Dynasty League Baseball Online Overview

Sometimes a media experience encourages you to seek out other versions of that specific title. For instance, I powered through the J.R.R. Tolkien novels after seeing the first Lord of the Rings movie. A hit single might entice you to buy the whole album. Even a sports video game might turn you on towards the real-life version of that sport.

So, in just about all cases, this is a good sign: your first experience is a positive one, so you seek out more like it. Dynasty League Baseball Online is a perfect example of this phenomenon.

New and Online

Dynasty League Baseball Online is a new online baseball text-sim, currently in beta, that allows you to re-create single games, series and leagues (eventually) featuring your favorite historical teams. Each team’s performance is based on real-life stats, meaning you’ll get a remarkably accurate and realistic experience each time you log on.

Currently, you are able to play single games and three-, five- and seven-game series against the AI. During gameplay, dice rolls are simulated, their results shown on-screen -- a nice touch -- and the ensuing play is calculated and applied to the situation. It is a relatively smooth and straight-forward process, but you’ll probably want to brush up on the rules of Dynasty League Baseball. To help, a .PDF rulebook is available.

If you are familiar with other baseball text-sims, there are a few tweaks that set Dynasty League apart. First, just about every element of the game is factored into the calculations, including weather, stadium and umpires -- in addition to the standard player statistics. These details show the game's tabletop roots, and I like that these are all shown during gameplay. Too many games, in my opinion, gloss over the die rolls and just assume that you only care about play-by-play. Dynasty League does allow you to adjust how much data you’ll see, so if you do only want to see results, that can be arranged.

Throughout the game, player cards, pie charts and outcome percentages help you manage all of that data. Also unique to this game are coaching decisions, including the odds of success and possible outcomes. These help break up the data-driven play and offer moments of pure strategy.

A few other elements help streamline the experience, but ultimately may frustrate some baseball purists. You only get one chance to steal per at-bat; if your runner is held, you’ve missed your opportunity. There’s no option to manage each pitch, and the process of warming up pitchers without them getting too tired seems unintuitive. Again, this game is based on a pre-existing rule set, so these issues are not exclusive to the online game. However, they probably won’t bother most users looking for a quick and accurate baseball simulation.

I Love the '90s...and Baseball Stadiums

Outside of beautiful stadium pictures that serve as a "playmat," this game is not that pretty to look at. Its layout and graphical flair favors the functional, and the whole page sort of screams 1990s. I don’t think this is a huge issue, but don’t expect an EA level of slick polish. To date, the developers have patched some things to help make it a more appealing experience, so it’s safe to assume a certain amount of continued development. Still, I'll restate that I really like the backgrounds, which are large high-quality images of the home team's ballpark.

Live Tourneys

The most interesting way to play, for now, is not against the computer, but against other humans in the tournament setting. These run daily, and feature a single-elimination format. Some elements, like a closable chat window and CPU takeover for dropouts, make this online experience a pleasant one. The only issue I have with playing another person is that the games can take a lot longer because every action requires confirmation. Add in the fact that if you advance, you may need to wait for other games to finish, and you have a multi-hour experience. A fun experience, especially if you are winning, but a long one for sure.

Final Thoughts

At this point, some features have yet to be implemented, such as leagues and playing another individual in a single game. However, new stuff is being added just about every week. There is a large selection of teams, but don’t expect every team from every year to be there. Also, there is a nice "user score" and ranking system that tracks your progress.

So, if you’ve played other baseball text-sims or board games, especially Dynasty League Baseball, you will definitely want to extend your experience with this online version. It’s free while in beta, so there’s nothing to lose.

This was a great game with the dice and so nice to see it on-line now. Mike C and the crew have hit a home run!

Eventually you will be able to have a franchise. Right now it is basically set up for Greatest team tournaments (they have a number of them each day that you can sign up for). Or you can play solo against the computer anytime you like

I signed up during the series...took the Rangers and was beat by SF in 6. I really enjoyed this game.....but the final $ tag is a bit high for 6 months. If it was a one time price..maybe I could see this, but can see myself paying this much.

Other than that....this is the best I have played...and I think I have played them all.

No leagues yet? I fail to see how this even compares to OOTP, which is so customizable that you can create pretty much any league you can imagine, or simply jump right in and play the 2010 MLB season.

One very important feature not emphasized in the Overview is that DYNASTY League Baseball Online is the first and only Baseball simulation that allows you to play in multi-player bracket tournaments and leagues that have brackets, stats and standings updated in real time. This is only possible because the game runs entirely in your Internet Explorer, Firefox or Safari (Apple Mac) browser.

It totally eliminates having to export and import files which now seems totally "stone age" kind of stuff. It also makes connecting with an opponent amazingly easy. There are no IP addresses, firewall settings or third party software to deal with you just click the" join" button.

Multi-player Greatest Team bracket tournaments are currently available and are a must to try out for the sheer thrill of the experience.

Greatest Teams leagues are coming later this fall and continuous Draft leagues will be available Spring of 2011 with live draft rooms.

I just tried connecting from work during my lunch break, and it seems to timeout at the "Connecting to Game Server" screen, which I can only imagine is a Corporate firewall issue.

Shame, because I could really see myself playing a few games at lunch, but doubt it will get much time when I'm at home.

The price tag for this is....well, yikes. No thanks.

If you can't get through a corporate firewall, you can email [email protected] if you would like the port number so that you can ask your local IT department to open the port.

To me, the price is somewhat reasonable. Keep in mind, you get their whole library of seasons to use. Normally, in these types of ventures, they charge $19-$29 to own a single season.

This model really works well for me. I like playing tournaments/games from a lot of different seasons, but probably don't get enough value out of buying one single season. Now I can pick and choose what I want to play.

But as I mentioned earlier, the firewall issue is a bummer. I really have no other internet type issues like this at work either.

Thanks for the offer Mike, but unfortunately I don't think I can e-mail my IT department with a "Hey, can you open up a port so I can play a game at work" type e-mail.

As I mentioned earlier, I really don't have any issues with any other internet apps at work. I wonder why I'm having problems with this.

Make sure you have the Microsoft Silverlight browser plug-in installed. You can also try a different browser. There is a small chance there might be an issue with a missing player rating in one of the teams you selected in "Series". You can delete the "Series" you created and then try two different teams. If none of that works, then yes it looks like the corporate firewall is blocking the game server port and it needs to be opened.

I just upgraded the Silverlight plugin, restarted my browser, changed to the current WS teams, and tried to re-start without success.

Looks like a great product, best of luck guys.

One other idea especially for "lunch" if you have a notebook, would be to play at one of the public wifi places like Panera Bread, Barnes and Noble, Starbucks or Whole Foods. I have played DYNASTY League Baseball Online a lot in those places and it worked perfectly. The only place I could not connect was at the public library.

Still....for those of us who like to build a dynasty, vs just play in tournaments or 1 season, the price tag is just too high. Like I said, if the $60 was a one time fee...maybe, just maybe I could see this.

I just don't think with this price tag it will appeal to the masses. Even, if you do play a season, not many people play out every game, and I bet most die hard fans can get thur a season in less than a month. The tournaments are good...but for long term plus price...I can't see how someone is gonna put out $14 a month.

Don't get me wrong...the game is just great. I only wish OOTP had some of the tools that this one has. I could see myself playing this for many many years.

The ground breaking focus of DYNASTY League Baseball Online is the multi-player league play. Only in DYNASTY League Baseball Online can you play in a multi-player Greatest Team league or continous Draft league and have stats, standings and leaders updated in real time and have the ability to either play the game out live via a live opponent or sim the game with the computer manager. You can join a Public league or create a Private league with your own friends so it is quite a bit like Fantasy Baseball except instead of accumulating points you actually play out the games live vs. each other. We finished our first pilot test league this past year and the league experience was totally amazing.

Getting to play "Series" solitaire at anytime with the complete DYNASTY League Baseball Library of seasons and also play in the multi-player Greatest Team bracket tournaments just adds that much more value to what you are getting.

DYNASTY League Baseball Online is also not static. Every week if not every day new features are being added and you are the first one to get any new season releases. You never have to install, download or pay for updates, upgrades or fixes it is all done for you automatically on the server side.

You can't really compare DYNASTY League Baseball Online to anything else because there is nothing else like it.

The issue is the Microsoft Silverlight Technology. It is limited by Microsoft to specific ports, and unfortunately a lot of IT departments blanket-block any port except for port 80.

There is almost no risk to opening the outbound ports required for Dynasty League Baseball Online to work, but you do have to convince your IT department to do so, which obviously might not be an easy thing to do depending on where you work.

An update last night temporarily broke new user registration, but it is back up and running now. Sorry you ran into trouble.
