Re: Assassin's Creed III

It's annoying that the game repopulates forts if you walk outside and then walk back in. That is one of my pet peeves in all video games. At least have the soldiers show up in a group outside of the wall instead of resetting their positions.

Re: Assassin's Creed III

Can't say enough how bland and forgettable Connor is as a character. Best thing about him is how he gets around the world and killing things. Even Altair had more personality in ACI. He was pretty bland too but at least he had character flaws, heavy handed though they were, they were there.

Connor is that he seems to be plot stupid. He does stupid things only because the plot tells him to. As he has no discnernable personality otherwise that would make me believe he's just actually stupid.

Most I got was how he seems to be completely asexual. But that just futher dehumanizes him. If he were just awkward around girls that'd be better than being apathetic to them.

Haha, I like Connor a lot, mainly because he's a total badass.

Then again, I seem to be opposite of a lot of you in here who loved the last two games and don't like this one as much. IMO, this is BY FAR the best game in the series... but it is what it is.

Re: Assassin's Creed III

I beat this a few days ago. It was good, but not great. Brotherhood is still the premier AC experience to me, although this is still certainly a better game than the dud Revelations was.

The first five sequences were pretty boring to me, but after that it got a lot better. I didn't really dislike any of the main characters, but felt they should have done more with Connor.

Naval battles were the most fun part of the game to me.

Re: Assassin's Creed III

Finished the game myself:

Connor's Story:
Fairly mediocre, they really didn't use the setting as well as they should have, with limited interactions with all the famous names available. In the end, Connor isn't loathsome, but he isn't likeable either, he's just bland and forgettable.

Desmond's story:
Ugh, horrible. Some of the missions you do as Desmond aren't bad, but the story just doesn't make sense in so many ways and is completely unsatisfying.
Spoiler

Pacing:

Better than the hot mess that was Revelations, but nowhere near as well told as II and Brotherhood. Ezio's story sucked you in and made you rally behind him, Connor's did not, much of the pull of AC3's story was just the remaining flickers from AC2/2.5.

Gameplay:

The improved combat wasn't really all that different, a little faster paced I guess but not some great marked improvement, making those controls context sensitive was a great loss IMO. No more taking frustrations out on just some random guy, no more killing some fool citizen for pushing you, and it also made the entire game feel less free. What they should have improved is the free running mechanics, especially when they are going to clutter the landscapes as they did, this extends to horses as well. Nothing like trying to run between two things, only to have Connor get "stuck" climbing or just stuck period. Hunting is OK, but it got boring quick, not enough variations in wildlife and things were just too easy to track and kill.

Side Missions:

Building the homestead was better than just buying shops and such in previous games, but the payoff was pretty crappy. Having to use some rudimentary trading system to get money out of the effort was lame (especially when money was abundant and the things to spend it on too few) and the crafting was fairly useless since the equipment was so lackluster. Assassin training felt like busywork with very little tangible reward, even something as simple as assigning skill points per level, or giving them Assassin robes, something would have helped. It all felt so unceremoniously pointless.

Equipment:

I feel this needs it's own section, because previous games gave you lots of equipment to upgrade and buy, whereas this game I changed pistols once and swords once because they were the only time something was better than what I had, and even then the differences were negligible. I also really missed the gadget creation, maybe they should have done the obvious and made Franklin like Davinci.

Glitches:

This was pretty bad, nothing huge and game breaking, but lots of little glitches. Floating people, busted animations, people talking without faces moving in cut scenes, broken scripts, etc. It felt sloppy. By far the glitchiest thing was the double holster, I built it and I think it was usable once, the second gun disappeared for a time and after that Connor would never fire the second gun, he would just reload the first, at one point it indicated I had 4 shots, but he would still only shoot once then reload. Speaking of glitches, after the credits
Spoiler

Ship Combat:

By far the best thing about the game, and I wholeheartedly agree that it needs a game based around the mechanic. The combat was maybe just a tad too fast paced and the sailing mechanics could be tweaked with more realism, but it was great.

Animus:

Seems like an odd category, but I have to put it in here. Some of it was great, other parts were not. It spoiled some plot points, IE:
Spoiler
Or, and I understand that some of these people are real, but it failed to account for the content of the game, IE:
Spoiler
I also didn't care for the abundance of jabs at Americans with no retort or balance, just a string of unnecessary insults.

Conclusion:

I'd give the game a 7.5, too much of it was mundane, the story failed to aggressively use the time period, poor pacing, glitchiness, it all just made for a somewhat mediocre experience overall.

Re: Assassin's Creed III

I loved the killing in this game and much like the older games, the type of kill animations you got depended on your weapon that you were using. Some pretty cool kill animations I did.

1. Kill one guy and turn around shooting another guy in the heart with my arrow instantly killing him.

2. Knocking the enemy's rifle up in the air, catching his rifle in mid air and then shooting him in the head with his own rifle.

3. Doing step 2 with the enemy's long sword and stabbing him with his own sword.

4. Dodging out of the way causing the enemy to stab and kill one of his own.

5. Impaling 2 guys with the same bayonet at the same time.

6. Doing the flipping neck break kill move.
