Though it involved giving up prized prospect Mike Podell, the Tigers traded him along with Kendrys Morales to the Mets for Ike Davis.

Davis was the 2012 NL Comeback Player of the Year, hitting 24 home runs. He is off to an extremely hot start, already set to shatter that pace.

Davis will obviously platoon against righties, anchored between Mike Napoli and Howie Kendrick in an already potent lineup. However, a raise will be due when his contract expires in 2015.

Games 17-20 @ TEX

L: 2-1 (12)
Mike Napoli's solo shot in the top of the 12th inning was believed to be the game-winner until Delmon Young walked off for the Rangers. Cole Hamels struck out 10 in 8 IP, earning the tough no decision. Neftali Feliz pitched 10 shutout innings, before giving up the Napoli bomb. John Axford takes the loss.

L: 6-0
Jered Weaver got down early, and Colby Lewis frustrated the Tigers. Detroit suffers the rare back-to-back losses.

W: 8-3
The Tigers climb back into the series with a win led by the offense.

W: 5-4
The Tigers escape with a series split. Miguel Cabrera hits 2 home runs, driving in four. But, Ryan Braun's solo homer was the difference. John Axford finally converts his first save of the season, only having two opportunities to this point.

Just when you thought the Tigers' bullpen was good enough, it got even better. Due to a surplus of lefties, the Tigers traded Daniel Schlereth and a prospect to the Angels for Ernesto Frieri.

The move also boots Aroldis Chapman from his part-time setup role (formerly shared with Ryan Cook).

Frieri will likely make his Tigers debut in the upcoming series at home against the Twins.

The Tigers try to break even with the Texas Rangers in the finale of this four game series. The Tigers dropped the first two, but rebounded solidly on Sunday night.

W: 11-3
The Tigers teed off on former teammate Jon Lester and the Angels bullpen. Hunter Pence also makes a statement versus his former team, but David Freese stole the spotlight with 5 hits for the Tigers. Brett Lawrie goes down late, and he will miss up to 10 days.

W: 10-1
The Tigers dominate yet another lefty in CJ Wilson. Ryan Braun leads the way with an unbelievable 5 for 5 performance; he only lacked the home run in a cycle quest.

W: 7-0
Justin Verlander closes the series out with a complete game shutout. His ERA stands at a miniscule 0.53; he's had four starts.

It's amazing what can go down in a matter of hours. This is the story of how one bad start turned into a completely different ball club.

April 6, 2013: Jon Lester has yet another shaky start, barely making it through the 5th. He gave up 11 hits, but thankfully only 3 runs.

The Tigers try to gauge Lester's value and find a great opportunity in swapping Lester for Howie Kendrick. (Remember, the Tigers know that they have to get rid of Ian Kinsler before the deadline because they can't afford to re-sign him.) The Tigers added the aging Lance Berkman and a prospect to the deal, in order to also acquire Kendrys Morales.

Knowing that Hunter Pence is also in the last year of a deal, the Tigers felt that they may have to part ways with him. Therefore, the Tigers unofficially engaged in a three-team deal, knowing that they needed an elite outfielder and another starter.

With those deals, the Tigers received Ryan Braun and Jered Weaver. Ian Kinsler heads to the Brewers, and Hunter Pence heads to the Angels.

Fiscally speaking, the Tigers are barely safe. They have less than $500K in budget space, but there are no major contracts to renew this offseason. However, another budget scare next year is inevitable.

Transactions

The Tigers acquired prospect Brandon Guyer for Brandon Moss and another prospect. After failing to survive the cut down to the 25-man roster, Guyer was named the AAA RF starter.

The Tigers re-acquired Jon Lester (in addition to prospects) for Anibal Sanchez and Carlos Villanueva. Despite a win, Sanchez had serious control issues in his last start. Lester was originally forced to leave the Tigers due to financial troubles following their World Series win over the Marlins.

Budget Troubles

Preliminary reports show that the Cubs, Diamondbacks, Nationals, Pirates, Rangers, Reds, and Tigers are projected to outspend their budgets.

Rumors

2013 is a contract year for both Ian Kinsler and Hunter Pence. Because management doubts that they can afford pay raises to both, Detroit is prioritizing Pence and shopping Kinsler. A move will likely not come until the Trading Deadline, because the Tigers want to reap all possible benefits of Kinsler's production. Reportedly, there is a deal in place with the Indians, who would give up Jason Kipnis and prospects. That deal would give the Tigers money to negotiate a contract extension with Pence.

2013 is also a contract year for Lance Berkman. The Tigers aren't actively shopping him, because he fits the platoon role well. They expect Berkman to retire at the end of this season. Because of Berkman's age, he will not recieve a contract extension even though a paycut would make sense for both sides.

Compared to more recent years, the FBS Quality Committee was very active this offseason. We granted more independence petitions than ever before.

Our major focus this offseason was to group weaker programs more efficiently. Also, we restored some traditional inter-conference relationships.

Firstly, the FBS Quality Committee grants independence to:
  • Michigan State.
  • SMU.
  • Navy.

Secondly, the FBS promotes:
  • Arkansas State to the East Division of Conference USA.
  • Texas State to the West Division of Conference USA.
  • UCF to the Big East.

Thirdly, the FBS Quality Committee demotes:
  • Duke to the Big East.
  • Rice to the Sun Belt.
  • UAB to the Sun Belt.
  • Washington State to the WAC.
  • San Jose State to the WAC.
  • New Mexico to the WAC.
  • Toledo to the East Division of the MAC.

Lastly, for various reasons, the FBS Quality Committee moves:
  • Rutgers to the Coastal Division of the ACC.
  • Houston to the East Division of Conference USA.
  • San Diego State to the West Division of Conference USA.

We have to give lots of credit to Michigan State. Amidst all of the fallout regarding their desire for FBS independence, the Spartans won what will likely be their final B1G Championship in their history. And, honestly, it couldn't have come against a better opponent: (2) Ohio State.

The Spartans and Buckeyes have faced off in the past 3 B1G Championships, after the Spartans had played Wisconsin in every other season prior.

The exit fee has been paid, and Michigan State has won its final conference game.
