Good call, Flawless. I will likely wait for the Vita version.

I'm thinking FFX and Kingdom Hearts for the PS2 and if I get another DS (either buy another DSLite off eBay or Craigslist or buy a DSi new), I'll get Chrono Trigger.

The DS looks to have a good library of RPG games I could get into:

Mario & Luigi: Inside Bowser's Story
Mario & Luigi: Partners In Time
Chrono Trigger
Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks (I played the other DS Zelda game and really liked it)

How are the Dragon Quest games ... too tough for a rookie like me?

What about The World Ends With You?

I'd also take games similar to Hotel Dusk: Room 215. Not an RPG but those story-based games are a blast.

(shamelessplug)

I personally think that Ash and Ash II: Shadows for iOS (the former is also out on Android, the latter is soon to follow), both developed by SRRN Games, are excellent.

DS has a lot of good RPGs. Radiant Historia would be another worth checking out.

I never could get into the Dragon Quest series, but I doubt you would have any trouble playing those. Maybe try IX on DS, otherwise, I wouldn't bother - slow and tedious are words that come to my mind when describing that series.

The World Ends With You has an overwhelming amount of mechanics and it takes some time to really come to grips with the combat.

If you like Hotel Dusk, you should definitely check out 999.

LOL....whatever version of Jack Frost that is, it looks like a Pokemon.

Oh crap....I said the "P" word in a starter RPG thread.

Actually I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet, especially when the DS came into the discussion. The series was probably the gateway RPG for most of my generation (and ones to follow). It doesn't get much simpler than Pokemon in the beginning, and yet there's a reason there's a 260 reply thread about it burning up this very forum right now. It's addicting as hell, and probably the only reason I don't play it anymore is that I've more or less swore off Nintendo. The Sony systems and PC take up enough of my time, there'd be nothing left if I went for Microsoft or the big N.

And, playing off what Flawless said, there's a Dragon Quest for the PS2 I can't believe I forgot to mention. I put many, many hours into Dragon Quest VIII, and it's also very easy to get into (pretty much all Level-5 RPG's are). The Dragon Quest series itself is a throwback to the old RPG days, which is where the slow and tedious part comes in. I would say you'll get a pretty good idea whether you can handle a game like that if you play any of the SNES-era RPG's and like them.

But hey, at least your main character can turn Super Saiyan!

Still not sure why Square hasn't released (or been allowed to release?) their PS2 games on PS Network. I would love to have FFX, FFXII, KH1, KH2, and a bunch of others on my PS3.

In KH's case, I'd be surprised if those ever see the PSN because Birth By Sleep never even made it to a downloadable format (specifically, for the PSPGO). One of the best games on the system was unplayable on the GO because somebody didn't want it to be in digital form. And since Squenix had no trouble releasing Dissidia to the PSN store, who else to point the finger at but Disney?

As for the others...it's early yet in this downloadable PS2 games era - there aren't that many of them out, and even fewer big-name titles. FFX probably won't seeing as it's getting an HD release, but I wouldn't be too surprised to see X-2, and XII make it there eventually. Both worked fine on the 60 GB back when I had it - there shouldn't be any compatibility issues.

Re: RPG newcomer, what would you recommend?

I'm confused by some of the choices here. I wouldn't classify them as RPGs at all, just other games with some RPG elements stapled on.

Anyways, if you have a Wii, I highly recommend Xenoblade Chronicals. Easily the best JRPG of this gaming cycle. As far as western RPGs, you can't go wrong with the Mass Effects or the Fallouts (even the old ones). If you don't mind going back to older games, Knights of the Old Republic is great as is Tales of Symphonia, Kingdom Hearts I and II, Disgaea 1, FF tactics, the Mario RPGs (Paper Mario, Mario & Luigi) and finally Earthbound, although you'd need an emulator for that.
