I thought the story behind Desmond was ... WEIRD. Knowing that the backdrop of this series is pretty out there, this seemed even more out there. It took a long time to get into the core story of the animus, too. Patience was really key to beating the game, because it peaked at least 10 hours in.

I never felt compelled to trade and make things, so to me, the homestead never really competed with the Assassin's den. This took away a major element from previous games, which also took away from overall emersion. Weapon upgrades were hard to come by. Side missions like racing on rooftops for Ben Franklin's encyclopedia pages, only to realize that you never really met up with him after was a disappointment. Perhaps it was my fault, but I never really found the right people or the right raw materials to craft anything cool. That brings me to my next point ... the game wasn't all that intuitive when it came to alternate missions.

I'm not completely disappointed with it despite the hard critiques, but I really can't wait to turn the page with Black Flag. Especially on next gen, because environments and weather were LIGHTS OUT on PS3. That, and the overall movement engine that can't be beat. There's a lot to build on. I just didn't really like AC3, I guess.
I despised Desmond's missions, it really bothered me, I just wanted to get them over with, and you shouldn't feel that way when playing a good game. Every time it took me back to Desmond when I was so involved in the other world, I just shook my head and said not this **** again, I know how you feel.
