Typically I already have my predictions list out and ready to go by January 1st, I'm lagging this year. I do have excuses, but none of them are too good -- but I now have some predictions to send your way.

Here's what I see for sports gaming in the next year!

SSX is arcade sports game of the year material. Shocking? No. But sometimes you don't have to go out on huge limbs to make predictions and this ... Read More

@ltw0303 - Do you think SCEA has done enough the last few years to move MLB: The Show forward? What would you change?

Chris -- The Show is the quintessential sports game which is a victim of it's own success. You can only do so much on a one year development cycle and when you have a great game it's hard to force yourself to innovate for fear of messing up the product. The team at SCEA has been trying to innovate ... Read More

Welcome to the very first edition of the OS Editor's mailbag. I tweeted last night to all of you awesome @operationsports followers to ask me any question you want and I then decide which questions I want to answer. Well you asked, so now you will receive! Here we go!

@mopeman -- Will EA Sports ever make another baseball game??

Chris - Yes. Without a doubt. Think about it this way, they were forced ... Read More

We are going to see what I believe is one of the more interesting (and important) battles next season between EA's NBA title and NBA 2K13. While many are going to be quick to dismiss EA's title in this space, I believe there is a very real chance EA will compete in sales (the most important number) once again this next season. Here's how I think it'll end up going down.

First off, NBA 2K13 will almost certainly be ... Read More

There's a lot of negative sentiment around the community about NBA 2K12 this season, some of the complaints are entirely justified. In fact, I'd say they're completely warranted in many cases.

But we're not here to complain or bash, we're here to try to give a rational explanation for why exactly NBA 2K12 seems to have 'failed' in many people's eyes (at least in terms of sales, which is the strongest indicator of ... Read More

If you've read my blog posts consistently over the last 4 years, you likely know what's coming next out of my mouth. But every Winter it bears repeating so that someday, sports gaming developers will see the light and produce the perfect sports game: the future of this genre lies in customization and engrossing presentation packages.

That's it. Why? Because everyone has their own vision for what realism means, and ... Read More

It seems as if NBA 2K12 had a good October (at least compared to it's peers). Of course, there's so much more to this story than just that -- as video game sales have been having issues for the past year and even with a strong lineup of games, October saw little growth over last year.

Given the lack of hard data publicly available in NPD reports these days, hard game sales numbers are hard to come by. But, in this ... Read More

I wrote a blog last Friday which asked the question, "Can Sports Games Meet Lofty Expectations?" The response to which I'm pretty sure I could have predicted as people from the many different ends of the spectrum of visitors here at OS chimed in on the blog over the weekend.

Now I want to ask a different question which some brought up in the blog which I hadn't put much thought to until the past day or so: do sports ... Read More

2011 will be known for a lot of things in our genre, but perhaps the one takeaway I have from this year that stands above the rest is how it seems like there's an air of disappointment about this year's releases despite the fact there weren't any truly bad games among the top titles.

Sure, NCAA was buggy. Madden was, well it was Madden. NBA 2K still doesn't know a lot of people play online. And MLB: The Show seemed ... Read More

The NBA 2K12 review raised some eyebrows here at OS. Under the new scoring scale, no game has achieved a 9.0.

In fact even under the evolving process of moving from the old scale to the new one no game has achieved a 9.0 in that past 13 months or so.

And interestingly enough, people are beginning to ask if a 9.0 is even possible at OS anymore. Whereas many sites hand out 9.0s like they have no real ... Read More

If you would have told me a year ago that EA Basketball would have an in-road to the most hardcore of the basketball gaming crowd without releasing an NBA game in roughly 24 months, I would've called you crazy.

But here we sit, 2K Sports' flagship (and really just about only) title still has proven it can't do online well. While fixes are abound, we all know the most important period for the game is in the first ... Read More

I'm going to try to be a bit more candid on reviews we publish going forward, and I really wanted to take a minute today to explain just how hard it is to review games sometimes.

First off, many of you may know we changed our review process earlier this year. While we intended to change the scoring scale right off the bat, we didn't quite fully get there until the Madden review. You can see a couple of discrepancies ... Read More

The NCAA Football series (and really Madden NFL as well) have had some glaring problems with its gameplay for years now. As I said in my Madden review, EA football is the most unrealistic realistic game on the market. The core football tenets are so completely ridiculous at times that I have a hard time swallowing my pride to keep playing. However, the game tends to get realistic results based on it's method.

And ... Read More

I watched college football yesterday. Then I decided to play a game of NCAA Football 12.

Then I turned my console off -- there's no comparison to be made here.

The NCAA Football series is in a sadder state than I realized, and if the presentation and atmosphere aren't fixed for next year, I can't see how anyone can continue to spend $60 on the game with a straight face. After this year's "bug extravaganza" ... Read More

To give a new purpose for my blog, I'm starting a new feature I'll try to do on the Thursday or Friday of each week. Basically, I'll give some comments on the top news stories of the week with some reflection and perhaps some context. This is basically my spot to give my thoughts in as random of a fashion as necessary to cover everything -- and to give insights as to what's going on at OS right now.

So are you ready ... Read More
