Super Mega Baseball REVIEW

Super Mega Baseball Review (PS4)

If you’re an older sports gamer, than you probably have fond memories of past baseball games such as Ken Griffey Jr.’s Winning Run, R.B.I Baseball (Classic version) and Baseball Stars. What do all of these games have in common? Well, that would be a simple, engaging, and fun approach to America’s past time. While games like this are a rarity these days, the ambitious developer, Metalhead, aims to bring a small piece of that era back, with Super Mega Baseball. Did they succeed?

GAMEPLAY

As with any sports game the gameplay is incredibly important, even for the an arcade game such as Super Mega Baseball (SMB). If you’re wondering if the gameplay will make you feel the need to blow in the cartridge to make it work again, the answer is yes. In almost every way possible, Super Mega Baseball draws an inspiration from all of the titles mentioned before, and more. The gameplay offers a simple approach, but yet has a certain depth to the strategy required to be successful on the harder levels.

Batting

The hitting interface is once again, you guessed it, simple in its approach. It offers the basic hit X, Square, or O for normal, power, or bunt. If one is inclined to use the analog stick for the same purposes, Metalhead has you covered. Although the approach is simplistic in nature, it does require the user to have a keen eye, and understand the strike zone. If you try and pull an outside pitch, chances are you’re going to hit a weak ground ball to short or third, or throw a lazy popup in the air to the infield. Although an arcade game by nature, the physics that SMB brings to the table is a baseball simulation at its core, and requires a sim style approach to match, unless of course you’re playing on the lower difficulties.

Pitching

As much as we loved the hitting in this game, the pitching interface is one of the finest we have ever been privy to using. If you have ever played the Ken Griffey or Power Pro series, then you will feel right at home. Once you select your pitch, you are then required to place a location reticule in your desired location. After you have done that, a sort of gravitational icon appears and it is incumbent upon you to place that icon as close to the center of your location reticule to achieve full pitch effectiveness. While it may sound a little over the top, trust us when we say it is outstanding, and we hope other baseball titles will make this an option moving forward.

Fielding

The fielding in SMB is similar to the pitching in the fact that once the ball is place, your player will gravitate towards the general direction of where the ball will be landing. Think of it as semi-assisted fielding, but it does give the user the option to take full control to run faster, dive or jump, and throw the ball to the location of choice. The first time you make a diving grab at short, or rob a would-be homerun, it will feel like a well earned accomplishment. The fielding may not be as fun or intuitive as the hitting or pitching, but that doesn’t mean it’s boring, because it’s not.

MODES

This is an area that SMB struggles a bit, as it only offers up two modes: Season and Exhibition. While season mode does give the user the option to choose a season length, difficulty, number of innings, it is simply one season and you’re done. With that said, SMB does offer deep stat tracking, which is a huge plus, and the user can customize each team member, both in looks and namesake, but that’s as deep as the well runs. The stat tracking and customization options are a very nice inclusion (ye,s we are looking at you R.B.I Baseball 14) but for some that are hoping for a career, multiple-season or online league modes, you might be a bit disappointed. We would also be remiss if we didn’t mention that while there is no true online multiplayer in SMB, it does offer couch co-op seasons and exhibition.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Although Super Mega Baseball may not be as deep a game as some are accustomed to, it absolutely shines in the gameplay department. It’s simply an arcade baseball game with simulation roots, that will have one wanting to play it again the minute you stop playing it. If you’re looking for a fun baseball game that you can finish in about 20 minutes to get you through the doldrums of winter, Super Mega Baseball should be perfect for you.

Learning Curve – Not a difficult game, but will require some time to master the pitch and hitting interface.

Control Scheme – Simple and responsive

Visuals – Fun, cartoonish, and over the top – which is perfect for this game

Audio – Timely and accurate, and we love the quirky umpire voice.

Replay Value – Short on modes, and true MP could have added some much needed depth.

Score 7.0 (Good)

From playing the game seems to be tuned for 5 innings of play. The stamina and mojo depletion system do not appear to be stretched out properly for 9 innings of baseball. Having more pitchers would help but there needs to be a re-tune and balance for it.

It's odd that they default you to 5 innings for exhibition but 9 innings for season mode. I played one exhibition at default Ego, won 11-6 with 9 homers combined by the two teams. I kicked the ego up to 40, and started my season.

Just won my first game 4-3 in 16 innings with a walk off single down the first base line. The kind of game that will early make me a huge fan of this game. It's a blast to play, easy to pick up and play, and just has the perfect feel for me with a baseball game. Can't wait to play a full session and keep an eye on stats.

I used all of my relief pitchers in that 16 inning game, but had not dipped into the other two starters yet. Mainly because my starter went 7, and one of my relievers pitched 6 scoreless with one hit in extras.

Downloading the game tonight... can't wait!

Would anyone be interested in a SharePlay tournament or league?

Word of WARNING!!!

if you plan to make a custom team prior to doing a season - don't rename and change all the players first if you want to change the team name. I went with the "WideLoad" team and painstakingly changed the entire roster wanting to rename the team to "Hero's" but all that did was create a new team with the default guys!!!

I'll either just play the season anyway or take pics of everyone and try to mimic it.

My team is awesome though and I have most people looking like B+ some A+ and a couple C- lol

Arnold Schwartz - RF
Sly Stallone - LF
Uma Thurman (kill Bill) -C
Mr. T - 2B
Grace Jones (Conan) -BN/SS
Dolf Lungren -3B
JeanClaude Van Damme -CF
Chuck Norris -RP
Pai Mei -Closer
Bruce Lee -RP
Bruce Willis - 1B
Linda Carter (wonder Woman) -SS
Michael Ironside - SP
Mike Tyson -BN
Usain Bolt -BN/OF
Taxi Driver (deneiro) - SP
Tong Po (kickboxer) - SP

I may be forgetting a player or two... will post a picture later tonight or tomorrow when I get some time, but it's pretty awesome!

now aside from that little warning to make your team name first ... the game is pretty awesome... I started with ego 25, but will move it to 55-65 range where I will probably settle there.

As someone said season mode defaults to 9 innings, not sure if I can change that or need to start a new season.

I wish I could save player types.

I love the look, pace and fun factor of the game. The controls are great too. Takes me back to Great Baseball for the MASTER SYSTEM!

I only played 3 games, 1 of 5 inning and 2 of 9 ... and in the 9 inning my pitcher (ironside) went 6 innings then I brought in Chuck Norris (7th) Bruce Lee (8th) and finished with Pai Mei. At 25 ego I won easily 12-2 but had a blast anyway.

I also worked in almost every bench player because of A - no DH and B - because I wanted to put them in the game. As it gets harder, Bolt and Jones will be great strategically because they are very fast. I got a triple with Jones and a double with Bolt that both never would have been without their speed.

What can I say - I love the game, it's a no-brainer and will go down as a classic for sure. As I've said in other threads this generation for me has been dominated by the 'arcade' titles so far. Lots of originality, fun and great developing.

The customization in this game is great - don't worry about individual ratings because you can develop players and more importantly the variety in the default teams allow you to create a team like I did and give strengths to make sense for the most part to almost every player.

This game also makes sense in a great way that other games may lack. Most games are trying to mimic reality - this game probably because of its art style is free from that, but what happens is that all of the elements within the game makes sense and feel right within itself. That said, there is a ton of hit variety and pitches and is plays a game of baseball that is familiar and doesn't stray too far from the sport.

I'm loving the game. The games are so quick and fun I'm always saying just one more game. Especially to see what I can next do to improve my team.

I didn't even realize you could change the name of the teams.

Also loving that if you buy it you have it for the PS4 and PS3. Probably not a big deal to many, but my health is poor and I am in bed some days, so I have my PS3 in the bedroom for that purpose and having a team going on both systems has been fun.

I played the heck out this game today. Not mad at the purchase at all. I ran with Ego 50 the majority of the time and I'm not generating very much offense at all. The CPU isn't either though, so I might try to keep at it. Looking forward to checking out the season mode tomorrow.

# 69 allBthere @ 12/18/14 12:57 AM
any way to shorten games in season mode to less than 9 innings? I just assumed there was but I can't find it. Running a Season at 44 ego ... did 50 and it was too much right now, 38 was too easy

I think you may be right about the game being tuned for 5 innings. It's a bummer though for those of us who prefer to play 9 innings.

I've been averaging double-digit walks every game in my 9 inning season because the CPU keeps leaving in low mojo/low stamina pitchers.

You basically have to force yourself to swing at off the plate junk to keep from turning these 9 inning games into a parade of walks.

I think they could resolve this issue by:

1) Increasing the size of teams' bullpens.

2) Give teams X number of "mound visits" per game, which would temporarily raise a pitcher's mojo. Three per game seems like a good number?

3) Improve the CPU's decision making when it's clearly time to remove a pitcher from the game due to low mojo/low fatigue.

In the "70 ego" season mode game that I played tonight, the CPU's second relief pitcher (each team only gets two of them) took the mound in the 7th inning. Reliever #2 quickly got into a low mojo/low fatigue state, and proceeded to give up 13 runs over a span of 3 innings, all because the CPU refused to sub in their closing pitcher until the 9th inning:

In the CPU closer's first pitching matchup, he immediately walked in a run, and then responded by beaning the very next batter with a wild pitch (video cuts off before the latter happened).

This is pretty typical for what I'm seeing in most 9 inning games, regardless of how high the difficulty is set -- lots of walks/wild pitches and poor bullpen management from the CPU.

I'm a little over 20 games into my season with the Overdogs and have not have had issue with this. I don't swing at a lot of balls but average a couple of walks per game. I noticed you posting on this issue a day or two ago and had concern so I made sure to keep an eye out for it. Played probably 10 games of my season last night and no similar issues at all. In fact, in my last game the CPU subbed for their starter in the 5th inning while his stamina and mojo were still good. Then in the sixth inning they subbed again, for no apparent reason. Couldn't figure out why this happened especially in light of what you have seen as well at the starting pitcher was cruising against me when he was pulled.

All in all I am seeing fairly appropriate subbing of the CPU pitchers.

I'm playing at a 50 ego but as you have reported the ego most likely doesn't make a difference in this area. Not doubting you at all, what you are seeing could certainly ruin the game, just glad it's not happening to me at this point.

I will continue to watch for this issue and will report back if it pops up in my season. Hopefully it's something that can be patched if it's a widespread issue.

I need to mention that the check swings in this game are SWEET!

Downloaded and played a few games last night. The game lives up to all the hype it's getting. It is so much fun and even though it has an arcade look, it plays realisticly. One word can describe this game- FUN!!

I'm playing at 55 Ego, and I haven't seen it as well. Of course I chase a lot of bad pitches too!

Yeah, I see you and Jyoung on my friends' leader board. Don't think I'll ever be able to break Jyoung's record of 691,000 star points in one game! I threw a perfect game and only received 390,000 or so. Ego makes a difference too, I'm at 50 and Jyoung plays at a higher ego than that thus would get more points for good play. 50 is playing pretty well for me after 25 games or so into my season. I'm like 15-7, going to play out a medium season to see how I fare then move ego up for my next season.

I finally had a decent offensive game. I was a little pissed off when my closer gave up 4 runs in the 5th to let the other team catch back up, but we finished it in the 6th. That was a very fun game.

I played a bit against Hustlin Owl through Shareplay last night as well. That was my first time using the feature since it's been added and I thought it was pretty cool. It's nice to be able to let someone check out a game if they don't have it already.

The devs on Twitter said the first patch will cover bugs and balancing issues, so they seem to be aware of the pitching issues since that was a direct reply to someone commenting on the same being said here. Also they replied to me on a tweet asking about customization for all teams in the future and they are also looking into that as well.

That was my tweet, they answered quickly! Also directed me to a patch 1 forum.

man just pitched a complete game shutout with the overdogs in my season matchup. MAN!! i felt good and nervous but glad my defense held up. my pitcher terrok smith was throwing a gem and boy my stamina was gone by the 9th but the last pitch i threw a meatball below the strike zone and they whiffed. my clean-up hitter rhonda rosey hit bombs 4-6 and a 455 ft hr. i had the chance to get an inside the park home run but i panicked lol. i cant stop
playing this game

Though it needs help in a few areas, (customization, ahem.) I think it's a great value at $20. Especially in a world where a "normal" game would be $60 new, I think $20 for a truly fresh and new game is fair. If you have a buddy with it, share play for a few hours and I'm sure you'll agree
