EA's (ERTS) Stock Year-to-Date chart as of this morning.

It feels like 2008 all over again in so many ways -- except for the fact Madden is actually somewhat good nowadays and most sports games are much older and wiser.

However, just like in 2008, strong sales headwinds could be heading for sports gaming.

If you remember at the depths of the recession of 2008-2009 (before trillions were spent ... Read More

What do you do when you include the greatest player to ever play your sport in an edition of your game and its sales double?

Why you bring him back and include a bunch of his classic compadres. 2K Sports deserves a lot of credit for basically ensuring 2K12 will have some novelty of its own. Novelty is what can make a stale series great again -- just ... Read More

I always dreamed I'd start social movements that had people pumped up to tackle tough but important issues in the world today.

But I guess I'll settle for the problem of first-day sports game buyers for now.

Owen Good of Kotaku took up my cause in an article this weekend, writing a pretty darned good piece pretty much agreeing with the notion that buying sports games on launch day is a frivolous effort ... Read More

A couple of years ago, I wrote a deeply flawed take on whether a two year cycle for sports games would work -- it was so embarrassing I have stricken it from the official record. While I applied some rough math to the problem, my numbers were deeply flawed and thus my conclusions were way off.

So what I want to do today is to simply apply some 5th grade math to the problem to demonstrate whether a two year cycle is ... Read More

Many of you that have read my blog over the past 3 years know that I'm a man who loves to spot trends and then extrapolate what they mean into the future. I love to see where our endlessly exciting and hugely creative industry is going in the future while also enjoying what we have to offer in the present.

One of the trends I became very worried ... Read More

For the first time ever, I'm playing Road to Glory over Dynasty mode.

Read that again.

I'm shocked as well.

While I think the Coaching Carousel is a good addition to Dynasty, my early days with NCAA Football 12 have almost exclusively been spent playing Road to Glory. Between the High School season mode (awesome) and the new Coach Trust feature (better) -- Road to Glory is finally getting ... Read More

I've harped on sports games' need to immerse us into themselves by copying the medium by which we experience sports the most (TV). The difference in the perception of each football game this season can easily be traced to one game doing this (Madden) and one game not (NCAA).

The NCAA demo felt a strange combination of stale and uninspired combined with beauty and polish. On one hand, NCAA's gameplay will undboutedly ... Read More

As we all wake up this morning to see yet another leader of the Madden team has left Tiburon for seemingly greener pastures, the question to ponder is: Who should be worried about this recent trend?

But the real question everyone is really wanting to know is: what's going on at Tiburon to have so many key people leaving?

We don't know the answer to the latter question because that requires intricate ... Read More

In very few circles are gamers quicker to loathe a company that produces so much for their genre than sports gamers are for EA. Much of the discontent stems from EA winning the NFL Exclusive License back in the middle of the last decade -- but does EA deserve their bad guy rap?

I say no they don't. In fact, EA probably deserves a reputation that's on the other end of the spectrum for sports gamers. Not only does ... Read More

I didn't go to the show, our amigos Chase Becotte, Christian McLeod and TD St. Matthew-Daniel all did attend and will have their full fleshed out thoughts when they get some R&R after returning. I, like all of you, watched the developments from the show floor from my own house -- and while most of us got a chance to play the games, there are still a few takeaways you can garner from the show. Here's what I found to be most ... Read More

The year is now 2011. People are jumping online like never before and just today, the UN announced that access to the internet is a fundamental human right.

But yet when it comes to sports games, Offline gaming -- away from all that inter-connectivity, social gaming, and all the other terms you apply to online modes -- seems to rule the roost.

We've done polls about this very thing on OS in the past, ... Read More

FINALLY! It's as if a day of vindication arrived when the details of the Coaching Carousel in NCAA Football 12 came out. The missing link in dynasty mode had been included -- so all is well right?

According to the latest poll on OS, that seems to be the case. 63% of all voters at the time of this writing love the feature -- I voted that way as well. Some are waiting to see, I don't blame their jaded hearts.

Finally, Madden gamers everywhere got a look at the newly revamped Franchise mode in Madden NFL 12 this morning via the missives of Josh Looman.

However, for the ADD crowd (and for those who somehow want to hear what I have to say, funny thought I know) here's what I thought of each announcement in the blog in a slightly revamped 'What's Hot/What's Not' style.

What's Hot

The annual media blitz has begun with EA's football games, both the American and European versions. Some slow news is leaking out about the rest of the fall lineup for sports games, and people are sure to get overwhelmed in the not-too-distant future with so much coming out about so many games.

I always have a few stories I like to follow each major release season, here are three I think are particularly interesting: ... Read More

NCAA Football 12 has some real positives going for it thus far -- the improved gameday atmosphere, new and improved looks, and on the surface the new tackling engine looks like the game has taken another step towards real-time physics (without actually getting there of course).

However, while all of the above is all well and good -- here are the things I'm waiting to hear before my excitement level leaps into ... Read More
