NBA 2K12 Developer Insight #7 - Creating a Legend - Kobe Rated 94, LeBron 98

Erick Boenisch, Producer for NBA 2K12, back once again.  I’m here today to tell you about a new mode you’ll be playing in the game this year, “NBA: Creating A Legend”.  For this experience, you’ll be taking over the career of any player in the NBA and seeing it through to completion.  In structure and style, this mode resembles My Player in many ways.  If you haven’t got a chance to read my Insight on that mode yet, I recommend you go and give that a read.

The first thing you will do when starting the mode is selecting the player whose career you want to take over.  You can select any player in the league.  If you want to jump right in and dominate, the likes of Kobe, LeBron, and Wade are at your fingertips.  On the other hand, if you are looking for more of a challenge, you can start with a young talent such as a Dexter Pittman or a Daniel Orton and guide them to All-Star appearances, MVPs, and NBA championships.

In NBA: Creating A Legend, you can choose to play as any player in the NBA and play out the rest of their career.  Whose career will you take over?

One of my favorite things about this new mode is that you can take whatever path you want with a player and ultimately change the outcome of his career.  If you want to take a Kobe Bryant and try to match him up with Melo and Amare in New York, go talk to management about a trade and tell them you want to go to New York.  Remember, you aren’t someone who is pulling the strings for Kobe in this mode, YOU are Kobe!

Many of the new additions that we’ve added to My Player this year have found their way into NBA: Creating A Legend, including Contract Negotiations + Spending, the ability to play only Key Games (this gets you through seasons much faster), Player Abilities, Dynamic Goals, all of the new Drills, and much more.  These inclusions are an immediate boost and add instant depth to this new mode.

In NBA: Creating A Legend, you’ll be able to request trades to specific teams (like in My Player).  Your request isn’t a guarantee you’ll end up there, but your GM will do his best to work out a deal with one of those teams.  For you Knick fans out there, this is your chance to bring Kobe into the fold.

My aim and focus with this mode was to provide an experience that even the most casual user with limited playing time could jump right into and enjoy.  At the same, I wanted to provide a feature littered with depth that even our most devoted users would find fulfilling over an extended period of time.  For those of you picking up the game on October 4th, give this hidden gem a shot.  I think you’ll find yourself quickly becoming addicted to what it has to offer.

they need to scale down current ratings of players like lebron. his 98 rating is way to close to jordan's 99 rating. he needs to be knocked down to a 96 so that jordan's dominance can be accurately portrayed. also, **** the heat

The Show and madden need this...fun to start as a rook or created player, but more fun for me to take over a young or old vetrean and see if i can break some records and win some titles with players i already am more familiar with......NBA already had this really, PLAYER LOCK....you can set quarter lengths to taste in this?......

One fun thing to do on NBA2k11 was to load in a VIP(in exhibition only in the pregame option setting, NOT the general VIP that is loaded in at team select screen), turn coach mode on and then assign player lock to a certain position...you can actually coach yourself that way and the camera will stay on your player more...i love screaming at myself when i mess up...errrrr, uhhhhhh...i will bet 99% of NBA2k players do not know this...OR that you can assign a VIP to your own team(as well as the opponent team of course) and actually play along with yourself....i have many team specific VIP's i create so they are more realistic for the teams they represent...if you want to play along with a VIP team memeber(again, in exhibition mode only, not asssociation) , go to option screen and assign a VIP to your own team...NOTE:if you do this, it will NOT record your stats to your 'main' VIP that way..it is confusing, ask me if you need clarification

2k needs to be more clear on some of this

If anything, 2K should bring back the 100 overall rating and have Jordan be rated at 100, cause I think Charles Barkley should be 99 overall if he ever made it into the game. 98 is good for LeBron for now, but to get to 99 he has to accomplish what Jordan did. 98 isn't perfect, since it is not 99 - food for thought.
99 isn't perfect either. You guys put too much stock into overall ratings and forget that isn't the entire picture. 99 doesn't determine that player as being some god tier or the likes, it's how his individual attributes work together. Take a young Shaq/Prime Shaq for example. I can almost guarantee he'll be 93+ but will he have any handle? Can he spot up and shoot the three?
What about his free-throws. I think you get what I'm saying here a player's overall doesn't dictate how good they are at individual things, they can be incredibly Aware (which is a big boost in overall) but barely able to hit a lay-up.

Take overalls with a grain of salt, there's too much "OMFG LEBRON IS 1 AWAY FROM JORDAN WTF BLASPHEMY!!!" in this thread without taking into account the overall factors.

Arguing over OVR ratings is stupid. Lebron in relation to his actual skills should be the best rated player. Now what he is in real life as a total player is completely different. The clutch rating on 2k never affected the OVR anyway. Kobe is my fav player of all time but in reality he isnt the same player he was 2 seasons ago. Its not a bad thing to admit Dwade is slightly better now especially since there is a 5-6 year age gap...

Charles Barkley didn't play defense. No way he should be a 99. Even though overalls don't matter.......Hill Billy

All I have to say is 2K has too many heat fans working for them!!!

# 134 dwillacy24 @ 09/18/11 12:27 AM
This is extremely sad. I thought 2K was all about accuracy, but it seems to me that they're all about being biased. There is no way that LeBron "don't wanna be the man on my own team" James can be a point away from Michael Jordan and 4!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! points ahead of KOBE!!! WADE aint even better than KOBE!!!!! The man was injured last year for cryin out loud. Dag!!!... Way to show some loyalty to a cover athlete.

# 135 dwillacy24 @ 09/18/11 12:35 AM
For all you people out there that think LeBron is better than Kobe you are confusing ATHLETICISM WITH SKILL! LeBron is way more athletic than Kobe but he is NO WHERE NEAR as skilled as Kobe. If 2K goin off of that then Clyde Drexler and Hakeem should be better than LeBron! Especially Dream All LeBron does is dunk try to shoot threes and choke! Stop it 2K stop it....... You can't judge players by their overall ratings. JR Smith was in the 70's and he was a beast.

im going in as mcgee from wizards don't really follow bball but he became my fav player after dunk contest since my favorite player is old (TMAC)

look i don't rly care about kobe or lebron but guys, please stay objective.. kobe is a better shooter/scorer, has better fundamentals than lebron but lebron TODAY is just a better overall player, he is a better rebounder, passer, is quicker, he is may be even a better ball handler, let's not even talk about his athleticism (well i just did).. and most important he is 26 ! he is in his prime and will stay in it for like 4 more years.. accept it or not, kobe's prime is now behind him.

let's say nba teams IRL start next season with an fantasy draft, u really think LA will pick kobe if lebron (or wade or d12 or cp3 or dwill or drose or KD etc etc...) is/(are) available ?

answer : no.
