Amidst all the speculation that EA is bringing three new franchises -- and gamers everywhere postulating one of those new franchises is actually the return of an old friend, MVP Baseball -- there remains a sobering reminder for this generation of sports games.

It's the old west equivalent of the statement, "This town ain't big enough for the both of us."

In this day and age, the resources that a big ... Read More

"Nothing happens in a vacuum."

Let's recap the news of the past several days. First we learn that some members of EA's Tiburon Studio are leaving. Then we find out that those members happen to be Ian Cummings and several other "big" names (yet to be confirmed) within the studio. Then we find out that Madden's release date will be pushed back for the first time ever to late August.

It's ... Read More

Could gamers see QB #12 as the Green Pay Packers QB instead of Aaron Rodgers in this year's edition of Madden NFL Football?

Don't count on it.

There is nasty speculation that Madden can't or won't have real players in the game because of the ongoing NFL lockout -- not only is that speculation completely untrue, it's also been directly touched upon by different people from within EA.

In my interview with Mike Snider, an idea came up that was so ingenious and so simple that I was really floored it hasn't been done before: incorporating many of Golf's greats into Tiger at some point in the future for a 'greatest of' type of showdown.

Imagine having a field of Nickalus, Woods, Hagen, Hogan, Watson, Player, and Vardon playing against each other in their primes. The only place such a thing is possible ... Read More

I feel like Pink Floyd's 'Welcome to the Machine' should be playing in the background as I type this blog.

It only seems fitting since the Madden hype machine is now getting into gear -- and today's teaser trailer definitely has gotten OSers talking.

Here's my bullet list of things I think are big news from the trailer:

-TV Style presentation looks to be a focal point this year: ... Read More

Every now and then, I have to write a blog of this sort to get the blood boiling among OS faithful and to seek your input on the more intricate issues of our genre.

The baseball games are where I'm laying my thesis down this week, as I think they provide a prime example of how the definition of realism in our genre (and perhaps all of video games) has changed in the last five years.

We have gone from ... Read More

I'm forced to audible on my blog post today, and I think I'll just post a quick missive on the first NCAA Football 12 screenshot and post a few things that are apparent as of today based upon the screenshot.

Here's a few things:

  • Attention to detail is no fluke: There are small details across the entire screenshot. Grass looks better (and is being kicked up behind the Florida Player), Uniforms are

In case you missed it, we are re-doing how we do reviews moving forward. I posted a blog about our new scoring system a few weeks ago, and you should check it out!

But within that blog post, I didn't quite explain how the new review process at Operation Sports is going to work, and I want to spend a few paragraphs talking about that here.

Starting today, you will see the new review process in action

Tuesday is d-day baseball fans.

Well…at least for those of you who own a PS3. The question is simple: should you buy the perennial champion of Baseball, MLB: The Show or should you delve into the world of the feisty upstart MLB 2K11?

Well in the next few paragraphs, I'll try to explain the best choice for you. I must admit this is a nearly impossible task simply because there are more situations possible ... Read More

Bird vs. Johnson. Yankees vs. Red Sox. Alabama vs. Auburn. Democrats vs. Republicans. Cats vs. Dogs.

Stick skills vs. player ratings.

Yeah, I went there.

One of the debates which has really simmered under the surface but I think is one of the biggest decisions sports game developers make is how to treat stick skills vs. player ratings.

In short: how much better can the guy ... Read More

The team at SCEA's San Diego Studios has always said they wanted to do analog controls in The Show at a time which made sense for them and which they could do a fantastic job with them.

Well SCEA San Diego, mission accomplished.

I've played three games in the demo and at this point, I can honestly say the analog controls are easily every bit as good as those found in Major League Baseball 2K11, and ... Read More

Ok everyone, let's relax and take a deep breath -- because I really don't want a bunch of irrational hate following the words I'm about to type. Not because I'm a wuss, but because what I'm about to explain is really a brief manifesto of the future of gaming and hits on a lot of different topics.

But what I want to stress at the onset for the short-attention span crowd is that by extending their deal out one more

The Associated Press posted a story this weekend which talks about the Sam Keller vs. The World case which is set to go in front of the 9th Circuit of Appeals Court in Pasadena tomorrow.

That's right, it's yet another D-Day for the case which could go all the way to the Supreme Court -- so don't get your hopes up for any final resolution until we get nine votes in Washington DC on the matter.

It is no secret a huge mess of hardcore gamers heavily dislike Madden these days. As I pointed out in my half of the 'is Madden successful this generation' debate with Christian McLeod, Madden has played it pretty safe overall this generation, which has led to it falling behind some of it's peers in our genre.

When the game has tried to innovate and add new depths to its gameplay the features have failed to ... Read More

I am what you might call the typical audience Fight Night Champion is wanting to capture. I don't watch boxing much if at all, I hardly know any names currently in the sport, but I still find Fight Night somewhat intriguing and fun.

But here's the catch for me and probably the disclaimer: I'm not the simulation boxing fan by any means. I couldn't tell you the first thing about the sport. What I can tell you is ... Read More
