Irish ride Floyd for victory
Three touchdowns from Michael Floyd lead Irish to win over BC

BC 21 ND 42

Michael Floyd gives thanks to a higher power after recording his third touchdown of the day.

Saturday's tilt between Notre Dame and Boston College was closer than the score shows. The Eagles came out to South Bend to compete. They would not be rolled over. The first half was tight with each team matching touchdowns in the first and second quarters. Michael Floyd scored on passes from Andrew Hendrix in the first and second quarter. Boston College answered each touchdown to tie it 14-14 at halftime.

Harrison intercepts his 8th pass of the year and returned it for a touchdown.

In the middle of the third quarter, the Eagles were inside the redzone and were threatening to score. A score would take the lead. But Harrison Smith was not having any of that. Smith intercepted Dan Shinskie at the 2 yard line. He returned it 98 yards for the score. "It was the turning point. No doubt. I can't say enough about what Harrison Smith does for this team" said coach Brian Kelly. The defense came up big in the second half. Freshman Aaron Lynch had the best game of his young career recording four sacks. They were able to sack quarterback Dan Shinskie an eye popping 10 times.

Freshman Aaron Lynch celebrates after recording one of his four sacks.

Opening the fourth quarter, Hendrix hooked up with Michael Floyd for the third touchdown between the duo. Boston College would match on a big pass play from Shinskie to make it 21-28 Irish. Then stepped in the closer. Jonas Gray took over and scored twice in the last four minutes to close out the game.

Hendrix played well completing 60% of his passes throwing for 254 yards and 3 touchdowns. Hendrix continues to progress and is gaining more confidence with each game. He is getting help from a great ground game in Cierre Wood and Jonas Gray. They both again eclipsed 100 yards on the ground. Next week they play #4 Stanford. It will be the biggest game of the year.

Game Notes

NOTRE DAME

-Brian Kelly has developed a three headed monster in the Irish backfield. Look for him to deploy that with backs Cierre Wood, Jonas Gray, and George Atkinson.

-Irish defense should be able to have a good game. Boston College has had weak production from their senior quarterback Dan Shinskie.

BOSTON COLLEGE

-Running back Montell Harris should eclipse the 1,000 yard mark on the Saturday against the Irish. Harris has 992 yards and the Eagles will most certainly run him often.

-Stud sophomore linebacker Kevin Pierre Louis is the leader on defense. He has 8.5 sacks this year. The Eagles will need a big game from him.

Atkinson ignites Irish again
Irish comeback from 24-0 deficit

ND 43 TERPS 31

George Atkinson sparked Notre Dame again with a 95 yard kick return touchdown.

The Fighting Irish got off to a sluggish start in Saturday night's clash with the Maryland Terapins. Right from the opening kickoff, Maryland was on a mission to upset the Irish. The Terps took the kickoff and scored on their opening drive. Minutes later after stopping the Irish offense, Maryland quarterback Danny O'Brien again carved up Notre Dame's defense. O'Brien again led the Terps to another score to go up 14-0.

The beginning of the second quarter didn't get any better for coach Brian Kelly and the Irish. O'Brien had the Terps offense flowing. With over five minutes to play in the second, O'Brien launched a 59 yard bomb down the sideline to senior wide receiver Ronnie Tyler. Irish were down 21-0. On top of that, Maryland again added a field goal right after to make it 24-0. With 3:45 left to play in the second, Notre Dame needed a spark.

That spark came from a familiar freshman named George Atkinson. This is becoming routine for Atkinson. Need a big play to spark the team? In steps the freshman. After going up 24-0, the Terps kicked off after the field goal to Atkinson. Big mistake. He returned it 95 yards for the score to make it 24-7. Now the comeback begins. The defense for the Irish then went and stopped the Terps. Quarterback Andrew Hendrix got the ball back with just over a minute remaining in the first half. Hendrix completed a 59 yard pass to receiver Robby Toma and got them to the 33 yard line. With :05 seconds remaining, Hendrix hit Michael Floyd in the back of the endzone for the touchdown making it 24-14 at the half. Irish were back in the game.

Michael Floyd hauls in one of his two touchdowns at the end of the second quarter.

Irish received the kick for the start of the second half. They continued the comeback on the back of halfback Jonas Gray. He scampered for a 47 yard touchdown and made it 24-21. The Irish inched even closer sacking Danny O'Brien on the following series to make it 24-23. After receiving the punt, Hendrix hooked up with Floyd again on a 34 yard touchdown to take the lead 29-24.

Andrew Hendrix operated a great comeback in the second half Saturday night against the Terps.

Jonas Gray opened the fourth quarter with another touchdown to jump up 36-24. Maryland made it interesting driving for one more touchdown making it 36-31 with 4:28 remaining in the game. Brian Kelly then called on the talented freshman Atkinson. "George doesn't have an elaborate package right now. We just have a few plays installed for him. They hadn't seen him yet at running back so I thought I'd throw him in unnoticed" said coach Kelly. Atkinson bolted for a 51 yard touchdown closing out the game 43-31. While it started off scary, Kelly and the staff were thrilled with their resilience. It was a big win on the road for the Irish.

NOTRE DAME

-Irish will look to get their running game back on track after getting shut down by Wake Forest last week.

-Quarterback Andrew Hendrix has to be better in red zone. He has driven the Irish down there repeatedly but unable to get the ball into endzone.

MARYLAND

-Quarterback Danny O'Brien has a 18/16 touchdown to interception ratio. He has to find a way to limit turnovers against the Irish.

-Wake Forest showed a blueprint on how to slow down the Irish offense. Maryland needs to stop the run first and make the young Sophomore Andrew Hendrix beat you.

Irish slip past Demon Deacons
Kickoff return from freshman George Atkinson sparks comeback win
ND 23 WAKE 13

The second half opening kickoff return from George Atkinson sparked the Irish in their comeback win.

This could have gone very wrong for the Irish. The Demon Deacons came into the game Saturday with a solid passing defense. Well there game plan on defense was the total opposite. They stacked the box repeatedly and stuffed Notre Dame's rushing game. Cierre Wood rushed 20 times for just 40 yards. This made it tough sledding for the Irish offense. However, Andrew Hendrix played a mistake free game at quarterback and was able to fight through a pressing Demon Deacon defense.

Despite not throwing any touchdowns, Andrew Hendrix paced the Irish offense with 271 passing yards.

Wake Forest was gunning for an upset from the kickoff. They took an early 10-0 lead. Hendrix responded at the end of the first quarter leading a 80 yard drive down the field. It was capped off by a Jonas Gray 8 yard touchdown. The second quarter was tough for both sides, managing a field goal a piece. Heading into the locker room at half, Wake led 13-10.

Freshman George Atkinson returned to the field after halftime feeling the pressure of big time college football. "I told him that we need a spark and to get us out to the forty. Well he did more than that." said coach Kelly. Atkinson took the second half opening kickoff 96 yards for the touchdown. That put the Irish up 17-13. That was his third kick return of the year. When asked if we can expect to see more of Atkinson at running back Kelly said, "Well of course Cierre (Wood) is our starter and we still have alot of confidence in Jonas (Gray). But with what George has done, we might have to install some plays for him in the game plan."

Darius Fleming recorded 15 tackles Saturday against Wake Forest.

The kick return fired up the rest of the team. Wake Forest was then held scoreless in the second half. The defense had a rough first half but stepped up when needed in crunch time. They were led by senior Darius Fleming and his 15 tackles.
They were gashed by the rushing attack of the Demon Deacons but were solid against the pass. The Irish came out with a win but were nearly upset. They will have to play better if they hope to beat Maryland next week.

NOTRE DAME

-Kelly has had success with his more balanced play calling. Look for him to keep running the ball as Wake Forest has the 108th ranked rush defense.

-The defense will key on Wake's running game. They use a combination of running backs Brandon Pendergrass and Josh Harris.

WAKE FOREST

-Wake's defense will have their hands full with the Irish run game. They will need a strong game from their defense if they'll have any chance to win.

-Quarterback play has been poor for Wake Forest. They have switched on and off between sophomore Tanner Price and freshman Keenon Rush.

Freshman Davaris Daniels celebrates a 55 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Andrew Hendrix.

Saturdays game against the Navy Midshipmen was by far, Notre Dame's best game of the year. They played very well on both sides of the ball. After a successful showing against USC, Brian Kelly continued his new balanced offensive game plan. The Irish pounded the ball on the ground routinely while sprinkling in the pass. Between Cierre Wood, Jonas Gray, and George Atkinson, they managed to rush for 291 yards. Wood and Gray were able to both eclipse the 100 yard mark.

Cierre Wood and Jonas Gray both eclipsed 100 yards rushing.

Andrew Hendrix continued his strong play since overtaking the starting quarterback spot. He has managed the offense very nicely while passing for 212 yards and 2 touchdowns. Although, it is no secret that Hendrix has benefited from coach Kelly's balanced offensive play calling. "We have had a nice flow and balance to our offense. We hope to continue that on the road against Wake Forest." said Kelly.

The Irish defense turned in their second straight strong performance. They stuffed the Navy option repeatedly holding them to 112 rushing yards. On the day, Navy only managed a total of 253 yards of offense. Irish defenders had 14 tackles for loss and held Navy to 4 of 16 on third down. Harrison Smith picked off Navy quarterback Kriss Proctor twice. Gary Gray also picked him off and returned it for a 70 yard touchdown. It was a dominating game on both sides of the ball.

Future QB found?
Andrew Hendrix leads Irish to victory in first career start
USC 15 ND 29

Sophomore quarterback Andrew Hendrix played well in his first career start.

The Fighting Irish had their biggest win of the year on a rainy, wet, and cold Saturday night in South Bend. They rebounded from a loss against Air Force two weeks ago. They went from their lowest point to their highest point in the season. After losing to Air Force, Brian Kelly had two weeks to evaluate his quarterback predicament and to prepare for USC. It looks like he used that time very wisely. Kelly went with sophomore Andrew Hendrix. "I hate to use the term 'dumb it down.' But we really drew back the amount of plays and tried to keep the game plan simple for Andrew. I was really impressed with him tonight." said coach Kelly.

Brian Kelly used a ground and pound approach against the Trojans. An unusual tactic by the spread offense loving coach. He used many two and even three tight end sets to pound the ball against USC. Cierre Wood had a career high 32 carries for 195 yards and two scores. His intent was to let Hendrix get comfortable and not ask him to do to much. That game plan worked and worked well.

Cierre Wood continued his strong season with 195 yards on the ground and 2 touchdowns.

In the second half, the play calling got a little more aggressive. That is when you started to see Hendrix's play making ability come out. He showed a great awareness in the pocket scrambling and rolling out to make throws down field. With the Irish up 15-7 and the third quarter winding down, Hendrix hooked up with freshman Davaris Daniels for a 29 yard touchdown to make it 22-7. Then in the fourth, Hendrix showed off his arm. He launched a bomb in the endzone to TJ Jones, who caught it perfectly in stride for a 57 yard touchdown to lock up the game.

TJ Jones hauls in a 57 yard touchdown from Andrew Hendrix.

On the other side of the ball, Bob Diacco had the defense firing on all cylinders. They easily had their best performance of the year. They shut down a big time program. The Trojans could not get anything going on the ground. They were only able to gain 16 yards on the ground. Matt Barkley also had a tough night against the Irish pass defense. Picking up most of his yards in garbage time, he passed for 220 yards. It was an all around great performance by the Irish.

Irish stunned
Air Force upsets #17 Notre Dame 37-27

Air Force running back Asher Clark had a huge day with 239 all purpose yards and 2 touchdowns.

This is not what Brian Kelly had in mind when he pictured his second year in South Bend. "I'm actually surprised were 4-2. We are lucky to be 4-2 with all the turnovers we've had. I've said over and over you can not turn the ball over and expect to win. Well we threw 5 picks today, and look at the scoreboard. Another loss." said the coach. Kelly started his freshman Everett Golson. Not a start to remember. It got awful quick for Golson, who was pulled for Tommy Rees after throwing three first quarter interceptions.

Tommy Rees has been disappointing this year with 10 INT and only 5 TD.

Tommy Rees would get his second chance Saturday against the Air Force. That did not go well either. Rees was picked off twice and only completed 11 of 26 passes. Notre Dame now enters their bye week. This could not come at a better time for coach Kelly and the Irish. Kelly will have a two week quarterback battle as they prepare for rival USC. When asked who will start for the Irish at QB Kelly said "I don't know. We got two weeks. We will see who earns it."

George Atkinson scores one of his two kick return touchdowns.

Irish struggled in the second half to generate any offense after Cierre Wood went down with a strained calf. The only thing that really kept them in the game was freshman running back/kick returner George Atkinson. He managed to return two kicks for touchdowns. That would not be enough though. Air Force's slow paced run game was hard for the Irish defense to stop. Air Force chewed clock in the second half making it tough for any comeback. Running back Asher Clark was the center piece to their offense. He had a huge day with 239 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns.
