Peace is expected to start in Jamison's place in Game 3. Lakers head coach Mike D'Antoni announced that Devin Ebanks would take Jamison's place on the active roster.

OKLAHOMA CITY-Kevin Durant may have led the Thunder in scoring, but Perry Jones stole the show.
Jones, Oklahoma City's 2012 first-round pick and a little-used substitute, exploded for 16 points in the Thunder's 102-92 win over the Sacramento Kings. Jones shot 6-of-7 from the field and drained the two three point shots he took in the game.
The Baylor product's season-high was 11 points. As a rookie, he averaged just over two points a game.
