NBA Live 14 Next Gen First Impressions

After spending eight hours playing NBA Live 14, the best thing I can say about my initial experience is that it's mercifully over.

Professional obligation is all that kept me from turning off NBA Live 14 after experiencing EA Sports' buggy, sub-standard rendition of professional basketball.

Misses

Passing: Despite offering three different control methods for passing, simply moving the ball from player to player is a huge hassle in NBA Live 14. Lengthy throwing and receiving animations make passing a slow and sloppy experience.

Directional aiming often sends to ball to the wrong teammate, with no real difference in accuracy between the left joystick and the right joystick. The additional finger gymnastics of holding down R1 while aiming the right joystick make that method even more impractical.

X button and O button passes take far too long to "charge up" to full power, with the ball coming out slow and floaty even at a full charge.

Icon passing is more accurate and fairly useful when coming out of the backcourt, but it's still far too cumbersome to use during half-court offense, where passing lanes open and close quicker than your fingers can react.

Off-Ball AI: Don't believe the hype behind NBA Live 14's "Synergy DNA." Most of your AI teammates remain stationary on offense unless they're specifically told to move via one of the game's unwieldy d-pad commands.

CPU teams are equally simple-minded, spending most offensive possessions with a star player in isolation while his teammates look on idly.

Broken Overhead Cameras: NBA Live 14 offers two preset, non-customizable cameras for gamers who prefer to play from a top-down, overhead perspective. Both the "Baseline High" and "Baseline Low" cameras stutter constantly, fluctuating between 15-30 frames per second, depending on the arena and the current crowd state. Gamers wanting to play NBA Live 14 at a steady 60 frames per second have no choice but to use one of the side-to-side broadcast cameras.

Buggy Live Moments: The Live Moments feature lets gamers replay top performances from recently completed NBA games. In about half of the challenges I tried, an audio glitch completely muted the crowd noise for the opening minutes of each challenge. The crowd noise would then suddenly return to normal after a few minutes of play. Another, more severe glitch occurred once, where everyone on screen froze as soon as the challenge finished loading. The game then crashed back to the dashboard, giving an error code "CE-34878-0."

Online Latency Issues: Of my five online sessions, four were completely unplayable due to latency. Online games literally look like they're moving in slow-motion, with inputs registering on screen several seconds after a button is pressed. Playing basketball, a sport reliant on timing and technique, is impossible when the lag is this bad. Not even NBA 2K1 ran this poorly on the Sega Dreamcast, and it was communicating with 56K dial-up modems.

Makes

ESPN Presentation: Studio reporter Jalen Rose sets the stage for each game before handing the mic to commentators Jeff Van Gundy and Mike Breen. Van Gundy's blunt, no-nonsense delivery has been captured well, but after only a few hours of game time, it's discouraging to already recognize many repeated lines from Van Gundy and Breen.

NBA Live Mixtape: Of the 30-plus songs already included in NBA Live 14, at least half of them will have your head bumping. The few annoying tracks can be individually switched off. Live's soundtrack should continue to improve over time as more tracks are added throughout the year.

Menus: The different modes and game features are all easy to find thanks to a smart layout and elegant menu design.

It says a lot about the quality of NBA Live 14 that I had such a difficult time just coming up with three "Makes," whereas I easily could have detailed five more "Misses."

After only a few hours of play, it's already evident that NBA Live 14 is not the type of title gamers should rush out and spend $60 on. Keep checking Operation Sports for a full review of NBA Live 14 later this week.

why doesn't sony buy the rights to NBA? just look at mlb the show series, best baseball game ever made by sony. nba- live and nhl are big disappointments from EA.

They did make nba games and quit because they struggled. I want them to come back though and make money off the Xbox crowd also

How did backbreaker make it so that no two plays were ever the same and the outcome was different on every single play? And the players' bodies, etc. contorted so beautifully and physics were actually used to determine outcomes.

Isn't there a way to use motion capture for signature styles AND incorporate real-time physics? For example, if LeBron James is Mo-capped and he is driving to the lane in traffic, isn't there a way for his animation to be interrupted in an infinite number of ways through physics and collision detection and what not in the lane on his way to the basket to make the outcome completely random and determined in real-time based on the calculations of the animations and the physics? Like, if LeBron was hit in a certain area of the body that caused him to try and lay it in from a certain angle at a certain velocity, it would be a miss because of physics, and also a foul. Is there any way to do that? That's the kind of stuff backbreaker was able to do and what I am looking for. There is just zero realism in collision detection and player movement or ball physics and everything is so pre-determined.
You must have played a VERY different game than I did....

Backbreaker was like lifeless limbs with Moon Physics , very unrealistic. Torpedo Tackles, players flopping, I mean honestly yeah tackles were different and it was possible cool (for fun factor) but yeah that game was a Hot Mess.....

All I think is programmers need to program code better for Mo-Cap, nothing worst than being stuck in an animation that you don't need to be in....

Look no matter what or how people try to spin this..NBA LIVE 14 had 4 years to lay a structured game and they failed EVERYONE. Stop with the excuses. They charging folks over 60 bucks to play this crap. Glad I had friends at the store. Ladies and Gents, quit fooling ourselves. NBA Live is a abusive spouse. No more promises. Send them away and let them clean up their act. 60 plus bucks for crap. No sir, this will end like the burning bed one day

2k also had a foundation to build from. and im not making excuses. all im saying is that people are going in with unreal expectations and then get disappointed when theyre not met. that leads to much harsher comments than what is actually deserved.

I think in reality they only have been working on next gen 2 years max

Im pretty sure most people did not have high expectations for this game because of their shaky past. They should have at least applied a better effort then this game, because the game they produced four years ago(NBA Live 10) played a better game of basketball all around then this. My buddy was on twitch the other day talking to Scott O Gallagher and Sean O. Brian, and they basically admitted that this game was a test game, so they could get feedback for their next iterations. To release a game in this state for $60 on the next gen consoles and expect people to trust them or EA again is telling. They had a foundation in NBA Live 10 as well, but they decided to discard it because it belonged to Mike Wang. Im glad they are getting negative reviews with good detail explaining their issues, so they can understand clearly this time around.

They knew what the competition was producing. They consciously released a product they knew wasn't up to par. It's obvious they knew with the w withhold of information. They should have seen this and lowered the price point. But they didn't do that. They started the hype train in an attempt to pull the wool over consumers eyes. The outrage is justified in my opinion.

Yeah well maybe the NBA Live team should have built off the foundation of Live 10. It's so painfully obvious that they have NO clue what to do when it comes to making a basketball game.

I don't care if any of you Live fans label me as trolling, because I was the biggest Live fan ever from 1994 all the way up until about 2000 when 2K came in and showed me what a true basketball sim should be.

Live 05 was the very last time I had fun with a Live game before 10. 10 was awesome, it had it's problems, but it was actually more fun than 2K that year.

The fact that Mike Wang had to leave the EA Sports NBA team because in his words, they didn't want to go into the direction he wanted, tells me all I need to know about EA sports and their practices. Could you imagine where Live would be now if they let Wang have creative freedom?

Give me a break, this game is BAD. Bad isn't even a word to describe it, it's embarrassing for the developers, and the people that shelled out 60 dollars for this game, and the people trying to make excuses for it being good.

MAYBE if everyone wasn't stuck in quicksand, and the response times actually made a lick of sense, this game could get over the 3/10 rating iv'e given it; And the only reason it gets that 3 is because of the presentation. When you have a guy like Tiago Splitter being the focal point of the Spurs offense, 7 strait possessions down the court, where he gets a jump hook over Marc Gasol everytime for a swish, something needs to change.

Teams do NOT play like themselves. It's all the same bull**** from every team in the game. Isolate a random player on the wing, turn around jumper. Bull****. If any of you have ever played NCAA Basketball 10, this SAME exact problem is in that game. HOW?!!?! How does this even happen!? With all this Synergy data EA was talking about, this might be some of the dumbest AI iv'e ever experienced in a game. Flat out trash!

I'm honestly mad at the fact that they really released this game to the public and called it an accurate representation of NBA Basketball. It's a joke over there, and anyone who buys this game fell for it. Hook, line and sinker.

Same feeling I got when I bought Live 07 is what I had playing this. Indefensible for a game on this generation of systems.

I feel your pain man and I certainly do not think you're trolling. I was also a Live 10 lover. I still play to this day and the fact that this next gen game is much worse is sad indeed. In fact I actually forked out Live 08 last night and that even plays better than 14. Someone at EA needs to have a job where they are the person who is hired to play their final product and deem it worthy . They obviously have nobody there who does that. Truthfully they prolly just don't care

Yup. I did also know the dev cycle was under 2 years. Clearly not enough time for EA to get it right. Lol

So glad you point this out this game feel as barebones as that college game my friend(and i only DARE to venture playing the demo!)

For me if it had sliders and roster editing then at least i could fufill my editing appetite witht he game like i did with NBA Live last gen but i cant.
Synergy is not enough of a pull for me i still want the bility to CONTROL MY STUFF.
The excuse of one EAsports quote from one of their commercials - "hey if a players not playing right the "tweet them to player better" rather than having that control be INSTANTANEOUS with roster editing.

I cant begin to tell you i was AMPED for having Live back i got SUPER worried about madden but madden 25 on next gen is real good as is fifa if we are to talk ea's credibility with sports games, but Live doesnt just fall short it falls back to the starting point of NBA LIve 06 on past gen.

Does anyone actually realize that if the game plays and looks like this now(animation wise) there's no way next yr is going to be THAT much better it'd take a transformation of metiord to metriod prime proportions for hat to happen. Which means over 100 ppl. working on it.

I have a question and it wont be answered but it something to consider management wise....

why wasnt there ONE day allocated to player faces and model. Something where the lead producer said...
"OK guys we've got all the players back from the designers and got their faces and bodies and today from 7am to 5pm we are looking at JUST THAT until we can give it back to the designers and have them FIX it....
"

It looks like there was NO such meeting or game strategy or planning of this thats why it looks OFF as well...

The why didnt the lead producer go..."ok guys thurs we spend 7am to 5pm looking at JUST animations in context to the game"

Wouldnt these two things have made the world of difference?
