Kotaku had an interesting article from a GamesIndustry report about recent comments from Codemasters CEO Rod Cousens:

Quote:
"It's not inconceivable to say that we send out a Formula One game that's not complete - maybe it's got six tracks", Cousens told GI.biz. "Then they have to buy their next track, and you follow it around the world. When you turn up in Abu Dhabi you have to pay for the circuit, and whatever the changes are to the cars that are put through. That, I think, would deal with a lot of it, and also address the pre-owned."

It would also piss off a lot of consumers who couldn't be bothered shelling out for content over the course of an F1 season. He seems to have left that bit out.
I think Kotaku has this one a bit more right than Cousens. If Codemasters seriously considers a model like this, it'd be a bigger disaster than the White Star Line declaring the Titanic to be unsinkable as the ship was already on its way to the bottom of the ocean.

Let's just chalk this up to Cousens having a bad day and hope we don't see racing titles with just half of their content hitting store shelves anytime soon. Would you buy a game with just half the content it'd otherwise have?

Looks like Kinect sales are very strong thus far.

Quote:
A little more than ten days after launch, Microsoft's Kinect has sold one million units.
The peripheral arrived at the million units milestone a week ahead of Black Friday, and is expected to sell 5 million units by the end of the year, Microsoft announced today. The projections were raised from 3 million before the Kinect's launch.

To put that number in perspective, there are approximately 32 million 360 consoles which have been sold thus far. Five Million would be approximately a 15% of all XBox 360s sold having a Kinect -- and that's just in a couple of months.

If this trend continues Motion Controls are coming to popular sports titles near you very soon, could we already know the focus of the feature lists in the 2011 Sports Gaming lineup?

The Sporting News has a story up about NASCAR's new plan to abandon exclusive agreements in favor of signing deals with several developers instead:

Quote:
When Electronic Arts and NASCAR decided to end their 12-year, exclusive partnership last year, the sanctioning body went back to the drawing board to hash out a new strategy for its gaming business.

The resulting strategy will see NASCAR eschew the traditional plan of signing an exclusive deal with a publisher such as EA in favor of signing a multitude of deals with a number of developers who will design games across a variety of platforms.

It has signed three deals to implement its strategy. Its new roster of gaming partners includes iRacing, which developed an online simulation game; Sony, which will feature NASCAR for the first time in the popular racing game Grand Turismo; and Eutechnyx, a video game developer from Great Britain that created a new NASCAR game slated for release by Activision in February. NASCAR hopes to build on those relationships by adding other agreements with developers that can create games for iPads and iPhones, Facebook and other platforms.

It seems to be a positive direction at least for NASCAR. As to whether this will ever spill over into other sports leagues, I'm not sure what the odds of that are at this point. Next up in the license free agent market is Baseball, so we will know more in the next year or so if exclusivity is something which is ending as quickly as it began or not.

Baseball fans are no doubt trying to figure out if Roy Halladay being on the cover of MLB 2K11 means anything -- anything at all in regards to this year's game.

While EA oftentimes goes with a thematic coverboy of some kind (remember Ray Lewis and the year of the defense in Madden 2005?), 2K hasn't totally gone with the thematic cover boy route -- in fact it's pretty rare for them to do just that.

So is there any hidden message in 2K Sports selection of Halladay as the coverman?

Perhaps 2K is just honoring what was the year in which the pitcher saw a huge resurgence back to prominence. For the last 20 years plus, we've had a game dominated by the fascination with the long ball. Things changed somewhat in 2010, and I think if anything 2K might be going that route of following the fans and their newfound fascination with pitchers.

It's good marketing after all.

However, the release contained no hints and with 2K already having a recently overhauled pitching system, I doubt they overhaul it again. So look for the coverman to be more symbolic rather than being a hint of things to come this year from MLB 2K11.

Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick was on the warpath about the video games business recently in an interview with Joystiq. In said interview, Kotick took a not so subtle jab at the practice of issuing online passes, which we all know EA and THQ are both quite guilty of:

Quote:
"What we've tried to do is to really support our audiences and, you know, when you talk to players, they like the idea of having a currency. They like the idea of being able to take a game they no longer want to play and use it to get a credit to buy new games." We can't argue with that, and doubt EA would either, but it's a simple matter of economics: Retailers are cutting the game companies out of that second-hand sale. "We can do some of these things that EA and others have done," Kotick said. "We actually don't think its in the best interest of the gamer, and so we've chosen not to."

Instead, Activision's made some serious profits off of downloadable map packs for its Call of Duty titles. "From a financial perspective you look at it and say, 'Okay, well the retailer is not paying us anything for the privilege of doing it and you know we invest all this capital in making a game and we are not getting any credit, any return on their resale of the game,' but, you know something, the best way to keep people engaged in your game experience is keep giving them more great content."
I know, I know, it's kind of a lost art to provide content gamers want to buy in order to make money in the games business -- but I kind of dig this Bobby Kotick and his 'fresh and new' take on the gaming business.

No matter how old school it really is.

In the section filed under, "news you didn't see coming category," THQ boss Brian Farrel declared triumphantly to CNBC that video game prices are just too darned high at $60.

Quote:
Brian Farrell, however, is taking a stance that runs counter to some of his peers, with plans to launch the next installment of one of the company’s oldest franchises at just 2/3 of the going price for new software.

“MX vs. ATV” will cost $40 instead of $60 when it comes out next year. Farrell’s betting that increasing consumer interest in digitally downloaded content will make up the difference—and maybe even result in higher markings.

“I know investors worry about price points,” he says. “When we think about this business, we wonder if we can turn it on its head a bit. How many users can we capture? … The real key is expanding in the installed base.”
This is an interesting development considering THQ is a major developer of sports games like UFC Undisputed and WWE Smackdown vs. Raw. Could we see a sort of watershed moment coming here where games are cheaper, just you have to pay to get all the features possible?

I'm not sure if I like that option, but it might come to pass from THQ at least.

With Fight Night Champion being the first M-rated game from EA Sports in a long time (see: ever), it seems the ongoing Supreme Court battle about whether to allow a law from California to ban the sale of violent video games to minors is a bit more important to at least some of our visitors now. Here's a primer on what Americans think from Rasmussen:

Quote:
A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 54% of Americans believe violent video games lead to more violence in society, a number which has held steady since April. Still, 32% think violent video games have no direct correlation to violence in society, while 14% are not sure. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

Sixty-nine percent (69%) of Americans say they are at least somewhat concerned about the level of violence seen in many video games today, including 48% who are Very Concerned. But 29% say they are not concerned about the violence level, with 13% who are Not At All Concerned.

Not surprisingly, older adults are more concerned about violent video games than younger adults. But, interestingly, adults with children at home are less concerned about the violence level than adults without children living with them.

The question really becomes, if the California law is struck down: what effect (if any) would it have on sales and would game developers be more apt to tone down games in order to increase sales? Initially, the answer is none.

Later on if more and more states take up a similar measure, we might see some developers start shying away from M-rated games.

Trying to take a stab at the 50 greatest video game athletes ever and ordering them is a tough process where many differences in opinion certainly arise among people putting the lists together as well as the people reading them. OS recentely worked very closely with Complex.com to help put together a list of the 50 Greatest Video Game Athletes ever.

Quote:
In case you haven't walked by a Gamestop yet and seen the lines, today is NBA Elite 11 and NBA 2K11 Day (which isn't a federal holiday yet, but with any luck our petition will be heard)! More anticipated at this point than possibly even the annual update of Madden NFL, the game promises to answer the question, "what if Michael Jordan was around today?" There's no question that His Airness is on the shortlist of Greatest of All Time, but does that dominance extend to video games? Over the past three decades, sports games have seen champions both expected (Ken Griffey Jr.) and unexpected (Thomas Johansson), both one-shot and perennial. But who's the greatest? We got together with the sports gaming authorities at Operation Sports to find out. Hit that juke button!

If you didn't read my thoughts on NBA Elite 11's demo, be sure to check those out now. No need to re-hash what I said there.

What I'd like to do instead is to play some blame game as to who is to blame for what might be one of the biggest disaster releases from a major gaming company in quite some time.

Because somehow, somewhere, someone is to blame for what accounts to the worst basketball title on the market in this generation of consoles. Sony's NBA game outclasses Elite 11, and I'm sure I can name several games over the past decade on far inferior hardware that outclass Elite's gameplay, some completely and laughably dominate Elite.

I wrote about Elite earlier this year, I thought the name change signaled that EA had hit the panic button. Now that we've played Elite and saw the entire Live series was blown up, I think it's safe to say EA definitely panicked.

2K Sports made one of the more interesting decisions this past offseason by shelving the 360 and PS3 versions of their NHL series but also keeping the Wii version on the release schedule. While there has not been any official confirmation, Take Two CEO Ben Feder has indicated that NHL 2K12 will find its way to the 360 and PS3.

But for now, 2K hockey fans have NHL 2K11 on the Wii.

NHL 2K11 attempts to improve the controls and the overall experience of last year's Wii version. The game features a plethora of modes, although veterans of the series will instantly recognize most of the offerings here. While the game is far from good, it does offer the only attempt at a "true" hockey simulation experience on the Wii and might satisfy some puckheads who do not have access to a 360 or a PS3.

You may recall the news story last week from CNBC which declaratively stated that Madden sales were weak this year. The evidence used was early price drops from retailers and weak pre-orders for the title. Not the most concrete evidence for sure, but far from the worst you could use.

But with that in mind, we can start to frame some real non-biased ideas on where Madden and NCAA's sales really are right now. So with that said, let's take a look at the best evidence we have and figure out where both Madden and NCAA are when it comes to sales.

The question I keep asking myself is whether Gameflow and the Game Planning features are a revolution in Madden NFL 11 or just another gimmick which is sure to go by the wayside in future years not unlike Weapons, the Vision Cone, and any number of other features.

It's not like we haven't been given a bevy of reasons to believe Gameflow isn't indeed another gimmick.

How the success from NCAA to Madden got lost in translation I don't know. But we now know NCAA is the best playing football game ever with Madden trailing it in just about every category on the gameplay front, albeit slightly. Madden is still fun to play on the field, and if you don't own Madden NFL 10 and if you are an NFL fan, this is a no brainer of a purchase. Madden NFL 11 is the best Madden yet on next-gen consoles, which is how it should be. However, if you are a casual football fan then NCAA is the best option for you -- unless you hate the college game. Madden is solid, above average, and definitely not a bad game. It's just not great, and people expect nothing less.
