Madden NFL 15's Five Areas Which Need Improvement for Next Year

Little by little, the Madden series continues to chip away at its long list of legacy issues and shortcomings. Madden 15 is a solid step better than its predecessors (Connected Career mode bugs aside), but EA seems to timid to take that gigantic leap that so many other series have already taken. The leap that NBA 2K took when you could look at a picture of James Harden and not be able to tell the difference between a game and real life, or the leap The Show took when little things like a beach ball being knocked around the stadium wasn't just a clever detail - it was a clever detail built on hundreds of others.

These are arbitrary examples, of course. When and if games have reached that new level of realism is largely a subjective thing, but if there's a consensus, and I think there is, it's that Madden hasn't made that leap yet. So we have to ask ourselves: Why not, and what can they do to get there? Well, here are five things that would almost assuredly make the Madden series a part of the growing number of video games that have already given us the "wow" factor it so desperately needs.

1. Signature Animations Across The Board

Look, I don't think any of us are expecting Madden to give each and every player their own unique style. There are only so many ways you can look when running, defending, receiving, and tackling. But there needs to be more variation, and I think that begins with a separate set of animations for each kind of player.

Have a physical corner who loves to get his hands dirty? There needs to be an animation for that kind of defensive back. Have a running back that loves to go head first right at the defense? There needs to be an animation for that. As of right now, we have a pool of what seems to be only a handful or two of animations for each position - all which leave you with no visual distinction between one player or another.

2. Penalties

How is it possible that we still don't have working penalties? Not having one of the most called penalties in football (interference) working in the game is absolutely unacceptable at this point. If you have to rework the engine to get there, then now is the time to do it.

3. Special Teams Variance

This one speaks for itself. No blocked kicks, no returned punts or kicks for the CPU, and terrible ball physics in the kicking game. It's an exaggeration to say that special teams is a third of football, but it isn't an exaggeration to say that it plays a significant role every game. If EA is so worried about this affecting the online community, than having a simple workaround with sliders should do the trick.

4. Variation in Presentation

I'm one of the few who thinks that Nantz and Simms are fine choices for a broadcast booth, but why is that our only option? Disc space is no longer a real issue, and audio can't possibly take up as much memory as some of the other fine details in next-generation gaming, so why can't this be done? Every Sunday, we aren't just used to hearing Nantz and Simms, we are also used to hearing John Buck, Tom Hammond, etc. There's no excuse not to try something a little new, especially when Madden is one of the few game series that refuses to bring anything new to the table. For once, it would be nice to see them innovate.

5. Make The Field Bigger

This isn't a literal suggestion, but one thing that EA's football games have always struggled with is the size of the football field. Everything is always far too cluttered, especially in the passing game. Balls need to hit the ground with more regularity (this year's iteration is a huge improvement here), there needs to be more one-on-one situations in the passing game, there needs to be room for battles in the secondary, etc. Make it feel like we are on the field, and that ever step to one side or the other makes a difference.

What do you think we push Madden NFL to the next level?

Am I correct in assuming that WR/DB interactions were not listed because of the widely held belief that it will be worked on for the next release?

Anyway, my pet peeve that needs to be improved upon is CFM owner mode feedback. I want to be able to track attendance and revenue week to week (and year to year)via a line graph. Give me graphs and charts EA!!

I also want to compare my revenue to the rest of the NFL. In my Ravens CFM I average ~$9 million a home game. How does that stack up with the rest of the league?

Signature ball carrying/running animations are huge on my list. My biggest issue with Madden is that it always feels stale & boring after a couple months & it's mainly due to all players feeling similar & having the same animations. Signature animations would go a long way in improving Madden. Ball carrying animations need to be dynamic as well (players should hold the ball close to their body when in traffic & swing the ball freely when accelerating in the open field)

The Infinity engine needs some major cleaning up as well. We should not still be seeing RB's run up their linemans back without pushing off. I'm still seeing things like players arms going behind their back with the ball stuck in their hand, player warping, morphing/player clipping, players walking right through other players after the play, etc.. All these things need to be fixed 1st before going forward.

True Step for all 22 players on the field

True gang tackling (no more players flopping down like ragdolls on multiple hit tackles)

Real Living Worlds with actual IN GAME players on the sidelines (with names on their jerseys) & cheerleaders.

Lastly the animations overall need to be smoothed out. Madden still has that glitchy feeling almost as if it skips frames on certain animations.

Incredible how signature animations are conversation for next year, when the QB animations from last year do not work in 15. Fix what's already in the game first for crying out loud.

time to implement a new total control passing system equivalent to back breaker. that would be directional passing. This already exists to some capacity in Madden with the lead passing, they just need to flesh it out more.

give users the option to have all catches be user catches if they want, including ints.

agree with the field size. make a yard feel like a yard.

add more sliders. example: add a goal line defense slider

the kicking game move it to one analog control. its time to do away with one control for aiming and on for arc. moving everything to the right analog or left analog stick would make ball placement on the field more critical.

agree with the penalties, get them in the game and make them accurate as possible, and please build on the supposed real life sidelines.

My 5 areas for improvement (and 4 of them we had before in past Maddens before they stripped them out)

1. Being able to edit everything at anytime of the season alon w/ draft classes
2. 1 button 32 team control- exhausting wasting 30mins to control all teams
3. Created Roster depth Chart lock. Tired of reordering depth chart after starting Connected Franchise.
4. Pregame and halftime shows- what happened to home team entrances?
5. Working penalties- it can't be that hard

First off, I think Madden is an improvement this year but it could be better as you've said before here are my ideas and feedback Rex . I think presentation and graphics are phenomenal and made a big leap this year. When I saw the QB run outs using CBS presentation I jumped off my sofa yelling because its one of things I've wanted for a while. I know some would say its not important but I disagree its the small things that count. The only thing that ruins it for me is that the stadium transforms when you start a game. Maybe we can get actual footage from around the stadium & city like NHL 15 does. I would love more in depth commentary from Jim and phill (Ie. Player in jury's, pro bowl selections players have had, player roles in the game plan etc.). Crowd reactions are better this year but the energy from stadium to stadium should vary. When we play in Seattle the fans should be going crazy and crowd noice should be at highest. If I'm driving down field with 2 minutes to go on the road I should feel the intensity and pressure of the moment. Also cleats for lineman should be updated Nike has a couple pair I see almost every lineman with and would love to see under armor cleats for Cam Newton. Gameplay wise I would love to see authentic zone blocking where the lineman actually take there hedge steps. Zone chucking looked good but can be improved I think most people mentioned realistic penalties as well. We need more qb throws as well I would love to be able through back shoulder passes. That would go with db and wr interactions which are non existent I want to be able to fight for the ball in the air as a wr or db . Weight, strength and height needs to feel like it matters during tackling & blocking as well. Also can you bring back DB assignments ? I want my best corner on Megatron every play! Lol. Goaline blocking should look like sundys as well everyone stands right up which i hate instead of making a pile for the hb to jump over. Hurry up offense should have more of a negative impact on teams that don't run hurry up offense the hole game. Players should have more traits to distinguish them properly weather there hidden or not. I believe madden 08 had a great idea with the weapons traits players had. Ccm needs to be more immersive let us sign guys to the practice sqaud who we don't want to go to another team or develop a not ready rookie with potential. Let us Build our own stadiums from scratch, build and draft for an expansion team ie. Madden 2002.. Coaches Scheme's should matter as well, and positively and negatively impact players attributes If I sign a free agent qb the week before a game and start him he should struggle because he hasn't been with the team long enough to learn our playbook this would make us choose our backups wisely and ad to realism. But those are a few of my ideas Rex hope you see this my man. You guys are so close to a truly great game !

Have you seen all the things 2k has added this year??? Its night and day from 2k14 they added modes and gamplay improvements for days my man. I'm playing it all year!!

Of course, but FIFA is released worldwide, Madden, not so much.

It's still all under one roof.

I just wish Madden football would go away. Every year it's the same and EA will never change..

the #1 thing for me is WR/DB interactions

how many years in a row are we going to have to deal with this joke of a system where the WR runs to the spot and waits, while defenders break on the ball and take angles to reach the ball BEFORE it gets there. how about make it so both defenders and receivers will take that approach, so ratings can determine who catches the ball. all the receivers feel the same and all the defenders too. the better wide receivers should be more aggressive and able to position themselves in front of the defender to make the catch instead of standing there and watching the ball into their hands. and all defenders shouldn't be able to make a perfect cut on the ball and high point the ball perfectly everytime. I like how in old maddens sometimes the defenders would actually missplay it, or just miss the ball completely. whens the last time u saw that in madden 15? it was better back in ps2 days when there was less/worse animations because at least you would see variation and you would a chance to complete every throw. now adays you can pretty much tell whether you will complete the pass or not, right when u release it. its terrible.

It is almost impossible to do offline connected franchise as a small market team like the Jaguars, Browns or Raiders. Also, the Vikings new stadium doesn't get built after a season like Levi's did in Madden 25, that is weird.
The ratings need to get overhauled. Tony Romo is in no way better than Nick Foles or Andrew Luck. Gio Bernard is rated lower than a lot of RBs even though he is really one of the best. The ratings just don't match. A player like Alex Smith, Tony Romo or Ben Roethlisberger is rated a whole lot higher than someone like Emmanuel Sanders who is probably a better player overall. Veteran QBs are also overrated. Is Jay Cutler really that much better than Derek Carr? No, he is definitely better, but he isn't as much better as the ratings show him to be. The specific ratings can be better too. When I am developing a young MLB, other than Tackle and Awareness I really don't know what to upgrade, it should tell you on the screen. I know that they can vary by what scheme you use and what kind of MLB you want him to be, but it should still show it. On the topic of development, it is hard to get a young player all the way up to a 99. I did a fantasy draft, based my whole offense around Trent Richardson, used all of his points from the first season to get him up to a normal development, the next year, he rushed for over 1,500 yards and 20 TDs, he won the MVP, but he was still like an 82. After the season he was rated an 86. If a player is that good, they should get some sort of bonus.

1. Presentation - get rid of Simms and Nantz, they don't work for a video game. Nantz sounds too robotic and Simms never shuts up. We don't need the most popular announcers just some really good ones. There is no reason they can't offer two even just one for the regular season and one for the playoffs or special games (Monday/Sunday night etc).

2. Scouting - Either give us a working combine like was in past Madden's or just show us the combine results and throw in some scouting reports. Also rework scouting so there is no way to see ratings until after a player is drafted. Everyone wants realism this would make drafting a lot more realistic and provide more first round busts.

3. Editing - this one should speak for itself. Just give us some editing options for those who don't like the draft classes or the players all having the same equipment.

4. Teambuilder - either give us the option to edit uniforms or give us a teambuilder like website where we can edit to our hearts content. There is no reason I shouldn't at least be able to design my endzones for my team as well as pick my own team colors. You can keep the same team names if you want but let us have some say in "our" team.

5. Draft - I am tired of looking at the same basic screens for sports game drafts. With the processing and graphical power of today's console they can create something unique. At least let me hear the names of the entire 1st round instead of the 1 or 2 guys with storylines.

Penalties.... only 3 or 4 of them work MAKE THEM ALL work!!!!!! I seen clint post on twitter saying we'll ppl get MAD if they lost a game to one WELL IM TIRED of seeing my wr dam near get mugged out on the field and nothings called!!!!! and umm last time I checked!!!!! holding can happen on the defensive side so why is it ONLY called on the oline? and it would be nice if they listed all of them except certain ones.

Player Editing used to be able to edit everything back on the ps2 day's since jump to the next gen consoles we can only edit names, equipment that's it bring back FULL player editing that way we don't have wait around for Donny to do it or not to do it.

Suction blocking/ Warping.... im tired AGAIN of seeing my WR beat a player such as a CB ... only to be suction right back into the cb... which stops my wr... and he has to restart his route all over... and the WARPING needs to be REMOVED... if a players BEAT he's BEAT... look how many times in the REAL nfl players get beat u don't see them gliding across the field and catching up to these guys.

Sliders MAKE THEM work right from the start no having to adjust for play now then readjust them once u put them to your cfm.

get rid of the WHOLE XP system its just dumb that once u put a roster into your cfm players ratings change esp SINCE most everyone dosent change there SCHEME... if u have same coach etc the scheme wont change so why should a players ratings change??? dumbest IDEA ever.

More animations including signature animations is huge. Being able to tell the difference between a scat back and a power back should be a lot better.

Special teams note forgot to mention about actually missing a kick! On all-pro it's difficult to miss and the FGA slider does nothing which brings me to my next point...

Sliders need to be tested and more effective! We have a 100 point scale! I should easily see the difference between 0 and 50 or 50 and 100. That cannot be said currently.

Formation sub menu!! This would be huge for me. It would also be nice if you could set a RB rotation (like 2 drives RB1, next drive RB2) for teams that have closely ranked RBs. Since many teams have RBBCs we should see more of this from everyone.

Overall I do think Madden next-gen is headed in the right direction.

# 40 potsey7 @ 09/30/14 03:43 PM
This game is designed for the head to head online crowd and the tournament players. I figured that out long ago and have only rented Madden on occasion since. I'm not ripping it, they are doing what they feel is economically responsible as a corporation. As a consumer I'm forced to just play text-sims. Its just the world we live in guys. Not enough choices so we have to make the best decision we can based on the options we have. It isn't going to change.
