Chase Headley hit a go-ahead home run in the top of the 9th, to lead the Yankees over the Rays 4-2. For Headley it was his 6th home run in the first 12 games of the season. Batting in the leadoff spot for the first time this year, because both Brett Gardner and Jacoby Ellsbury were off, Headley saved a game that was in question all night.
After Didi Gregorius had hit a 2-run home run in the top of the 4th, the Rays tied the game up in the bottom of the inning when Rivera doubled home Kiermaier and Loney.
The score would remain tied at 2 until Headley's homer in the 9th.
C.C. Sabathia pitched 7 good innings, giving up only 5 hits, but walking 4 others, and allowing 2 runs.
With the win, the Yankees move to 8-4 to lead the AL East by 1 1/2 over the Rays. The Rays drop to 7-6.

The Yankees lost 4-2 tonight to the Baltimore Orioles. Down 4-1 entering the 7th inning, Brett Gardner closed the gap with an RBI single, scoring Chris Young. After Chase Headley walked to load the bases with two out, Mark Teixeira worked the count full, but harmlessly popped out to third to end the threat.
The Yanks would threaten again in the 8th. Carlos Beltran and Alex Rodriguez led off the inning with walks. After Brian McCann popped out, the manager made a couple of questionable decisions that may have cost the team. With right-hander Webb on the mound, Chris Young (also a righty) was due up. Despite hot-hitting Jacoby Ellsbury sitting on the bench, he chose to let Young hit, who promptly struck out. After Stephen Drew walked (also a righty with lefty Didi Gregorius on the bench), Brendan Ryan flied out to end the bases loaded threat.
In the ninth inning, Brett Gardner led off with a double to left center. After Chase Headley was called out on strikes, Mark Teixeira walked, putting the tying run on base. Carlos Beltran nearly ended the game on a ground ball to 2nd, but he was barely able to beat the throw after Teixeira was forced out at second. Alex Rodriguez would end the game when he harmlessly flied out to right.
With the loss, the Yankees fall to 6-3, but still lead the Orioles and Rays by a game in the AL East.

The Yankees plated a run in the top of the 9th to break a 2-2 tie. Carlos Beltran led off the frame with a double to center field on a line shot into the gap. After Teixeira flied out to left, the manager pinch hit for Chris Young for Brett Gardner. Gardner was able to advance the runner to third on a ground out to first. The manager pinch hit again removing Austin Romine in favor of Brian McCann. McCann delivered with a single to right that plated the game winner.
Michael Pineda (1-0) pitched 6 1/3 strong innings, scattering 6 hits and 2 runs. Jared Burton & Andrew Miller pitched 2 2/3 innings without allowing a base runner and striking out 5 of the 8 batters they faced.
With the win, the Yankees move to 6-2, 2 games ahead of the Orioles, Blue Jays and Rays. The Orioles drop to 4-4.

The Yankees won today thanks to the late heroics of Alex Rodriguez who hit a 2-out, 2-run walkoff home run off Koji Uehara to scrape out a win 8-7, in a game they should not have to sweat over. Yet again Yankee pitching struggled late in the game.
After 6 innings of work and only 73 pitches, starter Nathan Eovaldi was sent out to start the seventh. A leadoff homer run and two walk later, he was pulled from the game in favor of Andrew Miller. He was worse. He did not retire any of the 3 batters he faced and allowed 3 more runs to score. Now ahead only 7-6, David Carpenter was sent in with no one out and runners on the corners. 2 hits (a deflected groundball off of Carpenter's leg) and a perfect bunt tied the game and loaded the bases with still no one out. With it looking bleak, Carpenter was able to retire the side without any further damage, 7-7.
Carpenter remained in the game into the ninth. After striking out Castillo, Betts tripled into right center. Jose Ramirez came in to try to keep the game tied, but surrendered a sacrifice fly to put Boston ahead 8-7 going into the bottom of the ninth.
In the bottom of the inning, Beltran was called out strikes, followed by an single to left by Teixeira and a lineout to third by Gregorius before Rodriguez saved the game with his shot just over the 318 sign in the left field corner.
With the win, the Yankees move to 3-2, 1 game behind division leading Baltimore.
Masahiro Tanaka is slated to make his return tomorrow after being cleared by doctors earlier in the day.

The game looked to be competitive when it was 1-1 through 5 innings, but starter Chris Capuano walked 3 and gave up a hit and 1 run before recording an out in the 6th when the bullpen was called.
They didn't fare much better.
While Jared Burton did an admirable job allowing only 1 run to score in a bases loaded no out jam in the 6th, he surrendered 2 singles to start the 7th and gave way to Jim Miller who allowed 3 hits, a walk and 3 runs (2 inherited) to score, before he was relieved by Adam Warren.
Warren gave up a RBI single to Shane Victorino to close out the scoring, but the damage had been done.
With the loss the Yankees drop to 2-2, 1 game behind the division leading Red Sox and Orioles. Nathan Eovaldi is expected to start against Joe Kelly tomorrow.
The Yankees are considering moving a starting pitcher up from AAA if Masahiro Tanaka is unable to make his scheduled start on Sunday. They may run into some trouble however as the top 3 starters for the Railriders will be unavailable to pitch. The likely candidate should this situation arise appears to be to call up Chase Whitley for the spot start and send down struggling reliever, Jim Miller who won the job in spring training but in his 2 appearances, giving up 5 hits, 2 walks and 3 earned runs in his 1 inning of work. He has only retired 3 of the 10 batters he's faced so far this season.

The Yankees (2-1) scored early and often, but were forced to hang on for dear life to scratch out a win. Ahead 8-1 after 3 innings, The Bombers gave up 3 in the top of the fourth thanks to a 3-run home run by Russell Martin.
Up 11-5 with one out in the top of the 7th, SP Michael Pineda was pulled after walking 2 consecutive batters. His replacement, RP Jared Burton promptly gave up a home run to 3B Jamie Donaldson to cut the gap to 11-8.
CP Dellin Betances didn't show much either. Called upon in the 9th to hold the 3 run lead, Encarnacion grounded out, but 3 consecutive singles by Donaldson, Navarro and Martin plated a run and put the tying run on base. Betances luckily induced a game-ending 4-6-3 double play.
In injury news, Brett Gardner (black eye) and Stephen Drew (strained tricep) are expected to miss a few days. Neither are expected to be put on the DL.
With the win, the Yankees move to 2-1 and are tied for the division lead with the Orioles and Red Sox.

The Toronto Blue Jays (1-1) scored early and often in an 8-4 blowout over the Yankees today. Encarnacion started the scoring in the top of the 1st with a 3-run homer to left off starter C.C. Sabathia. This wouldn't be the only inning Sabathia struggled in the game.
The Yankees tried to claw their way back into the game in the bottom of the inning, scoring 2 runs on singles and stolen bases from Jacoby Ellsbury and Brett Gardner (who drove in Ellsbury) and a sacrifice fly to deep left fiels by Brian McCann that plated Brett Gardner all the way from 2nd base.
In the top of the fifth, with Reyes on first and 2 out, the Blue Jays rallied to score 4 runs on a walk by Encarnacion, followed by and RBI single by Donaldson and a 3-run home run by Valencia before Sabathia was removed from the game in favor of rookie RP Jim Miller.
The Yankees never recovered although a couple of late solo home runs by Chase Headley and Didi Gregorius were a promising offensive sign, the Yankees never get closer than a 4 run deficit. Both teams are now 1-1 going into the final game of the series. Michael Pineda is slated to pitch against Aaron Sanchez in the rubber game tomorrow.

The New York Yankees won the opening game at home against the Blue Jays 5-3. Carlos Beltran got off to a hot start, after a pedestrian spring (.173/.259/.269) with a 2 run home run in the first inning.
In the fourth inning, the Yanks went up 3-0. After Chase Headley grounded to center for a single with one out, Alex Rodriguez doubled to center, moving Headley to third. Brian McCann was then intentionally walked to load the bases in order to pitch to light hitting Didi Gregorius. Gregorius promptly dribbled a ground ball just out of the reach of the second baseman driving in Headley to move the Yankee lead to 3-0.
The Blue Jays tied the game in top of the 5th, on a leadoff walk by Navarro, followed by back to back homers from Martin and Saunders. 2 pitches later, SP Masahiro Tanaka was removed from the game with an oblique injury. It's not expected for Tanaka to be moved to the DL, but may have to skip a start.
In 3 innings of relief, Jose Ramirez performed admirably, surrendering 3 hits and striking out 3.
The Yanks broke the tie in the bottom of the 7th when Gregorius led off with a single to center. After Stephen Drew was called out on strikes (his 3rd strikeout of the game), Jacoby Ellsbury doubled to right. Brett Gardner was intentionally walked to get to Mark Teixeira. Teixeira (as Gregorius had done in the 4th) destroyed the strategy by doubling over the center fielder's head scoring Ellsbury & Gregorius.
With the win the Yankees are 1-0, the loss drops Toronto to 0-1.

The Yankees scored all 4 of their runs in the first 2 innings, but it was more than enough to hold off the Phillies today.
C.C. Sabathia had a nice first start of spring training,
pitching into the 3rd inning giving up only 2 hits and 1 earned run.
Alex Rodriguez is off to a hot spring with 3 hits in his first 5 at bats. Rodriguez scored in the first and drove in another run in the second. With the win, the Yankees move to 1-1 in Spring Training.
The Yankees are likely to make some moves on their 40 man roster in the coming days, as they look to fill out their roster. The manager said in the postgame, "We've got some weakness at the bottom of our roster, but we think we've got some guys in our system that might be better suited at the big league level, even if it's only in March."

Opening Night of MLB The Show and my dynasty begins. I'm using the default roster and play only manage mode only (which to this point looks like it might be a mistake, as I'll explain).
The Yankees came back from a 2 run deficit in the eighth to tie it, on a Chris Young home run, only to lose the lead in the bottom of the inning when Esmil Rogers gave up 2 hits and a squeeze play to give the Phillies a late 4-3 lead.
The Yankees struck back, however, in the top of the 9th. Down to their last out, with no one on base, Didi Gregorius singled to center, and scored when pinch hitter John Ryan Murphy doubled to left. Luis Martinez then singled to put men on the corners, but Alex Rodriguez grounded weakly to the pitcher to end the threat.
The game would remain tied at 4 until the bottom of the 11th inning when Rupp led off the inning with a single to center. Nelson then bunted for a single on a sacrifice attempt. Nelson bunted down the first base line, but 2B Cole Figueroa was late covering and Garrett Jones awkwardly held the ball despite actually being able to tag the runner. Sizemore then walked to load the bases, and the winning run scored on the second CPU squeeze play of the game. Admittedly, I was a bit frustrated with the outcome, but I'm wondering if there's a huge hole in the bunt defense AI.
