So, yeah... I was looking at getting a dog or a cat. Not really for me, but for my daughter. Well, if it's a dog, it will most likely be for me, LOL.
Anyways, was wanting some opinions on the best pets to get. I'm really more interested in a pet that doesn't shed hair so much, but my daughter does want a cat... But she isn't opposed to a dog, just have to make sure it's the right fit. Have any opinions?
Not sure if anyone was aware of it or not, but when browsing the web, I noticed the janus cat. Just google it. Wow, had no idea.

Even though I'm full time now at OS, I still can't find as much time as I want to actually play games! So this leads me to todays QOTD.
QOTD: How many hours per day/week do you spend on gaming?
Happy Birthday to the following OS'ers!

...And Other Miscellaneous Thoughts. For those who didn’t know, I, along with OS Big Boss Steve Noah travelled to EA Canada in Vancouver this past week to grab a sneak peek at FIFA 13. I can’t say much about what I saw, because apparently the EA folks are very serious about having you sign a non-disclosure and then holding you to it. But since I needed something to do on the flight home and also that I’ve been falling woefully short of my OS quota these past few months, I hereby present my sorta-travelogue about my trip to EA Canada.
To start, originally I didn’t need anything to do on my flight home, since I was fully expecting to spend three hours of it catching the Blues-Kings playoffs series on Westjet’s Live TV. What I didn’t expect, however, was that the flight couldn’t pick up half of the channels it was supposed to offer, so I had to choose between watching Canada’s Got Talent or write this. It seems I’ve made the right decision.
…
East, Meet West
The first thing I’ve noticed, as my flight descended into Vancouver, was its landscape. Coming from Toronto— a flat, boring piece of land if there was one— and seeing mountains towering over the coastlines, bridges extending from one shore to another, was, I have to admit, a beautiful and exciting sight.
At least fifteen of my friends have moved out west to Vancouver. Some went there because they had a job lined up, but most did not. Having now been there and experienced the city first hand, I have to say I totally understand. Getting around is a breeze—the city is extremely walkable and public transit is cheap, convenient and sensible. However, I again present the caveat that I come from Toronto, so that may not be saying much. The relaxed west coast vibe—I swear there are more people in Vancouver carrying around yoga mats than anywhere in the world I’ve been--is indeed alluring. And food... my God, the food. With pigging out being my biggest vice these days, after realizing that cigarettes and alcohol were way too costly, I’ve found at least four wonderful places to eat in my short time here. Basically, Vancouver really is a wonderful city in every aspect of the word.
Would I go there and stay there? I've asked myself plenty of times ever since arriving there, but the answer has always been thanks, but no thanks. I like my UV rays. It was fine for my three days there, but spending perpetual eternity under a forecast of light rain will drive me absolutely insane.
Kelvin, Meet Steve
It probably won’t come as a surprise to most of you, but for those who may not know, Operation Sports is not a centralized operation. Geographically speaking, anyway. We the writers are, instead, spread out all over North America, communicating via the internet.
In Vancouver, I met the legend that is Steve Noah. I’ll be completely honest, I did have thoughts that Steve may have been indeed just an urban legend whose name is used by everybody to post here. After all, who the hell has the ability to get up every morning (check the timestamp on his posts) at 5? But no, I can finally confirm that it’s true—Steve exists. And he’s a pretty cool guy too, as we bonded over our newfound love of Japadogs. I am also proud to say that when we had some down time at the EA Sports headquarters and played some Euro 2012, I beat him two matches to one. Though in hindsight, I think I probably should have thrown the games. Folks, if you don’t see any of my articles here again, you’ll know why. (And no, smartass, it’s not because I write poorly. Though it may be a contributing factor—I’m not ruling it out.)
And just in case Steve is reading this, may I suggest an annual staff barbecue, somewhere on the continent? I’m thinking Hawaii, but Puerto Rico would suffice… I guess.
Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that while 95% of working as a writer on OS is fun, from time to time you still unwittingly fall into the trap where you begin to wonder what exactly is the point of writing about video games. But then you meet Steve, who just exudes so much enthusiasm about every aspect of it, even with soccer, which he wasn’t particularly interested in (me schooling him in Euro probably didn’t help change his mind). And then you get it—it’s a passion. And it’s infectious, listening to him talk about OS and how it grew from a little community to the large, passionate group that it is today… then it starts to make sense all over again.
Press, Meet EA Sports
It’s my first time (a phrase that I realize, being so not 18 anymore, I have to use way too much). I’ve never been to any of these press things before, and to be honest, I didn’t know what to expect. As much as I looked forward to the trip and getting a preview of FIFA 13, the prospect of this entire journey still seemed pretty unnerving. Remember, I’m a gamer and a writer— that’s about sixteen kinds of reclusiveness. Anyway, I didn’t know what to expect. Was it going to be incredibly stuffy and formal? Or was it going to be so unstructured that I’ll be left in the lobby playing NHL 07 on a PS2 while everybody else is off looking for scoops?
It turns out I was worrying about nothing. Say what you will about EA, but they do know how to manage one of these things. I’d like to use this space to say thanks to the PR folks for being incredibly on the ball for every aspect of this trip—they do try their best at making you feel comfortable. As we were transported to their headquarters in Burnaby, the thirty or so of us were led to a presentation room (picture your typical college lecture hall, but much nicer, and without the stench of leftover Big Macs), as the devs went into detail about the features of this year’s FIFA. After the session, we were divided into groups and toured the entire EA complex (a stunningly designed place that spans two city blocks), their motion capture studio, and then we interviewed FIFA’s producers. The interview part, which lasted a little shorter than I had hoped, was more of an informal chat—which is great—as we just talked about the new features they’ve just presented over coffee and sandwiches. It definitely wasn't anywhere near as adversarial as I pictured it could've been, even as I expressed concerns at some old FIFA problems and some of the new features. When you boil it all down, it's just really two passionate gamers talking about what they liked and didn't like. Nothing personal, at all.
…
So again, thanks to the EA folks who put this together. Not only did I get a glimpse of FIFA (fans of the series should get ready… there’s plenty to be optimistic about), but I also got an extra trip to a great city. But conspiracy theorists, don’t put your tinfoil hats on just yet, this won’t affect my editorial judgment because a) I have a very short memory, so by the time FIFA rolls around I probably won't remember much of this trip, and b) as my ex-girlfriends and ex-bosses have told me, I’m just not a very decent human being.
Having said that, however, I also have to say this: It’s easy to picture EA-- the corporate entity-- as the evil Bond villain stroking his cat and counting his money. But if nothing else, the tour showed that at the end of the day, the people who have everyday involvement with these games are still just people who really, really love the sport. While sometimes that may not translate fully into the products they stick their names to, and you can perhaps fault them for not doing their job, but as I came to realize, you can’t fault them for a lack of passion. From the little time I’ve spent there and with the devs, if you don’t love the sport you’re involved with, you won’t last a minute in the place.

And just as a housekeeping note: as May progresses, some of the FIFA stuff should slowly trickle out, so keep checking back on OS!
Today, it begins. My first day as a full time OSer. I'm looking forward to bringing in some new content and many other things in the near future. But for now, the daily Other Stuff makes its return today. I certainly hope you chime in, I'll be checking throughout the day to answer any questions you might have.
The Heat are up 2-0 over the Knicks. Amare will probably be out, after punching a glass casing around a fire extinguisher. I can understand frustration, but handle it without causing bodily injury to yourself, LOL. OKC is up 2-0, but the defending champs have put a scare into them. A total of 4 points have separated both games.
I'm not much of a hockey fan, but the Caps are getting a lot of attention around here, tying the series against the Rangers. I don't follow much of the regular season at all, but when the playoffs start, it's hard not to check it out. I'll be pulling for game 7 overtimes!
If any of these links interest you, talk about them! If you have any to share, please do so.
Dallas Cowboys - Dad was a huge Cowboys fan, so growing up, it was the only team I rooted for.
Detroit Pistons - I didn't get into the NBA until the late 80's, early 90's. Love the hustle of Dennis Rodman and was a fan of the team ever since.
San Francisco Giants - I didn't follow much baseball, but always remember my cousin Greg loved the Giants. He passed away in an automobile accident, almost 30 years ago, at a very young age. I basically took it upon myself to pull for them. Been a fan ever since!
QOTD: Who are your favorite sports teams and why?
Happy Birthday to the following OS'ers!

Hello OSers!
Some of you may know (if you follow me on Twitter), I have some exciting news to share with you today. I'm taking my talents to...
...Not so fast, my friends... Before I get there, I'd like to give you a brief look at the history of OS.
I'm one of those old school sports gamers. There were times I would write stats from games into a notebook. In fact, I actually recorded some games, just to watch them again later. Yes, I was "That Guy". I played season after season, jotting down all sorts of information from games like Atari Baseball, 10 Yard Fight, Tecmo Bowl and every other sports video game you could think of. I would play season after season, holding drafts and keeping track of my own franchises. It was fairly difficult to do, but I had such a great time doing it. Of course, nowadays we have it easy; all of those things are packaged within a game.
I used to collect sports video gaming magazines. Yes, there were some available many years ago. I received them quarterly, read them from cover to cover almost every day and memorized every page. I would diagnose every pixel from every screenshot, getting every detail I could find. While it's funny now, and most of us make fun of it, shoes and sock colors were a big deal to me and it obviously hits close to home with many others. I do enjoy the jokes on the Forums about it.
The magazines I subscribed to went under and I didn't have anything to read until I stumbled upon OS in 1998. I recall hitting the refresh button thousands of times a day, looking for the latest sports gaming news. I wanted to know more about Madden, NBA Live and any other up and coming sports video game.
OS was created on March 10th 1998, but it wasn’t me. All of that credit to Craig Tompkins, Dan Clarke and one other person; I can't recall the name. I noticed the site wasn't updating as frequently as it used to and I didn't want the same thing to happen to my favorite website that happened to my favorite magazines. I started submitting news to Craig for a few months in 2000. He decided to bring me on board that same year. I worked on posting news for a while and Craig brought in a few writers. Jeff Downey was one of those writers and when Craig no longer had the time to update the site like he wanted to, he sold it to him. In time, Jeff ran into the same problem and sold it to me.
I remember when I first took over OS. Getting news on the homepage was never an issue, but the Forums were a different animal. I would post random topics, hoping to get someone to respond. I would promote the Forums on the homepage, literally begging people to register. Months went by and I saw myself responding to... MYSELF. I guess a couple of guys felt sorry for me and started posting. It was me, Clay Shaver and Terry Crouch, for the longest time. We would talk about whatever was on our minds, just to get a conversation going.
Things quickly changed when I received an Xbox XDK (debug kit) from Microsoft. I spent almost 2 years researching, making phone call after phone call, and going back and forth to various agencies with multiple emails. I finally received one, out of the blue; I guess my persistence paid off. Only a few weeks later, OS would grow and keep growing to this day... You see, when I told EA Sports I had an XDK, they sent me final builds of all of their video games, to get word out on the upcoming games. I would post impressions, screenshots, answer questions, anything you could think of, I was all over it and the traffic was mind boggling. In fact, every year since then, we have to upgrade our host servers to keep up with it.
We have gone through many OS redesigns, site changes and forum updates. Many staff members have left OS, some making returns and some making the big time, getting jobs with 2K Sports and EA Sports. I'm so proud of them.
When attending sports video gaming events, I still get chills when OS is mentioned, we have come a long way... Developers and Producers of various sports video games (Madden, NCAA Football, NBA 2K, MLB The Show, just to name a few) post on our site to get ideas, ask for feedback on certain things, check out the latest bugs before and after new patches (title updates) are released and more.
It's crazy how many sports video game sites are available nowadays; doing the same things we have done for years. I'm not mad at em'. Hell, I wish there were more of them. I couldn't possibly find every morsel of sports gaming news on the Internet and I will give credit, where credit is due on the site. It's great to see so many sports gaming sites. Some have specific games in mind and others covering specific sport genres, but all of us have the same goal in mind, to make sports video gaming better.
I've been in the IT field for over 20 years. I've worked on OS, on the side for fun. I really enjoy keeping readers informed on everything related to sports video games, it's just a passion. Sometimes, it felt like a full time job, as I would come home from work and catch up on the latest news, only getting a few hours of sleep every night. There were times (quite a few times actually) where I felt like quitting OS and selling it off. Especially after my daughter was born (she is 10 now, WOW!), but I kept chugging along. I just carved out a little time here and there to dedicate to the site and the rest of it would go to my family.
OS was a very small site when I took over. It has grown considerably, as we now have over 275,000 registered readers and average close to 1 million unique visitors a month.
With all of that said and after careful thought and consideration, I've decided to take my talents to… Operation Sports, FULL TIME! Yes, my dream has finally come true. A job, doing something I have loved doing since middle school. While IT was fun, as well as very challenging, I always looked forward to reading the next blog from EA Sports or 2K Sports on an upcoming video game. While it is a considerable salary decrease, I feel in time, it can lead to bigger and better things, not only for me, but to our loyal OS readers and all sports video gamers from around the world.
News will be covered in more detail, on time and as it happens. I will be able to cover events for OS I never had the time for in the past. I'll be bringing back the daily Morning Other Stuff with QOTD (otherwise known as “What’s Up??” to the old schoolers) and talk about what’s going on in my life. It usually has something to do with gaming, sports, family or whatever is on my mind. For those that don't know about Morning Other Stuff, I certainly hope you respond with what you are up to, check out the morning links and answer the Question of the Day. Think of it as a way to get to know me and for myself to get to know our readers, in a more personal way. I have many plans on making OS even better, hope you enjoy the ride.
I'd like to thank all of the OS readers, all former and current staff members, as well as the Admins and Moderators, including ones that have come and gone (and come back again...) Without you, this would never have been possible. Many readers on OS have their own following. Roster makers, slider guys and just all around helpful contributors are another reason people visit OS. Thanks to all of you!
A big thanks to Shawn Drotar, Clay Shaver, Terry Crouch, Mark Fossen and yes, Brent Doughty. I have shared too much personally with you guys to forget any of you. Hey Rob Lindo! Hope all is well my friend.
Gotta thank Chris Sanner, for being pitiful.
Huge thanks to Matt Holme. We have worked together for quite some time and most people do not really know you. Matt hosted OS for a long time and when times were tough, we partnered up. When OS is acting flaky, he and my main man Diego are always on the ball, getting things back up and running.
A special thank you to my wife, stepson and daughter for dealing with me and understanding what my goal was. There were some tough times, but I'm so grateful everything worked out.
Much love to all of you and much love to sports video games.

Apologies for missing the past couple days, but I return today with glorious links. To start off, the first link on the list is possibly one of the funniest videos I've watched in a while. It's less than 2 minutes, so give it a whirl (Knicks' fans may not like it).
So here you go, seven links (with videos galore!) to get you through hump day:
QOTD: Who's going to be on the Madden cover? Johnson or Newton?

First thing is first, go watch Newton's CAMpaign video.
The premise behind the video is just Cam talking himself up, having some fun and offering a once-in-a-lifetime chance to play him in Madden 12. But the part that intrigued me the most was at the 1:26 minute mark.
Newton challenges Calvin Johnson, the other finalist in the Madden cover vote, to a game of Madden 12. Newton wants to stream it live to the Internet for fans everywhere to follow. He really has a great idea here. What if players determined their lucky chance of getting on the cover?
It would take away from the fun the fans get for voting in the bracket (partially), and it likely would have prevented Peyton Hillis from getting on the cover since his Facebook following wouldn't have meant anything. However, the gains could mean so much more, especially for the likes of ESPN and EA.
First of all, get one representative per team, then have the consumer vote down to eight or 16 participants, or even just the Final Four. After that, EA could host a party featuring all the athletes ready to play in the Madden tournament. Each game would be live streamed, and the final could be broadcasted on ESPN with interviews from developers and other players throughout. If ESPN can make money on The Decision, they can with Madden.
The excitement would beat anything a public, online vote brings. I even thought of a nice slogan to go with it: Vote the gamer, not the player.
What about you? Do you think it would be a good idea having players compete for the cover?
It's Friday, Friday. Gotta get down on Friday.
Are you so excited?

What's the one word all NCAA and Madden lovers have come to hate? If you answered "gimmick," then you've just won yourself bragging rights on the Internet. Nice work, dude.
Gimmicks are the little things that tease us into an overzealous rage of happy emotions; they get us pumped for the next big game. But in the past few years, gamers have been conditioned to understand what truly is a gimmick. Before, gimmicks used to be the tiny little stat overlays on the screen, or last season's amazingly-awesome announcement of implementing dreadlocks into NCAA 12. Talk about authenticity, right?
Which brings me to my question. Now that everyone has figured out the difference between a gimmick and a legitimate feature, how are these companies like EA marketing? They know exactly what we want to see in our football games (e.g., offensive and defensive line interactions and stable Internet connections).
So if the line interaction has been resolved (please, Lord), why not announce that before 430-plus receiving animations? Why are we looking at new pass trajectories? Don't get me wrong, I'm excited for the new features NCAA 13 has announced, but I'm still polarized by the organized release dates for the information.
If in the final EA webcast they announce the new and improved line-play system, everyone will be ecstatic. The hype train would get rolling in a heart beat after two months of hardly any hype. I assume the boost in hype would help sales, which is exactly what EA wants. But if they released the best and/or most important information first, wouldn't that increase the outlook of the game?
During my time at OS I have seen every gamer. I've seen the diehards, loyalists, noobs, franchisers, fakes and casuals. But the ones that stick out the most are the abundant amount of people who have already decided not to buy this year's NCAA or Madden. I guarantee some of these guys still buy the game, but others think that they have the power to change the outcome of future games if they boycott. Sure the buyers largely outnumber the boycotters, but what if all the boycotters still bought the game thanks to better marketing? In the end, EA still makes a boat load of money, but they could make even more.
So I say scrap the gimmicks, push back some new animation information (we get that every year from every game) and tell us all what we want to know. If we know how awesome these game are going to be two months before release rather than two weeks, the hype train would be on its tracks right now.
What do you guys think? Would you rather see the best improvements now, or later?
One step closer to that weekend, ladies and gents.

After purchasing MLB The Show and NCAA Football in 2011 I swore I wouldn't buy either version in 2012.
Interestingly enough the decision was based on two opposite perceptions, but now I find myself doing an about-face because of two crucial gameplay improvements.
With MLB 11: The Show I decided the game was good enough to survive two cycles. I wanted to save my cash. Then a little concept called ball physics came along and changed my world. Not only was the addition of ball physics something I'd hoped for in a long time, but SCEA pulled it off with flying colors.
NCAA Football, on the other hand, was so horribly flawed in the realm of gameplay that I sold my copy after only a couple weeks of playing. The only thing, in my mind, that could ever make me want to buy another NCAA game was if they incorporated read-and-react defensive AI.
Naturally I assumed that would never happen for years to come and naturally my pleading has correlated with EA Sports adding read-and-react defense (how accurately is yet to be seen).
In three months I may be $120 lighter in my pockets than I promised myself a year ago. But, if NCAA can deliver in substance as The Show did with ball physics, I'll consider it a success.
Stampeding buffaloes and flaming spears may get the masses excited, but nothing sells a game for me like realistic gameplay.

Sorry about missing the couple days ladies and gentlemen. I got swamped in my efforts of bringing back the Seattle Supersonics.
But yesterday was a big day for football news, both reality and gaming. The new NFL schedule has been released (with a questionable bye week for the Saints) and we saw our first footage of NCAA 13. Links are below, as well as other random forms of entertainment for you to enjoy!

People have been asking for it for a few years now, but it has never happened. But now, at the end of this console generation, it seems that EA Sports is borrowing a page from 2K Sports.
The announcement that Oklahoma State halfback Barry Sanders is joining Robert Griffin III on the cover is the final piece of this EA/2K puzzle.
Sanders won the Heisman in '88 -- in case you missed out, it's 2012. EA is bringing in the Heisman Challenge, which sounds like it will more than likely be similar to what we have seen the past couple year in NBA 2K games (Madden Moments don't count).
Enter The Heisman Challenge. It what seems to be the main focus of NCAA 13, The Heisman Challenge will be a draw to us all. However, we have no idea what this challenge is yet, so some should be wary not to get your hopes up.
The Heisman Challenge will likely be single-game achievements, but there is also the chance of taking in these old players and putting them in your dynasty. It isn't likely, but the thought that it could happen is enticing enough. Imagine taking the field in the Red River Shootout as Doug Flutie runs out wearing the burnt orange? That would be awesome. What if you could recruit Sanders to the Pacific Northwest and have him strap on some Oregon gear? That would add a whole new level for college football junkies.
Besides Flutie and Sanders, there will be plenty of legendary options in NCAA 13. I'm assuming that all players in the tournament will be playable, though. Which means we have Flutie, Sanders, Herschel Walker, Andre Ward, Eddie George, Desmond Howard, Marcus Allen, Charlie Ward, Tim Tebow, Mark Ingram and Matt Leinart confirmed.
It's all wishful thinking right now. But with EA seemingly wanting to put the same smile on our faces that 2K does, we could see some interesting competition the next couple years with us reaping the benefits as early as July.
Heh. Oh, well. Here's to hoping.
