Sports games progress like every other genre, and idea copying becomes a huge part of the development process. However, some ideas seem to get looked over by some development teams. Given the current state of the industry, what is the most important feature that has not yet made its way into most sports games?

Chris Sanner: The one thing all sports games need that none actually do involves dynamic player personalities.

Robert Kollars:
There are a lot of features that should be absolutely standard in all sports games, but a complete editor tops the list for me.

Caley Roark: For me, the missing thing that frustrates me most is TV-style presentation, at least for major sports games.

Take-Two has to be happy that NBA 2K11 was still among the top 10 sellers in the video game industry in May. However, the rest of the industry isn't as physical game sales dipped to a five year low. While NBA 2K11 is selling well, it's rare to see it so high late in the year, which could easily be attributed to a weak field overall past the top few sellers. Given the low overall industry sales, a slowing economy and still high development costs -- one wonders how long the industry in its current form can last. The light sales can be attributed to the light release schedule in May, but the fact people aren't buying games more than a few weeks after their release should be a giant wake up call to publishers.

As expected Nintendo announced today at their E3 press conference a new console that looks to be trying to redefine the gaming experience in the living room once again.

The console features a new controller (pic below) that contains a 6" LCD touch screen and can function as a standalone display for the console if need be (or can function in any number of other ways such as drawing plays on the fly in Madden perhaps). The controller will also feature an inward facing camera, which will allow for video chat, perhaps even in-game.

The Wii U will be backwards compatible, able to play all Wii games as well as the console's new games. John Riccitiello took the stage at the Nintendo Press Conference, signaling to many that EA will be working closely with Nintendo to develop meaningful apps for their new console.

The Wii U video shown at the press conference briefly showed clips of a version of DiRT for Nintendo's new console.

What do you think? Does Nintendo have your attention with this new console? What do you think about the new controller? Let us know!

EA is currently working through their E3 Press Conference. We will post any news and notes from the conference from various sources as we get them.

As an aside, our E3 crew is currently getting in position to cover the event. Be sure to follow Chase Becotte, Christian Mcleod, and TD St. Matthew-Daniel on their Twitter pages to keep up to date with live thoughts from the show floor. We will also be providing updates and previews from the show right here on the OS Frontpage through the week.

-SSX Trailer, not bad.

-SSX has three modes: Race It, Trick It and Survive It.

-FIFA 12 described by Moore as 'pre-Alpha' but best playing FIFA ever already.

-EA Sports Football Club, a social network for FIFA Players which integrates challenges and storylines of the real thing.

-Club will unify all FIFA games in the future.

-Ray Lewis, Peyton Hillis, and Clay Matthews all in the house for Madden NFL 12.

-Most complete, authentic, and emotion filled Madden ever according to Moore.

-And that's about it. Basic stuff we've heard before.

-Sports played a back seat here, nothing too groundbreaking minus the FIFA Online Service. Of course, if you are like me and a Battlefield fan, the Battlefield 3 stuff made you very excited for it's launch -- COD is going to have some serious issues me thinks.

A quiet start thus far for sports games at E3 2011....not unexpected, but we are expecting a lot more in the coming days!!!

iOOTP
is a sick invention meant to destroy the productivity of any human being who somewhat enjoys the game of baseball from now into infinity.

At least, that's my conspiracy theory on why such a great gem of an app has found its way onto the scene. iOOTP 2011 is, up to this point, the most complete gem of a text-sim to hit the App Store to date.

The first and most natural comparison someone will make is how does iOOTP stack up to its desktop counterpart. The answer is not bad but also not close. As strange as it sounds, the very core essence of OOTP is intact here, but the things that make OOTP incredibly deep are missing. So while you get the basic OOTP experience, you also can't micromanage your club in the manner you might want to if you are a veteran of the OOTP franchise.

Even still, iOOTP is still a deep and engrossing experience with enough statistical depth to keep you busy for hours on end.

You may remember the NCAA players lawsuit which claimed anti-trust violations occurred by EA and the NCAA in using college players likenesses right? Yesterday, the NCAA players lawsuit's anti-trust claims against EA and the NCAA were shot down by Judge Claudia Wilken.

Quote:
"A California federal judge on Monday nixed putative class antitrust claims that Electronic Arts Inc. plotted with the NCAA and its licensing firm to profit improperly off college athletes' likenesses.

U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken dismissed claims that the video game company, along with the NCAA and The Collegiate Licensing Co., conspired to avoid paying student basketball and football players for the use and sale of their likenesses in popular NCAA-themed video games.

However, the judge granted the players two weeks to amend their antitrust allegations."

This isn't a complete dismissal of the lawsuit, and I think that needs to be stressed. But it is a serious blow against Keller and Co's case for sure. We'll keep on top of this case as we have since the beginning!

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters
is the latest iteration of EA Sports' golf series that has prominently featured Tiger on the cover for the better part of the last 10 years.

While the series has seen some controversy, EA has stood by its man so far. However, EA decided to hedge its bets somewhat by taking Tiger off the cover of most versions of the game this year, replacing him instead with the most prestigious course and tournament in golf.

Beyond the debut of Augusta National and the Masters in video games, there are also new golfers and the usual selection of new courses and our old favorites. But does all of this equal a great game of golf? The answer to that question depends on what you want out of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters.

I fulfilled one of the many things on my sports gaming bucket list today by golfing a round at Augusta National, thanks to Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters.

It was everything that I had always hoped it would be.

Of course, if you happen to be someone who has a personal vendetta against the prestigious club because of their membership policies or some other reason, you might find yourself ready to throw your console through the window. Nevertheless, Augusta National IS this year's game as the entire presentation is built around the lore and lure of Augusta National.

But is Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters a one-trick pony? Read on to read my initial thoughts on the game.

RedLynx took advantage of the Mac App Store craze with their own title, Monster Trucks Nitro. The game plays a lot like its older brother, Trials HD, just replace the motorcycle with monster trucks and "bigger" obstacles, and you have a decent idea where this game is coming from.
