NBA 2K12 Developer Insight #7 - Creating a Legend - Kobe Rated 94, LeBron 98

Erick Boenisch, Producer for NBA 2K12, back once again.  I’m here today to tell you about a new mode you’ll be playing in the game this year, “NBA: Creating A Legend”.  For this experience, you’ll be taking over the career of any player in the NBA and seeing it through to completion.  In structure and style, this mode resembles My Player in many ways.  If you haven’t got a chance to read my Insight on that mode yet, I recommend you go and give that a read.

The first thing you will do when starting the mode is selecting the player whose career you want to take over.  You can select any player in the league.  If you want to jump right in and dominate, the likes of Kobe, LeBron, and Wade are at your fingertips.  On the other hand, if you are looking for more of a challenge, you can start with a young talent such as a Dexter Pittman or a Daniel Orton and guide them to All-Star appearances, MVPs, and NBA championships.

In NBA: Creating A Legend, you can choose to play as any player in the NBA and play out the rest of their career.  Whose career will you take over?

One of my favorite things about this new mode is that you can take whatever path you want with a player and ultimately change the outcome of his career.  If you want to take a Kobe Bryant and try to match him up with Melo and Amare in New York, go talk to management about a trade and tell them you want to go to New York.  Remember, you aren’t someone who is pulling the strings for Kobe in this mode, YOU are Kobe!

Many of the new additions that we’ve added to My Player this year have found their way into NBA: Creating A Legend, including Contract Negotiations + Spending, the ability to play only Key Games (this gets you through seasons much faster), Player Abilities, Dynamic Goals, all of the new Drills, and much more.  These inclusions are an immediate boost and add instant depth to this new mode.

In NBA: Creating A Legend, you’ll be able to request trades to specific teams (like in My Player).  Your request isn’t a guarantee you’ll end up there, but your GM will do his best to work out a deal with one of those teams.  For you Knick fans out there, this is your chance to bring Kobe into the fold.

My aim and focus with this mode was to provide an experience that even the most casual user with limited playing time could jump right into and enjoy.  At the same, I wanted to provide a feature littered with depth that even our most devoted users would find fulfilling over an extended period of time.  For those of you picking up the game on October 4th, give this hidden gem a shot.  I think you’ll find yourself quickly becoming addicted to what it has to offer.

How did LeBron get a 98 when he should've gotten a 0 in clutch rating?

lol. Yea did you ever hear about the english civil war. The KING was on the CAVALIERS and they LOST. Sound familiar. lol my history teacher said that one day and then she asked "Does anybody know what happened to the king after they lost?" and I swear I almost said. "He got traded to the heat" No but he got executed. ahh just like the finals. lol. yea I don't like Lebron either but I have to admit is he talented. Although, I still think there are a few better players in the league today than him. Like his teammate Wade. Jordan was better as well. As of right now I'd put him and Kobe on the same scale. Kobe is starting to dwindle a bit which is expected at his age. But a few years ago Kobe was clearly better. Lebron has helped to close the gap to though and has improved himself. Overall personally, I think Durant and Wade should be highest rated with Lebron and Kobe right behind them.

80 is a bit harsh for Bosh though he should at least be 84-85 something like that

Hmmm I'll be playing this and MyPlayer the moment I get out of bootcamp .

I'm thinking Tyreke Evans will develop a jumpshot, John Wall will become the vest Point Guard in the NBA (and one of the best players) or DeMar Derozan will turn Toronto into a title contender, James Harden (FEAR THE BEARD) will be a superstar somewhere else (sorry OKC but the Beard must be set free!), Paul George will be the greatest Pacer of all time, and just for good measure I'll tweak Tracy McGrady a little bit and make him about a year or two younger and finish his career strong (championship baby )

Yeah, it's not the most important mode in the game, but I had fun with the Jordan My Player in 2K11 and I think it would be fun to try and take John Wall or Javale McGee and turn them into a true superstar, as I am a Wizards fan.

Don't really see why people are complaining. This mode appeals to more casual gamers, and I love the way 2K goes about getting casual fans as opposed to EA where they try and completely dumb down all the important aspects of the game that the hardcore enjoy.

Yet another reason to applaud 2K! Bring on that Online Insight though! Can't wait! (Bart Scott Voice)

And for the record, I despise LeBron James more than any athlete in the world and whoever said he is one of the best dunkers of all-time is wrong. He's is one of the greatest finishers of all-time, but very generic in his dunking if that makes sense.

With that said, and I HATE saying it, he does deserve the 98 rating. I mean where should he be then if not 98? No lower than 96.. He is the most complete player in the game despite his flaws as a clutch performer.

welp, ill be using this a lot... Jimmer, Kemba, Gerald Henderson, Kobe, LeBron, Durant, Rose, Blake, Dirk, CP3, Dwight...

To all the lebron haters. Yall are funny complaining about his overall rating. You say he doesn't deserve a 98. Well let's see what might got him there(estimate ratings) . Inside and close shots-90 or higher, mid-80-85, 3pt-75, layups/dunking-95 or higher, passing-95 or higher, dribbling-90 or higher, steals-85 or higher, blocks-75 or higher, rebounding-80 or higher, def awareness -90 or higher, off awareness-95 or higher, speed-90 or higher, quickness-90 or higher. OK I'm done proving my point so I don't think I have to list anymore ratings to show you that lebron does deserve a 98. The man is a beast stop the hate

Even better than McGrady..alot of you probably dont remember just how good Grant Hill was in the late 90s before he got hurt. People in the small NBA circles were comparing his drive & talent to His Airness #23. Dont believe me, just got watch some of his Pistons youtube clips....

I wish they would have done the ratings on an all time scale (maybe they believe they did) with Jordan being a 99, the likes of Magic and Bird 98s, and the top current players falling in the low 90s category. To call LeBron a 98 is kind of disrespectful to some of the greats who had far superior skills. Would rather have the current elite players -- Paul, Williams, Wade, Durant, LeBron, Rose, and Kobe (In close to that order) -- see ratings in the 90-93 range.

never really had a problem with 2k ratings. i can't think of anyone (off the top of my head) from 2k that was either overrated or underrated. As far as I'm concerned any superstar or star in the game played quite true to himself as long as their team played appropriately. My only concern with 2k ratings is when players are pulling of dunks that they wouldn't or can't do in real life (some pg i've never seen dunk in real life can throw it down in the game).

As for the Create a Legend game mode I like the idea. Pretty much what everyone expected, my player with a current player, which could be a lot of fun with some younger players or players who's career aren't already HOF status. And I am sure everyone has a couple favorite players that they would want to take control of and determine the fate of their career. I don't know how much play time the mode will get out of me but it is definitely a nice option to have. IMO the more game modes the better.

Even if he got a 0 in clutch (rating floor is 25 btw) it wouldn't affect his overall that much. He would still be the highest rated player on the game.

You all and this overall rating talk is really frustrating.

I will have to try this mode out maybe with Tyler Hansbrough or Goran Dragic.

Deron Williams is the best PG in the league, yeah we know Derrick Rose won the MVP, but I think it was because he was on a better team (the Bulls). Both should be rated the same.
I think Deron Williams and Chris Paul edge out Rose (overall better and more efficient players). Also Curry and Nash beat out Westbrook. Again just more efficient which you need out of the PG.

You can't tell me that he isn't one of the best dunkers that stepped foot onto a court.
You're right I can't tell you that because he is not and it's not even close. He's the most basic of dunkers, I've ever seen. If he's one of the best then Shaq is too........picture that.
Oh and I dont see how he's should be rated anywhere near the Jordan/Birds/and Magic's of the game. Thats tomfoolery.

hey im guessing you can use anybody and when i say anybody means everyone thats in the game ! if you wanna use the young afro kobe or penny just trade them to current teams that you want them on ! when 2k11 came out i always put in the old school legends in current teams to see how it would be in association mode... im hopeing you could still trade the old school legends in 2k12 once you unlock them..

Winning dunk contests doesn't mean you're the best dunker.

We saw this in February when Derozan got robbed.
