NBA 2K12 Developer Insight #7 - Creating a Legend - Kobe Rated 94, LeBron 98

Erick Boenisch, Producer for NBA 2K12, back once again.  I’m here today to tell you about a new mode you’ll be playing in the game this year, “NBA: Creating A Legend”.  For this experience, you’ll be taking over the career of any player in the NBA and seeing it through to completion.  In structure and style, this mode resembles My Player in many ways.  If you haven’t got a chance to read my Insight on that mode yet, I recommend you go and give that a read.

The first thing you will do when starting the mode is selecting the player whose career you want to take over.  You can select any player in the league.  If you want to jump right in and dominate, the likes of Kobe, LeBron, and Wade are at your fingertips.  On the other hand, if you are looking for more of a challenge, you can start with a young talent such as a Dexter Pittman or a Daniel Orton and guide them to All-Star appearances, MVPs, and NBA championships.

In NBA: Creating A Legend, you can choose to play as any player in the NBA and play out the rest of their career.  Whose career will you take over?

One of my favorite things about this new mode is that you can take whatever path you want with a player and ultimately change the outcome of his career.  If you want to take a Kobe Bryant and try to match him up with Melo and Amare in New York, go talk to management about a trade and tell them you want to go to New York.  Remember, you aren’t someone who is pulling the strings for Kobe in this mode, YOU are Kobe!

Many of the new additions that we’ve added to My Player this year have found their way into NBA: Creating A Legend, including Contract Negotiations + Spending, the ability to play only Key Games (this gets you through seasons much faster), Player Abilities, Dynamic Goals, all of the new Drills, and much more.  These inclusions are an immediate boost and add instant depth to this new mode.

In NBA: Creating A Legend, you’ll be able to request trades to specific teams (like in My Player).  Your request isn’t a guarantee you’ll end up there, but your GM will do his best to work out a deal with one of those teams.  For you Knick fans out there, this is your chance to bring Kobe into the fold.

My aim and focus with this mode was to provide an experience that even the most casual user with limited playing time could jump right into and enjoy.  At the same, I wanted to provide a feature littered with depth that even our most devoted users would find fulfilling over an extended period of time.  For those of you picking up the game on October 4th, give this hidden gem a shot.  I think you’ll find yourself quickly becoming addicted to what it has to offer.

So yes, it should be Lebron > Wade > Kobe.
Some common sense over here...

So yes, it should be Lebron > Wade > Kobe.
If that's the case, then Durant is probably rated a 97 then

That's a good point. I think the appeal may be in being able to rewrite someone's future. I didn't like the mode when it was first announced as it seemed to serve the same purpose as Association mode but I think it does have a lot of fun potential.

Only difference last yr was Kobe's mins were down, so his PPG weren't as big, but his efficiency didn't drop.

Mins down were due to injuries....he didn't practice all yr long and still 5th in PER. lol

that's why he went to Germany and got treatment, he will be back to shut the dumb doubters once again, like he did many times in his career.
So what's your point? If you want to base ratings on PER than you're arguing that Kobe was overrated in the game the last 2 years.

Very cool in that if you take over someone like say Lebrons career, you are not starting as a rookie. It wasn't like that last year. Cool little mode that i will be playing.

my point is he hasn't slow down as much as people think.

his efficiency hasn't drop, just his mins.....

so people who don't watch Lakers games only listen to what media says actually think he lost a huge step.....

i never say ratings should base on PER, but if his efficiency are just as good as seasons before then that means he shouldn't drop that much in ratings.

I hope you can change the players age and start their career over again. Would love to re-write history with t-mac

OVERALL, Lebron is better as a pure basketball player than Durant, and his OVERALL RATING should reflect that.

Some dudes just don't understand the correlation between Overall and Overall Rating. As if the key word "Overall" wasn't enough .
Just don't like the fact that Lebron is a 98, just one point below MJ. I see what you're saying, but still.

I don't know about you guys but I'm hyped for this.

I never really liked MyPlayer that much because creating a 5'9 PG in a PG dominated league isn't fun for me. Nor is creating myself+ 6 inches. I much rather go through the mode as a rookie that was drafted and see if I can make them live up past the hype and turn them into a superstar.

Whats up with everyone griping about ratings. As long as the player plays like themselves it shouldn't matter. 2K has done a great job in this department for the last few years, I see no reason to doubt them this go around. And you know what, if you dont like the rating someone has, change it when you get the game.(Its your game to do what you want)

And for all those complaining about LeBron being rated higher than Kobe......they play different positions. Change LeBron to a shooting guard and those ratings may be a little closer but I still think LeBron gets the edge. The ratings are composed of attributes which is what I dont believe people understand.

Ok.......

Rant over

I'm feeling this mode. Never been the type of gamer that wanted to create himself. "My Player/Team Up" online is cool but it is so hard to find a group of sim players and play selection/ CPU AI was so annoying that I lost interested in these modes. I love the player lock controller and the team aspect of fulfilling a role so this mode is alright with me.

I plan on using Terrico White. Grew up with him in the neighborhood of Raleigh in North Memphis. Went to the same high school and he played with my younger brothers coming up through community leagues and AAU. A stud at Ole Miss but has be battling injuries in his early years with the Detroit Pistons. Definitely has the potential to be an elite player in the new era of NBA basketball (pg dominant). Comparison of a young Dwanye Wade.

Also thinking about Creating A Legend with:

1. Elliot Williams of the Trailblazers
2. Thaddeus Young of the 76ers
3. (Hopefully)Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway

I hope they added a feature for My Player/Creating a Legend where you will be able to have more of a say in the structure of your team once you gain influence. For example in 2k11 you could pick a couple of players you wanted on your team but didn't have a say in what to do with you current teammates. For example if I choose Omer Asik as my player I want to be able to tell the Bulls to move Noah to the PF position and trade Boozer, etc.

i agree that would be awesome...like say u got to the level of "the man" on your team so management would talk to you about the direction of the franchise and listen to your suggestions on free agents you would like for them to go after or trades you can suggest

just for a reminder, here is what Kobe and Lebron been doing in this offseason.

Lebron

I can agree

but it also still does not negate the fact that last year was an off year so he should not be higher rated than dudes who put up the numbers.

its like Chris Paul...2k11 he wasnt even a 95 in speed... just let the truth be reflected

Kobe is still the best but its more mental than physical at this point... game should reflect it imo

Agreed, never was a great dunker

Create a Legend mode sounds awesome.

I'm going to try to average 20 & 10 with Kwame Brown

When he was younger he was above average, but wasn't up there with the vince carters, Lebron james, etc..

# 40 RajonRondo9Celtics @ 09/14/11 02:46 PM
i'll probably go with Rondo and keep the celtics going strong (along with developing a jumper).

Other options (not in order)

Kevin Durant (imagine the KD Vs. LBJ rivalry in the Finals!)
Bill Russell (Play with Bill Russell in modern times)
Blake Griffin
