Anyone running a business model with the internet should be very wary of what happened in Canada this week.

There have been two camps in terms of the internet's future -- one which postulates that the internet can grow with its traffic via innovation and investment and the other which basically says there is a limit to what we can actually transfer without costs getting ridiculously high.

It appears ... Read More

It seems as if a perfect storm is rising for the month of March in our genre.

It is a very rare event that so many games with so many questions surrounding them are released within a month's time period. We typically consider the Fall a big time for releases here at OS, when we have Madden, NHL, and NBA games all out in a three month period along with any other big holiday titles in the racing or miscellaneous ... Today, the OS Staff took place in a staff roundtable discussing the viability of another NCAA Football game in today's marketplace. For once, we were all largely on the same page and in agreement that it wasn't very likely.

I think this is a topic that deserves a bit more time and length though to truly understand and appreciate what developers have to do these days to make a quality sports title, especially from scratch. ... Read More

Review scores have been a lightning rod here at Operation Sports for a long time -- for a variety of reasons. While we have tried to allow reviewers as much freedom as possible in scoring games, we also realize that our approach the last several years also lacked consistency because of that openness.

One man's 8 is another man's 7, while one man's 9 is another man's 8.5. Review scores are subjective by nature, ... Read More
We are still scoring games from 0-10 on .5 stops. However, we've shifted the scale a bit so we can now effectively use all 20 stops on the scale. Here's an overview of each score and what the number means.

0 - .5 (Absolutely horrendous) -- These are the worst of the worst. Think about games that just don't work at all and they go here. For a developer to get this, it almost has to be due to gross negligence. Don't just avoid these games, make fun of people for buying such a piece ... Read More

People who have read my articles and blogs for the past couple of year's know I like to made predictions for the New Year about our genre for no other reason than to just speculate on what the New Year might bring.

I'd like to think I have had a good string of success with my predictions, but Brett Favre would also like to think he is able to play football until he's 65 too.

Nonetheless, last ... Read More

This is going to be one of my most hated blog posts I have yet to write -- but I have always strived to tell the truth as I see it in this blog space. With that in mind, I know there are A LOT of people on OS that hate EA for entering into the exclusive license agreement the NFL offered gaming companies via a bid process and are looking for any reason to tear that agreement down. And while the common cry among Madden haters is to ... Read More

In case you haven't heard, 2010 is coming to a close in a couple of weeks -- so now is the time to take a look at what I predicted for 2010 and whether I was completely off my rocker or can be legally declared a Swami.

Let's review the picks -- with my comments added.
  1. The appetite for risk is over- I said niche sports wouldn't receive any additional attention from major publishers and more existing

Well OSers, I have to admit, Day 2 was a mixture of the good, the bad and the ugly. As for how the workouts went, I think today's were pretty similar to yesterday except you could take away basketball and add in soccer. I worked hard, burned some calories and had what I would consider a good set of workouts. The bad is that the ankle is bothersome for me right now, no EA Sports Active tomorrow means I'll be doing a lot ... Read More

Ok, I made it through day one with no real issues. The ankle had some issues on a few Yoga poses, but it wasn't as bad as I thought it might be. My EA Sports Active 2 workout was solid -- the mountain biking in the midst of the workout was actually pretty tough. However, there were a few workouts I just couldn't get working right. I just had to skip over those after doing them the best I could without the game registering ... Read More

It's been a couple of years since the fitness game genre has really come to prominence with Wii Fit and EA Sports Active. Yours truly has really ignored these games because I already had a fitness plan and didn't really care to try them.

However, either by sheer curiosity or divine inspiration I have decided to take on both EA Sports Active 2 and Wii Fit Plus to see exactly how both products help with fitness or

Jerry Jones, is that you running EA Sports?

It was apparent something was amiss with EA back in the winter when we found out they were abandoning one of their cornerstones in NBA Live to start anew with NBA Elite -- despite the fact Live made significant strides towards catching the 2K series in quality.

Then Elite was just plain bad.

Then Elite was cancelled.

Then we find out there ... Read More

OS'ers are a rather hardcore bunch.

No really, you guys are REALLY hardcore.

I love you guys for that, but sometimes I just want to scream, "This is a game people, let's enjoy it for that for a bit!"

So I must tell a story about the loathed yet still popular gaming franchise known as Madden NFL Football to illustrate my point.

I arrived at a friends house to watch some elections ... Read More

In the "Steve Jobs hinted at something so we must speculate as much as possible" file, several analysts are trying to guess what the Emperor of the Technological realm meant when he said "We have $51 billion in cash laying around," or something like that -- he really said Apple was going to use its money for "strategic opportunities" which is suit speak for "we're about to buy a ton of stuff.".

From CNBC:

Quote:
Video game publisher Electronic Arts says its fiscal second-quarter net loss narrowed, and its adjusted results handily surpassed expectations thanks to strong sales of the latest "FIFA" and "Madden" games.

For the three months ended Sept. 30, EA posted a net loss of $201 million, or 61 cents per share.
