Game Notes
NOTRE DAME

-Cierre Wood is second in rushing in the NCAA. He is number one in rushing touchdowns with nine. Expect to see a lot of Wood.

-Irish defense hopes to build off strong defensive performance against Purdue. Air Force is a running team and that will have to be Bob Diaco's first concern.

-Freshman Everett Golson will get the nod at quarterback. It will be his first career start.

AIR FORCE

-Running back Asher Clark will need to have a big game for the Air Force to have a chance. He is their most dynamic player.

-The Air Force defense has played well this year, but against weaker competition. Although, they did lose a close one against #6 ranked TCU.

The Irish will have many prospects in attendance for this game. Here is a look at the list.

Irish crush Boilermakers
Defense holds Purdue offense to 243 total yards
ND 41 PUR 14

Freshman Aaron Lynch records one of his two sacks on Purdue quarterback Robert Marve.

This was the game defensive coordinator Bob Diaco has been waiting for. They held the Purdue offense to 243 total yards and forced 4 turnovers. Purdue quarterback Robert Marve was intercepted three times and fumbled once. Robert Blanton picked him off twice while Harrison Smith had one of his own. Freshman Aaron Lynch, now getting more playing time, recorded two sacks. Linebacker Carlo Calabrese replaced Dan Fox in the starting lineup and played well recording seven tackles.

TJ Jones tip toes along the back of the endzone for Everett Golson's first career touchdown pass.

Coach Brian Kelly decided to start senior Dayne Crist at quarterback. It seemed to be the right choice. Crist started out throwing and running for a touchdown in the first half. Everything was going well until Crist again was hurt. He suffered a herniated disk. He has always had trouble staying on the field and it continued Saturday. Once again, Brian Kelly turned to freshman Everett Golson. The highly touted prospect played well throwing for 119 yards, a touchdown, and an interception in the second half.

Cierre Wood busts loose for a 86 yard touchdown.

Cierre Wood continued his stellar play. He racked up 218 yards from scrimmage and scored a touchdown. In five games this year, Wood has 715 rushing yards with 9 touchdowns with a staggering 8.1 yards per carry average. Hes also managed to catch 15 balls for 140 yards. His name has started to catch some Heisman attention.

QUICK NOTES
  • Dayne Crist has a herniated disk. He will be out 8 weeks.
  • Brian Kelly inked his first recruit of the year in Brennan Lacey. He is a 6'5" 288 lb defensive tackle out of West Monroe, Louisiana. Lacey is a 4 star recruit and the #10 ranked defensive tackle in the country.

-Defensive coordinator Bob Diaco has got to get them to play better. The defense has been awful. Linebacker Dan Fox has been replaced by Carlo Calabrese.

-Tight end Tyler Eifert returns from back injury.

Purdue

-The Boilermakers will be without starting running back Ralph Bolden. Senior back Sean Matti will start.

Instant classic
Freshman Everett Golson leads Irish on game winning drive
ND 52 PITT 48

Everett Golson celebrates after rushing in for a game winning touchdown with :06 left.

The match up between the Pitt Panthers and the Fighting Irish on Saturday was thrilling from start to finish. They battled back and forth all day with little defense. Combined, they managed to score 100 points. There were plenty of big plays but there was one hero. One unlikely hero. Freshman Everett Golson would step in for his first and biggest moment of his college career.

The Notre Dame defense was stumped and gassed by the hurry up offense of the Panthers. Pitt saw it in the first drive and deployed it all game. In the first quarter, both teams traded touchdowns to make it 7-7. Tommy Rees was sacked and fumbled to open the second. The fumble was returned by safety Andrew Taglianetti for a touchdown. Rees again had trouble all game with turnovers. Irish managed to record a safety then after receiving the punt, Cierre Wood ran for a 36 yard touchdown. Pitt then added another score on the next drive to make it 21-17 Pitt at the half.

The second half got wild. Pitt opened up with a quick score to make it 28-17. Michael Floyd answered with a touchdown of his own. He caught an eight yard pass from Rees. Floyd had a huge game with 10 catches for a 174 yards and a score. The Panthers then kicked two consecutive field goals to go up 34-24. By the third quarter, Tommy Rees had turned the ball over four times. Coach Kelly had enough and turned to senior Dayne Crist. His first snap he rolls out and is hit hard. Crist suffered a concussion and was out just as quick as he went in. What was Brian Kelly to do now? As the third quarter was winding down, Pitt continued to drive. They got the ball down to the Irish 30 threatening to score again. One of the biggest plays happened next when Lo Wood picked of Tino Sunseri and returned it 76 yards for a touchdown.

Lo Wood returns an interception 76 yards for a touchdown at Heinz Field on Saturday.

Coach Kelly decided to go to freshman Everett Golson. His impact was not felt early though. For his first two drives, all he did was hand off to Cierre Wood who had a huge fourth quarter. Wood scored two of his three touchdowns in the fourth. Pitt would answer both of those scores. Tino Sunseri hooked up with freshman wide receiver Todd Thomas on a 45 yard touchdown putting them up 48-45 with 1:48 left. Now Everett Golson could not continue to hand off the ball. Time was not on his side. Golson went 4 out of 5 for 68 yards with the seconds ticking. With just :06 seconds left on the clock, Golson scrambled his way in for a 5 yard touchdown.

Cierre Wood had another huge game with 213 yards and 3 touchdowns.

"We could not continue to turn the ball over and expect to win that game. That is why I made the change." said coach Kelly. When asked about who next weeks starter will be against Purdue Kelly said "As far as next week. I dont know. While we were very impressed with Golson, we are unsure. Were going to see where Dayne is at with his concussion symptoms. Both guys will get reps in practice and we will go from there."

Irish pick off Spartans
Harrison Smith and defense hold MSU scoreless in second half

MSU 13 ND 31

Harrison Smith intercepts Kirk Cousins for the second time.

Coming into Saturday, Michigan State was ranked 13. For the Irish, this was a huge game. After falling out of the top 25 at the hands of Denard Robinson and the Wolverines, Notre Dame could take a significant leap back towards the rankings. They did just that. While it is still unknown what this will actually do for coach Brian Kelly and the Irish, it was certainly a dominant performance.

Ethan Johnson sacks and forces a fumble on Kirk Cousins.

Being back at South Bend seemed to inspire the Irish defense. In the first half, they halted two drives by the Spartans and limited them to two field goals. Tommy Rees was able to hook up with TJ Jones for a 36 yard touchdown in the first quarter. With just over a minute left in the second quarter, Irish was up 10-6. MSU quarterback Kirk Cousins then led the Spartans down for a touchdown. He hooked up with Keshawn Martin for a 22 yard strike. Spartans went up 13-10 heading into the locker room.

Cierre Wood ran for 170 yards and scored twice.

After the break it was all Notre Dame. Cierre Wood scored twice in the first four minutes of the third quarter. He broke off runs of 56 and 33 yards. Cousins was harassed the rest of the game. The Irish defense did not give up another point. Harrison Smith picked him off twice in the second half. Jonas Gray added another touchdown in the fourth to close things out. It was a big, big win for Notre Dame.

Down and out
Wolverines pull away in fourth quarter to win rivalry game
ND 10 MICH 20

Tommy Rees turned over the ball four times and was also sacked six times.

It was a long night for Tommy Rees. The Wolverine defense was all over him in the first night game ever at The Big House. They managed to pick him off three times and force him to fumble once as well. The Irish offensive line was unable to protect him, giving up six sacks. Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly tried to turn to Cierre Wood on the ground. That was also stopped by Michigan's defense. It was a very impressive effort by the Wolverines holding Irish's run game to a negative 34 yards.

Manti Te'o delivers a big hit on Denard Robinson.

The game started off with flashbacks. Denard Robinson drove the Wolverines right down the field for a quick score in the first minute of the game. The Irish answered quickly with a score of their own making it 7-7 at the end of the first. The second and third quarters were dominated by defense on both sides. This year, the Irish defense did not let Robinson run wild. They held him to negative 4 yards and sacked him six times. Robinson though, is not limited to just his legs.

Denard Robinson threw for 275 yards and a TD.

Michigan's offense caught fire in the fourth on the arm of Denard Robinson. First, he drove them down for a field goal to make it 13-10. Irish got the ball back and started driving. Rees got them into the red zone and then was sacked and fumbled. Robinson scooped up the opportunity and passed his way down the field. Michigan capped it off with a 18 yard touchdown run by Vincent Smith. Irish could not get anything going from then on. This will mostly certainly drop Irish out the top 25, and send Michigan into the top 25.

NOTRE DAME

-Last year Denard Robinson scorched the Irish. He will be the defense's main focus.

-Cierre Wood will have to pace the offense with the Irish going up against a strong pass rush from the Wolverines.

MICHIGAN

-Look for Michigan to let Robinson do his thing. He ran all over the Irish last year. They hope to have a replay of last year.

-Notre Dame is ranked 21. Michigan could jump into the top 25 with a win.

Off and running
Cierre Wood paces Irish with 222 all-purpose yards and 3 TDs

USF 28 ND 40

Cierre Wood runs 74 yards for one of his three TDs.

The tilt between the Fighting Irish and the South Florida Bulls Saturday afternoon was a roller coaster ride for Brian Kelly. The Irish started out slower than Kelly would have liked. South Florida quarterback BJ Daniels drove the Bulls offense down the field on the first possession of the game and scored. Tommy Rees was shaky in the first quarter and couldn't generate any offense. Notre Dame trailed 7-0 at the end of the first.

Manti Te'o intercepts USF quarterback BJ Daniels.

To start the second, BJ Daniels was picked off by Manti Te'o as he returned into the redzone. After a series of hand offs, Cierre Wood punched it in for a 1 yard touchdown to tie it at seven a piece. This pumped up the Irish defense who then three and outed the Bulls on the next possesion. Rees continued his shaky performance by throwing an interception to Ricardo Dixon as he returned it 54 yards for a touchdown making it 14-7. Kelly then pulled aside Rees to calm the sophomore down. It worked. Rees then led the Irish on a drive ending in a field goal to make it 14-10. He got the ball back again with a little over a minute to play. Rees connected with Michael Floyd on a 55 yard strike for a score. Notre Dame went into the half up 17-14. That was the turning point in the game.

Michael Floyd scores on a 55 yard pass from Tommy Rees.

Notre Dame dominated the third quarter. The defense held the Bulls offense scoreless. Tommy Rees and the offense were able to string together a field goal and a 2 yard touchdown from Jonas Gray. The third quarter ended with the Irish up 27-14.

Skip Holtz and the USF offense entered desperation mode and were able to put together a scoring drive to open the fourth quarter. BJ Daniels hooked up with Evan Landi on a 16 yard score. That made it 27-21 with over seven minutes left. Brian Kelly's mode was to run the ball and chew clock. On the very next play following the kickoff, Cierre Wood broke free for a 74 yard touchdown. Still with over seven minutes, USF got the ball back and scored again making it 33-28 Irish lead. Cierre Wood, again went to work. He scampered again on the next series for a 43 yard touchdown. Wood closed out the game 40-28.

NOTRE DAME

-Sophomore Tommy Rees won the starting job at quarterback. Coach Brian Kelly will have to call a balanced attack to help Rees settle in.

-Running back Cierre Wood is the unquestioned starter. Irish look for him to pick up where he left off at the end of last year.

-Manti Te'o is the leader of a defense looking to improve. Irish could have won more games last year if they got more stops. They'll need more this year.

USF

-Skip Holtz, the son of Irish legend Lou Holtz, returns to Notre Dame to coach his Bulls against Brian Kelly and the Irish.

-After playing inconsistently last year, quarterback BJ Daniels needs to play better for the Bulls to win.

-South Florida defense will have to keep pressure on the underclassmen Tommy Rees and disrupt the offense.

Champs!
Irish beat Mississippi State 34-17 to win BCS Championship

Its been too long for the fans of the Fighting Irish. Brian Kelly in just his second year has gotten Notre Dame back to the forefront of college football. Kelly and the Irish took on Mississippi State in New Orleans at the Superdome. The opening quarter set the stage for a tough game for both sides. The Bulldogs were the only to score on just a field goal.

Robert Blanton snatches a pitch from QB Chris Relf and returns it for a TD.

Notre Dame used a big 2nd quarter from their defense and the speed of Robby Toma to take a 21-3 lead at halftime. Robert Blanton jumped in front of a pitch from Bulldogs quarterback Chris Relf and ran it back 29 yards for a TD erupting the crowd in the Superdome. "We knew they like to run the option. Coach Kelly told us DBs to be ready to break up the pitch if we had enough pressure initially. It worked out great." said senior Robert Blanton. The Bulldogs returned the kickoff and the offense took the field. The very first play of that drive Lo Wood intercepted Relf and returned it for another defensive TD. This then fired up the offense. Tommy Rees connected to Robby Toma on a slant and he took it 57 yards for the score. That made it 21-3.

Lo Wood turns an INT into a TD.

The Bulldogs made a small push in the second half, scoring once in the 3rd and once in the 4th. But it was not enough. Jonas Gray busted a 94 yard TD run in the 4th to seal the deal. "I couldn't be happier. I'm thrilled we could win this one for the seniors. The boys played great and we still have plenty of underclassmen on this team. We have a great future."

Jonas Gray scores a 94 yard TD.
