Byrd's Squeeze Bunt Propels Mets Past Jays In Series Opener
TORONTO -- Small ball. The New York Mets used small ball to squeeze past the Blue Jays for their 19th win of the season, with outfielder Marlon Byrd laying down a sacrifice squeeze bunt to score Justin Turner from third base in the seventh inning to give the Mets a 2-1 lead. The Mets would hold on to the lead, with former Blue Jay Frank Francisco pitching a scoreless eighth inning and closer Bobby Parnell netting his second save of the season to preserve the victory for starter Johan Santana (5-0) who went six strong innings, giving up six hits and one run to the quiet Blue Jays offense.
Former Mets catcher Josh Thole (who came to Toronto in the R.A. Dickey trade), singled up the middle in the bottom of the second inning scoring Edwin Encarnacion from third base following his leadoff double and a groundout from Jeff Baker. “I was down in the count and just tried to make contact. [i] got enough of the ball and picked up the RBI.” said Thole.
The Mets got a lucky bounce when Colin Cowgill’s groundball up the middle ricocheted off the second base bag and dribbled into center field, allowing Marlon Byrd to score from second base to tie the game up.
Johan Santana managed to escape a fifth inning jam when he had to face feared Jays slugger Jose Bautista in with the bases loaded and two outs. However, after a nine pitch battle, Santana was able to get Bautista to pop out to second base to end the inning. “I tried to stay in there but just missed [the] pitch and ended up popping out.” said Bautista.
The Blue Jays continue their series at home against the Mets at the Rogers Center tomorrow afternoon with first pitch at 1:05. You can catch the game on Sportsnet Ontario, East, West and Pacific or get your tickets at bluejays.com or call 416-341-1280.

Trade Breakdown: Jays and Angels Swap Outfielders
By Tim Dierkes [May 18, 2013 at 11:15am ET]
Both teams are getting young outfielders that have shown that they have potential. The difference however, may not occur to the simple baseball fan. J.B. Schuck, the player that the Blue Jays are receiving from the Angels, uses speed, a high batting average and a good on-base percentage to succeed. This is almost contrary to Sierra’s method of producing offense. Sierra is more of a hitter with gap-to-gap power, with the ability to pull the ball down the line, resulting in his three home runs this season compared to the zero provided by Shuck. With this said, let’s get to the breakdown of the trade:
Toronto Blue Jays
The Blue Jays are getting a player that is ready to contribute at the MLB level. Schuck has the ability to get on base where he can utilize his speed in order to create run scoring opportunities for his team. His fielding is also about average for someone his age. He has the ability to track down ball and will almost always give it his all on the baseball diamond. Even with his ability to play at the Major League level, he will likely be sent to Triple-A Buffalo for some seasoning with the fact that the Blue Jays roster is full at the moment.
Los Angeles Angels
What the Angels are getting in Moises Sierra is a player who has very good hitting tools as well as high potential to provide offense for the team. Although he has developed very well offensively, he has shown that he needs some more time in the minors to develop his fielding skills. During limited action with the Blue Jays last season, Sierra dropped three balls in the outfield that should have been caught and would have been caught by the outfielding the Angels are sending in, J.B. Schuck.
Blue Jays and Angels Swap Outfielders
By Tim Dierkes [May 18, 2013 at 10:35am ET]
The Toronto Blue Jays and the Los Angeles Angels have announced that they have reached a deal that would see the two teams swapping outfielders. The deal comes after a 2-1 walkoff win for the Blue Jays against their division foes, the New York Yankees. The deal sees 23-year old outfield prospect Moises Sierra headed to the Angels in exchange for 25-year old outfielder J.B. Shuck. Sierra hit .289 with 21 RBIs as well as three homers for Triple-A Buffalo this season. Schuck, who has spent time with both the big league team as well as Triple-A Salt Lake, hit .360 with 21 RBIs most recently in his stint with the Triple-A team. Schuck is known mostly for his speed and outfield ability, whereas Moises Sierra is mostly known for his high potential bat.

Jays Score Two In Ninth For Comeback Win
TORONTO -- Mariano Rivera blew a save. That’s right, arguably one of the best closers in all of baseball blew a save opportunity last night against the Toronto Blue Jays thanks to a solo home run from Rajai Davis in the ninth.
The Yankees took the lead in the top of the seventh inning, with Mark Teixeira doubling to the left-center field gap to score second baseman Robinson Cano, giving the Yankees a 1-0 lead. Alex Rodriguez then came up with boos raining down on him from the Toronto crowd, hitting a fly ball to right fielder Rajai Davis, who was substituting for a tired Jose Bautista. Teixeira, who advanced to third base on a Lyle Overbay groundout, tagged from third in hopes of giving the Yankees a 2-0 lead. Davis had other plans however, as he promptly threw a strike to catcher Josh Thole, who put the tag on Teixeira, ending the inning.
The Blue Jays, who lost the series opener last night thanks to a stellar pitching performance from veteran lefty Andy Pettitte. Much looked the same at the Rogers Center last night, with righty Phil Hughes throwing a no-hitter through six innings against the usually potent offense of the Blue Jays. Then came Brett Lawrie. Lawrie, down one ball, two strikes in the counts, manage to hit a bloop single that would dropped in for the Blue Jays first hit of the ballgame.
Fast-forward to the bottom of the ninth inning, with the Blue Jays down 1-0 and famed closer Mariano Rivera taking the mound. Rajai Davis promptly took a one ball, one strike cutter over the left field fence to tie the game, handing Rivera his first blown save of the season. Rivera, who was visibly shaken by the solo blow, promptly walked speedster Emilio Bonifacio, who leads the MLB in steals with 23 stolen bases. Despite paying close attention Bonifacio at first, Bonifacio managed to steal second before rookie outfielder Anthony Gose grounded out, moving Bonifacio to third. Jose Reyes hit a sacrifice fly on the very first pitch he saw in the at-bat, providing the Blue Jays with a walkoff win.

AL East Notes: Hellickson, Yankees
By Tim Dierkes [May 15, 2012 at 8:35am ET]
Just before the Toronto Blue Jays open their home series against the New York Yankees, Tim Dierkes takes a look at some of the American League East rumours.
- Ken Rothensal of ESPN reports that the Blue Jays could be seeking to add another outfielder following the injuries to both Melky Cabrera and youngster Anthony Gose. Rothensal also points out that they will most likely be looking at someone that they could possibly move once the two outfielders come back from their injuries.
- With speedy outfielder Brett Gardner doing well in his rehab assignment in Triple-A Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, the Yankees are looking to send one of their outfielders to Triple-A. However, none of their current outfielders (Brennan Boesch, Vernon Wells, Curtis Granderson, Ichiro) have any options remaining on their contracts. This means that they will likely have to pass either Boesch or Wells through waivers, where a team in need of outfielders, such as the Blue Jays could pick them up.
- There have been many reports that the Blue Jays are looking at Rays starting pitcher Jeremy Hellickson to help out in a rotation that currently features two unproven starters with Brandon Morrow on the 15-day disabled list.

Bringing Out The Brooms; Jays Sweep Rays At Home
TORONTO -- The wait is over. The Toronto Blue Jays finally swept the Rays at home at the Rogers Center last night, edging the last place team by a narrow score of 5-4. The Tampa Bay Rays got off to a fast start against rookie Drew Hutchison, who was shooting for his second win of the season since being called up from Triple-A Buffalo.Following a single by Ben Zobrist to lead off the ballgame for the Rays, former Blue Jays shortstop Yunel Escobar quickly gave the Rays a 1-0 lead with a double down the right field line that would easily score Zobrist from second base. After star third baseman Evan Longoria struck out for the first out of the inning, veteran Luke Scott would hit the third Rays double of the inning to score Escobar from second for a 2-0 lead. With Scott at second base, Hutchison would proceed to settle down and strikeout outfielders Matt Joyce and Desmond Jennings.
All this would happen before rookie Matt Moore touched the mound. Moore (2-4), had hopes of picking up his third win of the season. However, the Blue Jays had other plans. Leadoff man and speedster Emilio Bonifacio would single to start the inning for the Jays. Bonifacio would then use his speed and aggressively steal second base and third base with Brett Lawrie up to bat. Lawrie would then hit a hard ground ball that hit off of a diving Evan Longoria’s glove for a single that would score Bonifacio from third base to cut the lead in half. “I was kinda expecting Boni [Bonifacio] to take off for second during my AB [at-bat]. I really didn’t think that he’d take third though. Everything worked out great for us I guess.” said Lawrie about the play after the game.
Things did work out great for the Jays as Brett Lawrie would steal second base on a curveball that bounced on the plate from Moore. With star slugger Jose Bautista batting, Lawrie held his ground at second base, only to watch the slugger pop out in foul territory, making the first out of the inning. Fellow slugger Edwin Encarnacion would pick up his teammate though, singling up the middle on the first pitch he saw to score Lawrie and tie the game up at 2-2. The Jays weren’t done there though, as Jeff Baker hit a slow roller to the pitcher that should have ended the inning with two outs, however, Moore threw the ball past first baseman Luke Scott allowing Encarnacion to score from second base and Jeff Baker to move into second base.
Things would stay the same heading into the bottom of the third inning, with Bautista to lead off for the Jays followed by Encarnacion. Bautista would draw a walk off of Moore, who seemed unfocused. Encarnacion would make Moore pay for the walk as he hit his ninth homerun of the season on Moore’s 53rd pitch of the game, 28 which came in the first inning. The Rays would try to make a comeback when Ben Zobrist doubled in the fourth inning off of Hutchison that scored two runs. But that was as close as they would get as Hutchison would shut down the Rays until the sixth inning, where Steve Delabar would come on and strikeout the side. Casey Janssen pitched a scoreless ninth inning and picked up his 15th save of the season.
The Blue Jays stay at home to take on the New York Yankees in another quick two game set. The Yankees trail the Blue Jays by one game in the American League East standings.

We had a pretty dominant game, with Nazem Kadri getting two goals in the win. One of his goals was off of a breakaway in which he netted his own rebound for the goal. Derek Roy's goal was not to be blamed on the goalie James Reimer. Roy tipped the Dan Hamhuis shot pass Reimer for the first goal.

We headed down to the minors to have a look at some of our young prospects, most notably starting pitcher Aaron Sanchez, outfielder Jacob Anderson and center fielder Evan Chambers, whom we signed out of the free agent market a month ago. We're in town just in time to catch Sanchez make his start with the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats against former top pitching prospect Noah Syndergaard and the Binghamton Mets.

The Fisher Cats played well, getting Sanchez the victory. It seems that all the pieces of the R.A. Dickey trade have not panned out, with Syndergaard giving up six hits and two runs in five innings, taking the loss. However, we did notice somethings about the young guys that we came down here to watch...
Aaron Sanchez: Good break on his curve ball, fastball topping out at 97mph on the night, lots of balls hit to the warning track. 71 pitches.
Jacob Anderson: Shows some decent speed as well as the ability to pull the ball down the left field line. Great range in the outfield.
Evan Chambers: Decent speed from the lead off position and good contact.

Jays Best Division Foes
TORONTO -- Back at home after a lengthy road trip to Los Angeles, Oakland and Minnesota, the Toronto Blue Jays showed that all the travel had no effect on their play, as they beat their division rival Tampa Bay Rays 5-3. Jeff Baker got the Blue Jays off to a great start as Colby Rasmus started off the bottom of the second inning with a triple, followed by a double by Baker into center field to give R.A. Dickey and the Jays a quick 1-0 lead. The Rays weren’t inclined to give up so quickly, as fan favorite third baseman Evan Longoria hit a towering two run home run that would give the Rays a 2-1 lead. “My knuckleball just kinda flattened out.” said Dickey about the home run after the game. The Blue Jays would get right back on offense, with Edwin Encarnacion hitting a homerun with Jose Bautista on base following a leadoff single. With his team up 3-2, Dickey held the lead the remainder of his start, lasting seven innings and accumulating five strikeouts while allowing eight hits.
The Blue Jays added one run on a home run from an unlikely source. Speedster Emilio Bonifacio hit his first homerun of the season, giving the Jays the 4-2 edge in the bottom of the seventh inning. In the eighth inning, Blue Jays reliever Steve Delabar gave up his first earned run of the season when he gave up a line drive single into center field off the bat of veteran Luke Scott that would score rookie phenom Wil Myers from second base to cut the lead to 5-3.
That would be as close as the Rays would get though as Darren Oliver would come on to shutdown the eighth inning, followed by closer Casey Janssen, who would notch his 14th save of the season.
