Owls Could Be Changing QBs

As Temple gears up for their week 3 matchup against #17 Syracuse, backup QB Landon O'Donnell could be under center.

"We are going to look at Landon to start the game against Syracuse. I believe Landon may be better suited for the offense we want to run, being a little quicker and having better vision. Ryan (Cochran) played well against Penn, but we'd like to see what Landon can do with more playing time." Coach Rice stated.

O'Donnell came in in relief of Cochran in the 4th quarter and threw a touchdown. He only rushed for 7 yards on 2 attempts, but Coach Rice feels with more time and setups, he could quickly rack up the yards.

Temple travels to the Carrier Dome to faced the nationally ranked Orange this Saturday for a night game.

Realignment Talks May Be Heating Up

Realignment talks have already begun early in the 2018 season, with the Big XII being front and center. It's looking like the commissioner would like to add up to 4 teams to go to 14 and have a conference championship. Currently the conference sits at 10 and is deemed one of the weaker conferences top to bottom. Adding 4 quality schools would get their numbers even with the ACC, Big 10, and the SEC. The Pac 12 currently sits at 12 teams, with no intentions of expanding.

Schools are already being targeted as potential candidates out of the AAC and the MWC, with a few independents being looked at, namely BYU. It's speculated that if the AAC is poached, Army may be a potential target to be added, joining Navy, as well as a few Conference USA schools. The ACC is always looking for viable candidates and would pounce to become the first super conference of 16. The Big 10 is not looking to expand unless they can acquire their main target, Notre Dame, but a miracle would have to occur for that to happen. The SEC is not looking to expand at this time, but if the ACC gets to 16, both the SEC and Big 10 may follow suit, although that seems unlikely in this round.

If conferences would choose to expand this year, the changes wouldn't take effect until the 2020 seasons.

Temple Ready to Start Season Under New Leadership

The Temple Owls will have a new coach at the helm, but he is familiar with the program. Coach Rice will begin his tenure as head coach after former head coach Matt Rhule took a position with Penn State.

Coach Rice will have a new offense to run under new OC Mike Cassano. Cassano runs a Pro Style offense, but Coach Rice has implemented a few new option plays to utilize.

New DC Jason Young will use a 4-3 defense and will have full control. Coach Rice knows he will do an excellent job calling the defense.

Temple is projected to finish 2nd in the American East behind UCF. The Owls have 2 players on the Preseason All-American list, in Senior Halfback Darius Baker and Senior Strong Safety Matt Sanders.

Temple will kick off the 2018 campaign in Philadelphia against FCS Foe Penn. They look to work out the bugs in the new offense, and be ready for their week 3 matchup against current #19 Syracuse.

With the sudden announcement of Temple Head Coach Matt Rhule accepting a head coaching position at Penn State, that leaves the HC position vacant. Temple decided to hire from within, and offered the HC position to Offensive Coordinator Rice, a 5 year extension that will take him through 2022, with 7 wins each year being the target.

All recruiting will be taken care of by HC Rice. He will use his coordinators playbooks, using coach suggestion and choosing a play. OC Mike Cassano will run a Pro Style Offense with a balanced attack. DC Jason Young will run the 4-3 defense.

It may be a rough start to the season, with an offense set up for the option attack.
