Game 26 @ STL

Justin Verlander returned to the mound. He had a CG shutout last time. The offense helped him out early. Austin Jackson tripled to lead off, and Andre Ethier easily drove him in with an RBI double. Miguel Cabrera touched them all and cleared the bases, still with no outs!

Trouble continued when the Cardinals missed a routine double play ball. Michael Morse, who doubled earlier, scored as a result. Adam Wainwright was removed after only 2/3 IP! All nine Tigers came to the plate in the 1st.

Alex Avila led off the 4th with a double. Jhonny Peralta drove him in. In the 6th, Avila came back up and hit a home run. The Cardinals finally responded in the 6th. With the bases loaded, Jon Jay cleared them with a triple.

Michael Morse had another clutch RBI in the 7th with 2 outs. He drove in Prince Fielder and got back one of the runs. Brad Lidge relieved Justin Verlander, who surprisingly pitched around 12 hits and only gave up 3 runs. Scott Downs followed Lidge out of the bullpen.

Game 27 @ BAL

Josh Beckett made his Tigers debut. The organization was anxious to see if their gutsy move paid off. The Tigers have very little wiggle room in their budget as a result of this deal.

Dylan Bundy pitched aggressively in the first. He paid for it when Miguel Cabrera went deep in the 1st. Prince Fielder went back-to-back with Cabrera off another fastball. After a 1-2-3 debut inning from Josh Beckett, Ian Kinsler led off the 2nd inning with his 1st home run as a Tiger.

In the 3rd, Cabrera homered again with Austin Jackson on base. Ian Kinsler led off the 4th with his 2nd homer of the day. Chris Tillman came on for Bundy. Michael Morse, who doubled, scored on an RBI groundout from Jhonny Peralta. The power surge continued when Andre Ethier hit his first homer as a Tiger.

Jhonny Peralta stretched out a triple to lead off the 7th. Ethier doubled off the wall to score Peralta. In the 8th, Michael Morse homered with 2 outs, stretching the lead to 10-0.

Josh Beckett's effort was amazing. The suspense was building, and he gave up his first hit in the 8th inning. He retired the first 22 batters! It was an amazing start for him. The first hit also scored the first run, a home run from Chris Davis.

BREAKING NEWS: Josh Beckett injured his finger, 1 out after surrendering the first hit and run of the game. He left the game.

Mark Melancon pitched for the injured Josh Beckett and did not give up anything.

Spring Training is winding down. A boatload of moves were made. Out of the "original Tigers", only Verlander, Fister, Schlereth, Alburquerque, and Valverde remain of the pitchers. Most of the position players are the same, though.

There were a couple late cuts, but they still have a chance of an in-season call up. They will definitely be here in September (Reed Johnson and Collin Balester). Relatively speaking, Randy Choate and Brad Lidge are on short leashes. In many of their short outings, they have not been up to par. If they aren't of any benefit, they will either be sent down or traded.

I don't expect problems with the rotation. However, any injury will make things dicy.

The offense is spectacular, despite being thin. Once again, no injuries please! Miguel Tejada is supposed to be for emergency only.

In terms of upgrades, Andre Ethier is better than Brennan Boesch; I just hope that I don't regret the trade down the road. I'll take Michael Morse over Delmon Young because of his flexibility on both sides of the ball. Ian Kinsler adds an element to a previously non-existent running game, in addition to being a better-fielding 2nd baseman. Geovany Soto can serve as a platoon hitter and also give some relief to Alex Avila behind the plate.

So, here's to a great season ahead!

Game 24 vs. MIA

The Tigers came into this one looking for revenge against the Marlins. In an earlier Spring Training matchup, the Marlins came away with a 1-0 victory. Just like the first game, offense started early. To lead off the 2nd, Prince Fielder muscled a solo home run to left. Geovany Soto had a solo home run of his own in the 3rd.

However, the Marlins put things together in the 4th. Hanley Ramirez and Giancarlo Stanton had back to back hits. Logan Morrison followed up with a 3 run blast.

Edward Mujica relieved Mark Buehrle. After a quiet inning for the Tigers, Miguel Cabrera doubled in Ian Kinsler who singled earlier in the 6th. Prince Fielder followed with an RBI double off the wall. Victor Martinez touched them all to clear the bases.

Al Alburquerque relieved a somewhat ineffective Brandon Beachy and had a perfect 7th inning. On the other side, Steve Cishek came in to relieve Mujica, but he surrendered a solo shot to Jhonny Peralta.

Joaquin Benoit followed Alburquerque. He allowed a run when Giancarlo Stanton doubled in Jose Reyes. Jose Valverde shut the door on the Marlins.

Game 25 @ HOU

After a quiet 1st, Michael Morse led off the 2nd with a solo home run. More power followed when Miguel Cabrera homered in the 3rd.

Jordan Zimmerman made it through the lineup once without giving up a hit. Jose Altuve led off the 4th with a single. Carlos Lee singled home Altuve, giving the Astros their first run.

Reliever Lucas Harrell found himself in trouble during the 6th. Fielder doubled, then Morse doubled off the wall, and pinch hitter Andre Ethier drove in Fielder with a sacrifice fly.

Prince Fielder homered to lead off the 8th to extend the lead. However, the Astros put pressure on the Tigers bullpen in the bottom of the inning. Brad Lidge surrendered a hit to the only batter he faced. Scott Downs did his job by striking out the only batter he faced.

In his Tigers debut, Mark Melancon came on afterwards and loaded the bases. Jed Lowrie scored on a sacrifice fly from JD Martinez. Jose Altuve was caught stealing to end the inning.

With Melancon still on, Carlos Lee struck out in the bottom of the ninth. Randy Choate retired the lefty that he faced. Jose Valverde came on for the one-out save.

Detroit Tigers Acquire Josh Beckett

What a shame for Brandon Beachy. I thought he was the answer. Yes, he's better than Scherzer and Porcello (both who I traded away earlier), but Beachy has been having trouble with command.

Silly me, I tried free agent Roy Oswalt in attempting to solve the problem. I signed him, but realized that he would be too expensive for his age.

By the title, you could tell where this went. For more salary benefit, I added Joaquin Benoit to the mix, sending him to Boston as well. Benoit wasn't as much of a problem, but he is getting up there in terms of years too. His most recent outing didn't help his cause either.

In addition to acquiring Beckett, the Tigers also recieved Mark Melancon. Despite his struggles in real life, I doubt that his ERA will transfer to a video game. Beckett is now the number 2 starter in a rotation to be reckoned with (Justin Verlander, Gio Gonzalez, Doug Fister, etc.).

Game 23 @ NYY

After a temporarily skipped start, Doug Fister returned to the mound to face the Yankees. As usual, the Tigers got the offense going early. Miguel Cabrera homered after an Andre Ethier double. Hiroki Kuroda surrendered another home run to Michael Morse in the 2nd. That trend continued in the 3rd when Cabrera homered again.

Michael Morse homered in the 4th, but this time, he drove in three. Austin Jackson singled home Alex Avila who had a hit earlier in the inning. The big inning continued when Miguel Cabrera drove in Jhonny Peralta and Austin Jackson. That was it for Kuroda (3 IP, 11 ER). Dellin Betances relieved Kuroda and ended the threat.

Nick Swisher provided the first Yankee run of the game. He led off the 6th inning with a home run. Tigers pitching previously held a 23 inning scoreless streak!

David Robertson followed Betances out of the bullpen. He allowed Jhonny Peralta to score off of an Andre Ethier single. Prince Fielder drove in Austin Jackson with a single. Ethier scored next. Boone Logan replaced David Robertson after. Logan surrendered a pinch-hit homer to Geovany Soto.
Game 21 @ PIT

The Tigers went back to work after an important day off. After a relatively quiet 1st, the Tigers lead off the 2nd with a double from Michael Morse. Morse was driven in off of a sac fly from Miguel Tejada.

More offense came in the 4th when Prince Fielder mashed a solo shot to right center. John Mayberry, Jr. followed with a double and he scored when the Pirates committed an error on a routine throw to first. Geovany Soto advanced to 2nd on the bad throw, but the Tigers couldn't capitalize.

Reliever Daniel Moskos came on for Erik Bedard in the 5th. Ian Kinsler singled, and then advanced to 2nd on a hit and run. Strategy backfired when Prince Fielder was intentionally walked. Michael Morse drove in Kinsler and Fielder with 2 outs.

The Pirates were silenced as Justin Verlander pitched a complete game shutout. He only allowed 4 hits and struck out 10 over the 9 IP.

Game 22 vs. NYY

The Tigers skipped the start of Doug Fister in order to allow Gio Gonzalez to pitch against a lefty-heavy New York Yankees lineup.

The Tigers lead off the 1st with back to back hits. After Miguel Cabrera grounded into a double play, Prince Fielder delivered an RBI single.

With one out in the 4th, Ian Kinsler doubled into the right field corner. Michael Morse followed up with a 2 run shot to left field.

Kevin Whelan came on in relief of Michael Pineda in the 5th. He surrendered an RBI double to Miguel Cabrera. Andre Ethier scored. Prince Fielder was intentionally walked, but the strategy backfired when Victor Martinez drove in Cabrera and Fielder. Martinez scored on an Ian Kinsler single.

Alex Avila, the 8th man to bat in the inning, singled home Ian Kinsler. Freddy Garcia came in to relieve Whelan (2/3 IP, 5 ER) and ended the rally.

Miguel Cabrera led off the 6th with a double. Prince Fielder followed up with yet another Tigers home run. That was the end of the offense.

Gio Gonzalez dominated the Yankees. He was the beneficiary of a generous strike zone. He had 14 Ks through all 9 IP and 0 ER. The Tigers posted their second-straight complete game shutout.

Team Notes
The Detroit Red Wings acquire Maxime Talbot from Pittsburgh in exchange for Mike Santorelli and a 2019 5th Round Pick.
Game 19 vs. ATL

Both sides started off slow. The first signs of offense came in the 3rd. The Tigers loaded the bases, but Prince Fielder grounded into a double play.

The first scoring came in the 4th. Brian McCann homered, and others were left on base later in the inning. McCann homered again in the 5th.

The Tigers didn't score until the 6th. Miguel Cabrera hit a solo shot, his 10th of Spring Training. He leads the league.

Jason Heyward homered in the 7th, and that was all for the offense. The Braves took this one, 4-1.

Team Notes
Andre Ethier and Scott Downs made their team debuts. Ethier was 1-4 and Downs struck out the only batter he faced.

Game 20 vs. MIN

The game started as an unlikely pitcher's duel, but the Tigers broke through in the 2nd. After a Victor Martinez double, Michael Morse delivered with an RBI single. Denard Span saved the inning for the Twins as he robbed Alex Avila of a home run.

In the 3rd, Andre Ethier led off with a double. Prince Fielder drove him in with a single. Michael Morse followed with his second RBI single of the day. The slumping Alex Avila then came through with an RBI single as well.

Andre Ethier had another leadoff double in the 4th, and another double by Miguel Cabrera drove him in. However, in the 5th, the Twins started stringing hits together. Danny Valencia and Denard Span had back to back hits, but a diving play by Austin Jackson prevented a third straight single. Alexi Casilla struck out to end the threat.

After a great afternoon, Jordan Zimmerman came out after 6 IP. He had 8 Ks while only giving up 4 hits. Collin Balester was his replacement. He was credited a hold for 1 1/3 innings of perfection. Scott Downs came on to pitch afterwards. He surrendered a 2 run HR to J.R. Towles.

With closer Jose Valverde on the mound, the Twins loaded the bases with one out. Pinch-hitter Miguel Sano struck out. Ben Revere struck out looking to end the game. The Tigers won 5-2 and ended a 2 game slide.

This season has already had its fair share of moves. Well, we made some more.

We had a surplus of outfield power hitters, so we traded Nelson Cruz back to the Rangers for Ian Kinsler. This eliminated the need for Placido Polanco. We wanted to get rid of Polanco because he was too expensive, considering how little we used him.

Brennan Boesch, Placido Polanco, and prospect Matt Young were sent to the Dodgers for Andre Ethier. Ethier is an average first guy, but still has power.

We signed Miguel Tejada for insurance. Hopefully, he isn't needed because that would mean that there was an injury on the right side of the infield.

Because Ethier is a lefty, we needed a righty to bat on other days. We re-acquired John Mayberry, Jr. for David Murphy and two AA prospects.

Even though it is Spring Training, the Tigers need to get out of their slump.

Game 18 @ PHI

Poor pitching plagued the Tigers. Both offenses exploded, but the Phillies won the shootout. Once again, there was too much offense for a full summary.

Game 17 @ WSH

The Tigers opened up the scoring when Prince Fielder drove in Miguel Cabrera with a double. Ian Desmond responded with a leadoff HR for the Nationals.

Both Doug Fister and Stephen Strasburg cruised through the next few innings. Craig Stammen came in for Strasburg in the 5th.

After an Austin Jackson single and steal of second base, Miguel Cabrera put the Tigers up again with a 2 run shot to center.

A Miguel Cabrera error put the Tigers in a jam in the 7th. Doug Fister gave way to situational lefty Randy Choate, who struck out pinch-hitter Xavier Paul with runners in scoring position. Octavio Dotel erased the great day for Doug Fister by allowing the tying runs to score.

The Tigers found offense in the 10th. Pinch hitters Placido Polanco and Geovany Soto had singles, then pinch-hitting Victor Martinez hit a double, driving in the run to take the lead. Austin Jackson gave the Tigers insurance with a 2 run double. Michael Morse drove in Jackson. Morse scored on a Nelson Cruz sac fly.

Joaquin Benoit closed out the game, as the Tigers extra-inning offense was all they needed.

After the game, Octavio Dotel was traded (along with a prospect) to the Angels for Scott Downs. As a result, Nate Robertson was sent to AAA, as the acquisition of Downs eliminated his chance of making the 25 man roster.

Game 11 vs. NYM

The Santana vs. Verlander pitching matchup did not live up to its full expectations, as the Tigers offense got it going early. Prince Fielder slugged a 3 run homerun off of Santana in the 1st. Justin Verlander showed no trouble of getting outs, while Johan Santana struggled to keep things close. He was gone after 4 IP.

Justin Verlander ended up shutting out the Mets through 8 IP, but Daniel Schlereth, the situational lefty, surrendered a home run to Lucas Duda, ending the shutout. He prompted the call to Jose Valverde, who surrendered a double before closing the door shut.

Austin Jackson, Victor Martinez, and Placido Polanco had 3 hits each.

Game 12 @ WSH

Gio Gonzalez retired all 12 batters he faced, but gave way to Chien-Ming Wang because ofSpring Training. After fending off a 2nd inning scoring chance, Doug Fister retired 14 consecutive batters.

With two outs in the 7th inning, Delmon Young provided the Tigers' first hit. The suspense continued as this game went to extra innings. Doug Fister provided 8 and 2/3 shutout innings.

The Nationals threatened in the 10th with Jayson Werth's leadoff double, but did not score. However, in the 11th, singles by Xavier Paul and Ian Desmond eventually led to a double steal. Ryan Zimmerman was intentionally walked by Matt Guerrier, and Jose Valverde came into the game with the bases loaded. Michael Morse's ground rule double ended the game with a win for the Nationals.

Game 13 vs. NYM

The Tigers provided the first run of the game in the 4th. After John Mayberry, Jr's triple, Miguel Cabrera drove home Mayberry with a sac fly. This is Cabrera's first start since spraining his wrist. (Cabrera also homered in the 8th.)

Jeff Stevens, who came in to relieve Jon Neise, surrendered a double to Victor Martinez (who finished with 3 hits), and Jhonny Peralta drove in Martinez with a double of his own.

Brandon Beachy was effectively wild, despite posting a stretch of 15 consecutive batters retired. He threw a lot more balls than usual, but finished with 7 shutout innings.

Detroit loaded the bases in the 7th, but damage was averted. The Tigers' bullpen managed their way through the 8th without giving up a run. Randy Choate and Octavio Dotel closed out the game and secured the victory.

Game 14 vs. BAL

Brian Matusz began the game severely fatigued. Only the poor AI management can explain how he got the start.

Delmon Young cashed in on Matusz's fatigue and clobbered a solo shot in the 2nd. The Tigers rallied with 2 outs in the 3rd with a display of more power. Miguel Cabrera hit a 2 run home run to extend the margin to 3.

The Orioles would not back down. Adam Jones responded with a solo shot in the 4th, and Chris Davis went back-to-back with Jones. Jai Miller's RBI triple tied the game at 3. An RBI groundout gave the Orioles their first lead. In a half-inning, Max Scherzer was on the hook for the loss. After allowing a sacrifice fly, Scherzer was pulled.

Austin Jackson drove home Ryan Raburn in the 5th to bring the Tigers within one. JJ Hardy's double in the 7th re-extended the margin to 2.

Reliever Alfredo Simon began to unravel in the 7th. Brennan Boesch delivered a pinch hit RBI single, after a couple Tigers' hits. They were also helped by an error.

No more progress was made as Jim Johnson got the save for the Orioles.

Game 15 @ NYM

The "new look" Tigers' offense (highlighted by acquiring Michael Morse, Nelson Cruz, and David Murphy) got going early as Miguel Cabrera continued his home run dominance. He hit his 4th HR of Spring Training in the 1st inning.

After a Nelson Cruz leadoff double, a Daniel Murphy error allowed Detroit to score their second run. In the 3rd, Prince Fielder slugged a 2 run HR. Starter Mike Pelfrey was done after 4 IP. Fielder went clubbing again off of reliever Jenrry Mejia in the 6th.

A bloop single by Cruz extended the lead to 6-0. Jhonny Peralta extended the assault with a 3 run home run in the 7th. David Murphy went back-to-back with Peralta!

Give it up for Jordan Zimmermann! He went 7 and 1/3 innings without giving up a hit! An early error by Prince Fielder eliminated the bid for perfection. Pinch-hitting catcher Vinny Rottino grounded a ball between the foul line and Miguel Cabrera at 3rd base. Call it a "cheap" hit, but sadly, it ended the no-no bid.

Game 6 @ MIA

No one ever thought that the only run, Miami's, would come in the 1st. The Tigers did outhit the Marlins in the pitching spectacle. Justin Verlander was creditied with the tough loss. He pitched the entire game for the Tigers.

Mike Stanton's RBI single drove in Hanley Ramirez who doubled early off. Heath Bell shut the door on the Tigers in a perfect 9th.

Game 7 vs. ATL

Atlanta smacked Detroit around again. Detroit was held scoreless for the second game in a row. Not to mention, Miguel Cabrera went down after failing a slide into home plate. He will be out a week with a sore wrist, and the Tigers offense will likely struggle. Prince Fielder had 2 of 3 Tigers hits.

McCann and Uggla homered again, and Bourn, Jones, Hinske, and Prado collected RBIs.

Game 8 vs. PHI

A day off did nothing good for the Tigers. All offense clicked late, but an unexpected 3 run home run by Juan Pierre off of Joaquin Benoit won it for the Phillies. Jhonny Peralta homered in the losing effort.

Game 9 vs. WSH

Detroit halted the three game skid with a win over the Nationals. Washington did go on the board first with a Ryan Zimmerman sac fly after Ian Desmond's leadoff triple.

Victor Martinez and Jhonny Peralta responded with homeruns in the first. Delmon Young's RBI in the 8th prevented the save opportunity.

Game 10 @ HOU

It took a while for the real offense to shine through. Both teams exchanged manufactured runs, but Miguel Cabrera packed the punch with a pinch-hit grand slam. He is still nursing a sore wrist.

Jordan Zimmermann only went 4 1/3 IP, but did not give up a run. Colin Balester recorded the win, but on the other side, Henry Sosa caused the Tigers to load the bases twice. He paid for it, giving up 5 ER.
Posted on April 22, 2012 at 12:22 PM.
Game 1 @ TOR

Justin Verlander was dominant as usual. I only had him go 6 and 1/3 innings because of Spring Training. Combined, the staff only gave up 5 hits. Matt Guerrier closed the shutout victory.

The overall offense did not disappoint. Sadly, Austin Jackson went hitless in 6 at bats. Ryan Raburn went hitless as well.

Fielder, Martinez, Young, Peralta, Avila, and Polanco provided the RBIs.

Game 2 vs. PHI

The Tigers held their own against the Phillies. All the scoring occured late, so reliever Daniel Schlereth got the win. The Tigers bullpen was amazing. Weinhardt, Guerrier, and Choate all recieved holds and Valverde only needed 1/3 IP for the save.

The offense did the job, but not as spectacularly. Young, Peralta, Raburn, and Polanco were hitless. Victor Martinez's 2 RBI doubles propelled the offense. Alex Avila had an RBI as well.

Game 3 @ ATL

Atlanta was a tough matchup. The game went to 11 innings! I was able to hold off using Jose Valverde, who got the win. Both offenses performed well. Multiple Braves wreaked havoc on the basepaths. Martin Prado had 2 RBIs, and even Tim Hudson chipped in with an RBI knock of his own. However, their relief faltered as both Kris Medlen and Johnny Venters gave up 3 ER each.

Tigers' relievers came through again. Holds were credited to Choate, Benoit, and Schlereth. Colin Balester went 2 and 2/3 innings perfect. We saw our first Tigers homeruns with Fielder and Peralta, who sealed the deal in the 11th.

Game 4 vs. ATL

Atlanta brought the house in the rematch. Rick Porcello made his last start as a Tiger, as his team only mustered a run in the 1st. Porcello gave up 5 ER on 10 hits in only 4 and 2/3 innings! Miguel Cabrera had the only RBI for the Tigers.

Powerhouses Brian McCann and Dan Uggla homered for Atlanta in the 8-1 embarrassment.

Game 5 vs. TOR

Toronto was tougher this time out. This one went 13 innings! Matt Guerrier led the Tigers' bullpen to a victory. Brandon Beachy saw his first action as a Tiger with 3 shutout relief innings.

Colby Rasmus homered in the losing effort, while Prince Fielder provided some power for the Tigers.

Ryan Raburn was the offensive star for the Tigers with a triple and the walk-off single in the 13th.
