Madden NFL 15's Five Areas Which Need Improvement for Next Year

Little by little, the Madden series continues to chip away at its long list of legacy issues and shortcomings. Madden 15 is a solid step better than its predecessors (Connected Career mode bugs aside), but EA seems to timid to take that gigantic leap that so many other series have already taken. The leap that NBA 2K took when you could look at a picture of James Harden and not be able to tell the difference between a game and real life, or the leap The Show took when little things like a beach ball being knocked around the stadium wasn't just a clever detail - it was a clever detail built on hundreds of others.

These are arbitrary examples, of course. When and if games have reached that new level of realism is largely a subjective thing, but if there's a consensus, and I think there is, it's that Madden hasn't made that leap yet. So we have to ask ourselves: Why not, and what can they do to get there? Well, here are five things that would almost assuredly make the Madden series a part of the growing number of video games that have already given us the "wow" factor it so desperately needs.

1. Signature Animations Across The Board

Look, I don't think any of us are expecting Madden to give each and every player their own unique style. There are only so many ways you can look when running, defending, receiving, and tackling. But there needs to be more variation, and I think that begins with a separate set of animations for each kind of player.

Have a physical corner who loves to get his hands dirty? There needs to be an animation for that kind of defensive back. Have a running back that loves to go head first right at the defense? There needs to be an animation for that. As of right now, we have a pool of what seems to be only a handful or two of animations for each position - all which leave you with no visual distinction between one player or another.

2. Penalties

How is it possible that we still don't have working penalties? Not having one of the most called penalties in football (interference) working in the game is absolutely unacceptable at this point. If you have to rework the engine to get there, then now is the time to do it.

3. Special Teams Variance

This one speaks for itself. No blocked kicks, no returned punts or kicks for the CPU, and terrible ball physics in the kicking game. It's an exaggeration to say that special teams is a third of football, but it isn't an exaggeration to say that it plays a significant role every game. If EA is so worried about this affecting the online community, than having a simple workaround with sliders should do the trick.

4. Variation in Presentation

I'm one of the few who thinks that Nantz and Simms are fine choices for a broadcast booth, but why is that our only option? Disc space is no longer a real issue, and audio can't possibly take up as much memory as some of the other fine details in next-generation gaming, so why can't this be done? Every Sunday, we aren't just used to hearing Nantz and Simms, we are also used to hearing John Buck, Tom Hammond, etc. There's no excuse not to try something a little new, especially when Madden is one of the few game series that refuses to bring anything new to the table. For once, it would be nice to see them innovate.

5. Make The Field Bigger

This isn't a literal suggestion, but one thing that EA's football games have always struggled with is the size of the football field. Everything is always far too cluttered, especially in the passing game. Balls need to hit the ground with more regularity (this year's iteration is a huge improvement here), there needs to be more one-on-one situations in the passing game, there needs to be room for battles in the secondary, etc. Make it feel like we are on the field, and that ever step to one side or the other makes a difference.

What do you think we push Madden NFL to the next level?

All 5!!! Plus some of my own from playing the game so far...

1. Customization for equipment-How is it that 2K and the Show has this down, EA used to, but now it's just a joke!
2. Auto Saving-For some reason it seems to not only mess up loading files but also restarting the same freaking SEA/CAR moment over too many times.
3. Play call menus need to return back to how it was..
4. CFM needs a practice mode and there should be practice unis with it too whether in CFM or in the normal practice setting.
5. Play calling in the NFL constantly changes, there needs to be a better and more accessible way of creating plays. For example Seattle's Jet Sweep Read option with Percy Harvin..

How about an owner mode that freaking WORKS?

I haven't been able to play the darn thing sim-style without going bankrupt.

And as the 100,000+ owners of the Green Bay Packers have shown (by publicly releasing their balance sheets when no other team would), it's virtually IMPOSSIBLE to lose money owning an NFL team.

Forget about next year lets fix this year first.

I mean seriously what's different from last years CFM. Confidence

Well Iam confident we will be waiting until October next year to play a semi decent game.

I definitely agree with this article.

The game needs more emotions. Show the QB slam his fist to ground when sacked, show my Mike back slap the hip of a linemen when his suspects a run or pass. Let me see the QB slap his helmet on audibles or in loud stadiums etc...

I think the dev team could please many of us on the thread if they address the sliders issue. Rebuild them or whatever it takes but please make them work. As important provide us a very detailed description of what each slider will do when you change it. There are many different things we all want added but IF EA can nail down the sliders I truly think many of us on here would very excited.

What's scary now is that sliders are the 800lb gorilla in the room. No one from the madden dev team can explain anything related to sliders that would be helpful to us. I would respect EA lot more if you just manned up and said "we have no clue what they truly do, but we are committed to fixing them for our loyal and patient fan base". I would really be floored if Rex and some of the other devs would come on here and share with us what sliders they are using. Seems like a fair request from us loyal customers. I will be waiting.....

None of these suggestions mean ish, until the people at EA get a team of actual hardcore players to make game reccomendations. The stats in this game are pathetic. Season game logs dont even show the week the stats represent, just random game stats. Also the stat overlays that they do show in-game, such as upcoming schedule and standing, appear for 2 seconds, rendering them useless because I cant read it fully.

The rest of the bugs and issues would have no choice to be fixed if the programmers actually played the game for more than one exhibition game and one Franchise game. Either that or they are just ignoring the issues that have plagued this game for about 3-4 years straight now.

Rex mentioned last November (2013) DPI was a year or two away from being worked on.

Also, looks like Clint had a discussion a few days ago via Twitter and this was his conclusion:

So far everybody wants penalties, but wants some way to control them. So, a balance between true sim and fun seems to be consensus.

I think EA needs to allow for the custom playbooks to be used in connected careers offline. I'm not sure if they do it for online because I haven't tried it. It's extremely frustrating spending all that time to create the perfect playbook but you can't use it on most of the modes on the game. I hate to choose to be a coach and you don't look like him but when it's time to choose a playbok you have to choose from generic or team specific playbooks... this has to be an easy fix right? complete oversight in my opinion.

If the robotic, clunky, choppy player movement is not addressed and addressed correctly, then none of the other stuff matters...at all. If we are talking gameplay, the way these players move need to be #1, then all else will fall into place. I find it ridiculous the defensive animations were sped up to counter getting beat. It looks awful. Why no not motion capture players actually playing on a field, instead of in a room with cushioned mats. The players are still gliding/hovering on the grass, and it is a major eyesoar.

Do away with Game Prep its a waste of time...seemed cool at first but now I just delegate...If you want to do XP correctly then have players gain XP based on in game performance. This confidence meter is a joke...it has no tangible relation to what we are doing in game.

Whoever said this game is made for head to head play is right on. Because you cant have a realistic game versus the cpu on a consistent basis at all.

It's definitely a more immersive franchise mode. Just take what's there and also add Madden 06's features and it would be amazing.

Madden's physics are non existent. I wish I had a video of it but I saw Jimmy Graham trip over a player and was perpendicular the ground with BOTH feet off the ground. Instead of falling flat on his face, he kinda hovers forward as player gets from under his legs and then the legs just stick back into the ground and he never falls. From literally falling on his face to back running because Madden players models are just a center mass at the stomach and the arms and legs and everything are just ragdoll effects.
