Joel Pineiro Tossed a 3 hit shutout vs. the Rays
Coming in to tonights game with the Tampa Bay Rays Joel Pineiro was scuffling. Pineiro had an 0-2 record and an ERA well over 6.00. The Rays Matt Garza was on the other end of the spectrum. Garza was sporting a 5-0 record and an ERA under 3.00. Tonight those roles were reveresed. Pineiro pitched a complete game 3 hit shutout and Garza was roughed up for 6 runs in just 4 1/3 innings of work.
The Angels jumped on Garza early and often, before the Rays pen could stop the bleeding in the 5th inning. By that time it was too late, the Angels were up 6-0 and Pineiro was looking unhittable. Brandon Wood was particularly effective against Garza. Wood hit a pair of RBI doubles one off the left centerfield wall and one off the right centerfield wall of Garza.
Wood, continued his torrid pace since coming off the DL, raising his average to .400 in the 2 weeks he's been back. Juan Rivera also extended his hit streak to a ML best 21 games.
These two teams face off again tomorrow night with Ervin Santana (3-1, 3.89) facing off against young fireballer David Price (2-0, 5.29)

Adam Everett's RBI Single in the bottom of the 3rd broke up a 1-1 tie and put the Tigers ahead for good, as they defeated the Angels 3-1 to open a 3 game set in Detroit. Gerald Laird added a home run (his third of the season) for good measure.
The game had been a pitching duel, with Jeremy Bonderman throwing 6 strong innings only giving up 1 run, while the Halos Joel Pineiro matched him pitch for pitch until the 7th inning.
These two teams meet again tomorrow when Ervin Santana (2-1, 4.07) faces off against Armando Galarraga (1-1, 6.63)
Injury Update
The Angels placed 2B Howie Kendrick and Reggie Willits on the 15 day DL. Willits fractured his arm and Kendrick broke his hand. Both are expected to be out for 4-8 weeks. The Angels recalled OF Chris Pettit and IF Robb Quinlan to take up their roster spots.

Brandon Wood's solo home run in the 2nd inning off of Yankee starter AJ Burnett would prove to be all the offense the Angels would need to win. The 1-0 win was the Angels first win over New York in 6 tries, and helped them avoid a sweep at home to the Yanks. Wood who just came off the DL after spraining his knee in the first game of the season picked the perfect time to hit his first home run of the season.
Ervin Santana a noted Yankee killer was brilliant in the win. Santana pitched 7 1/3 shutout innings in earning his 2nd win of the season. Brian Fuentes earned his 6th save of the season by pitching a perfect ninth inning.
The Angels next host the Cleveland Indians (10-8) for a 3 game set. Jered Weaver (3-0, 1.57) will face Anthony Reyes (1-0, 5.17) in tomorrow nights series opener.

Robinson Cano's RBI double in the top of the 8th broke a 7-7 tie and gave the Yankees an 8-7 win over the host Angels. The Yankees are now 5-0 against the Angels on the year, and despite just about every game going down to the wire, the Yankees continue to find a way to win.

Scot Shields record drops to 0-1 on the season. Kendry Morales hit his 3rd home run of the season in the loss, and added 3 more RBI to improve his season total to 18.
The Yankees go for the sweep tomorrow afternoon in Anaheim. Ervin Santana (1-1, 5.82) takes the hill for the Angels, while A.J. Burnett (1-1, 4.58) will get the nod for the Yanks. The game is a 1:05 (PST) afternoon game.

In an effort to improve their play at third base the Angels have acquired Josh Fields from the Kansas City Royals. The Angels sent minor league infielder Freddy Sandoval to the Royals.
In limited time with the Angels Sandoval hit .286 with 0 home runs and 4 RBI.
Fields was off to a slow start with the Royals and had lost his starting job to Alberto Callaspo. Fields was hitting just .172 with 0 home run and 2 RBI.
Fields is expected to start at 3B and may get some time at either corner outfield position once Brandon Wood returns from the DL. This move also seems to signify the Angels don't have a lot of confidence in Wood becoming a major contributor as an every day third basemen.
Angel GM Brian Krich was quoted as saying, "Josh Fields is a guy we've liked for some time. We feel he can come in and give us some punch from the third base position. His ability to play either corner outfield spot gives us some versatility as well".
The move also gives the Angels some options with Bobby Abreu expected to be out for 2 months. Reggie Willits who's filling in for Abreu has struggled at the plate.
