Finally, the efforts of Coach Mark Dantonio and Offensive Coordinator Norm Chow have paid off. Three years of spread offensive recruiting shined brightly on the field in full force.
Michigan State had always shown these unconventional elements, but never to this degree of success. Traditional quarterbacks Andrew Maxwell and Tyler O'Connor stood in the way.
Perhaps, we have a Heisman candidate in Austin Olsen. He was 20/28 with 212 passing yards. He threw for 2 touchdowns. He also ran for three touchdowns on 125 yards.
The success came at the expense of Penn State, who scored no points while allowing 55.

(1) Michigan State was set to return to South Bend this weekend with only one goal: leave with the Megaphone. It was highly contested and tense, but the deed was done.
2-time Kicker of the Year, Willie Hawkins, went 5/5 on field goals, including the game-winner as time expired.
The Spartans open conference play next week against Penn State.

I must admit. The FBS Quality Committee was left with their heads scratched by the number of upsets this year. There was only one undefeated in the National Championship, and the #2 team had 2 losses.
This offseason, we want to put a premium on grouping teams of similar strength and geography. We aren't rewarding successful underdogs after the poor examples of Toledo and Iowa State.
The Big 10, Pac-12, and SEC will remain as "super-conferences", but we look to expand some non-AQ conferences.

Secondly, the FBS Quality Committee mandates that:

- Tulsa joins the West Division of Conference USA.
- Iowa State joins the East Division of Conference USA.
- Toledo joins the Big East.
- Oregon State joins the Mountain West Conference.

Records
Kicker Willie Hawkins sets a new NCAA record for field goals made in a season with 40.
Coach Mark Dantonio extends his current winning streak to 70 games.
Cornerback Connor Jackson sets a new school record with 10 interceptions in a season.
Players Leaving
The Spartans had 2 1st Round selections, 1 2nd Round selection, and 2 6th Round selections.
We also persuaded 100% of our underclassmen to stay, rather than declare pro.
There was one transfer.
Recruiting
For the second consecutive season, Michigan State was ranked with the best incoming recruiting class. Thankfully, we filled all needs before the offseason.

After surprisingly rolling over (2) Ohio State in the B1G Championship, Michigan State rightly earned their berth in the National Championship.
Their opponent, Florida State sneaked into the game after not being eligible for the ACC Championship. (They lost the berth in a tiebreak.) The favorite, Georgia Tech, was upset by Clemson, thus allowing the opportunity. Pac-12 champion, (5) Stanford, was originally predicted to win the berth.
Aside from that, the game began as a defensive struggle. Michigan State was never down, but their largest 1st half lead was only a touchdown. Florida State was shut out in the 2nd half, and the Spartan passing attack made some key connections. 10 unanswered points late sealed the deal for the championship.

Even though it occurred against Minnesota, Tyler O'Connor and Aaron Burbridge broke passing and receiving records, respectively.
O'Connor struggled out of the gate early, throwing three interceptions. He finished with a school-record 439 passing yards. Burbridge was on point all game long, scoring a school-record 4 receiving touchdowns on a school-record 16 receptions.
Michigan State completes their fifth-consecutive perfect regular season with this win. If Ohio State wins out, we will have a "Game of the Century" in the B1G Championship to determine a representative in the National Championship.

The Spartans tried out the Pistol. In terms of points scored, it worked. But Tyler O'Connor threw 6 interceptions! Do they balance his 7 touchdowns? I doubt it, because that's still a bad ratio.
Experimenting is set to continue. Meanwhile, the Spartans are now 9-0.

Thankfully, the Spartans are making the most of this easy stretch of schedule. They need this offensive confidence heading into a tough mid-season matchup versus Notre Dame.
In the past, the ND/MSU game has occured in either Week 4 or 5. However, the addition of Toledo and Iowa State to the Big 10 caused the conference schedule to start sooner.

Mark Dantonio demanded that his team kept going on, even after the outcome had been decided. This game was most certainly personal.
Two offseasons ago, Michigan State was coming off of their second-straight National Championship when they recieved some shocking news. Pat Narduzzi, the then-DC at MSU, said he found a "better job". That job, unknown to the public at the time, was Head Coach at Clemson.
Dantonio thought that consecutive National Championships would be enough to keep Narduzzi on his staff. He was incorrect.
Ever since Narduzzi left, this game has been circled in red. The blowout was intended for Narduzzi to regret his comments.
