Game 53 vs. NYY
This evening's star was simply the Tigers offense.
Ricky Romero dealt K's from the mound (10 of them), but the Yankees made him work, and he only went 5 innings. 5 guys were used from the bullpen.
Ian Kinsler teed off early with his 20th home run of the season. Prince Fielder doubled twice and had 4 RBI. Adam Jones and Andre Ethier also had RBI doubles.
Robinson Cano scored both Yankee runs in the loss.
The Tigers' win streak is now up to 8, and the odds are in favor of the Tigers tomorrow as the undefeated Doug Fister takes the mound again.

This is the first playoffs of the post-Datsyuk era. We made a tough decision and decided to trade him. He is 35 and in the last year of a $6.7 million contract. It was a hard decision, but we got James Van Riemsdyk (11 years younger) in return.
The Flyers did not make the playoffs, so this is step 1 in calling this trade a "win".
Henrik Zetterberg is the new captain. Niklas Kronwall is still an alternate, and Riemsdyk is the other alternate.
The Red Wings have a 1-0 lead over the Dallas Stars in the first round. They have played each other in the first round each of the past 3 seasons.

Game 51 @ BOS
This game had a lot of unexpected offensive output. Both aces, Verlander and Lester, had pretty bad outings.
Verlander was first to leave, giving up 5 ER (2 HR) in 5 2/3 innings. He was lucky to earn a no decision.
The Tigers teed off on Lester in the 6th. He gave up 8 runs and 17 of the 20 hits.
David Ortiz homered twice, but it wasn't enough. Jacoby Ellsbury thought that he completed the comeback with an RBI single in the 8th.
John Mayberry, Jr's solo homer in the 9th proved to be the winning run.
There is still one more game in this series!

Game 50 @ BOS
Jordan Zimmerman labored to earn this win against the Red Sox. He uncharacteristically gave up 3 runs in only 5 innings. He struck out a lot of batters early.
Mark Melancon held things down, no pun intended, over 2 innings. Scott Downs broke the bullpen's shutout streak.
Daniel Bard made it through 5 and 2/3 innings, but gave up 12 of the Tigers' 23 hits. He continues to struggle as a starter.
Adrian Gonzalez was the lone offensive star for the Sox, going 4-4 with 2 HR and 3 RBI.
Miguel Cabrera re-took the league lead with his 20th HR of the season. He added 3 of the Tigers 10 RBI. Prince Fielder was 5-6!

Game 49 @ BOS
It was truly a team effort on the part of the Tigers en route to victory. Ian Kinsler had a big 2 RBI double in the 4th to give the Tigers the lead. This was the Tigers first chance to break through against Roy Oswalt, and they did.
Michael Morse added a run off of a homer in the 5th. Avila doubled twice and scored in the game; Marco Scutaro had a sac fly to cap off the scoring.
All of the Red Sox runs came off of mistakes, not errors though. Fister hung a slider to Jacoby Ellsbury (who doubled in the 1st). Gonzalez drove him in.
After Adam Jones took a bad route to a ball in the outfield, the extra run was driven in on a 2 run homer.
The bullpen closed the door again. No save was necessary, even though Valverde came in for the last out.

Game 48 @ MIN
This one was very similar to the last one. A huge offensive explosion propelled the Tigers to victory, and it was backed by a strong performance on the mound.
Ricky Romero pitched 7 innings of 1 run ball. He struck out 7. The bullpen had another scoreless outing.
Carl Pavano had a much tougher time. He was roughed up over the course of just 3 1/3 innings, giving up 8 on 13 hits. The 4th inning was especially treacherous.
Coming off the sweep, the Tigers head off to Fenway for a set of 4 games to end the month of May.
