NHL 18 Wishlist: Features We'd Like To See

It’s almost that time of year again! Before you know it, we’ll be inundated with new information regarding the latest iteration of EA’s long-running hockey series. As we get ever closer to that date, it’s time to get our brains into gear and think about what we’re hoping to see in EA’s upcoming addition to the franchise.

What do we know about NHL 18 so far? Very little. It seems doubtful the Frostbite engine will make its debut, given there's been no indication of its inclusion during EA’s recent earnings conference call.

Here at OS, we’ve always loved creating wishlists for our favorite games, and the NHL series is no exception. I’ve used this opportunity to detail both my own personal desires for NHL 18, as well as including some items found in our forums over the past few months.

Roster sharing, please. EVERY OTHER SPORTS GAME HAS IT, BUT NOT NHL. Why!?

It's been a complaint of mine for years....the crowd noise is just not loud enough. Maybe I'm spoiled by having attended many games at the old Chicago Stadium but that's what got me hooked on NHL hockey. Even the United Center gets awfully loud at times...you just don't get that in this game or any past games for that matter. The crowd needs to erupt when a goal is scored....everything during the playoffs need to pumped up to another level. Adding that kind of excitement to the game would cover a lot of warts over poor AI, uniforms etc.

Roster sharing is an absolute must. Especially since EA's rosters are such trash. I'd also really like the ability to download draft classes in GM mode.

Offline Franchise

* Completely editable and playable. I would like the ability to play every game in my franchise, not only my user team and edit every player in the league. I also would like the opportunity to run a 31 league franchise with the ability to expand the league. Pretty much combine season mode with franchise mode.

* Ticker - in-game on/off users choice and main hub. For in-game it's useful for real-time scores around your franchise especially for bubble playoff teams.

* Start Today Feature for Franchise mode

* Fake or real coaches pool with editable traits/strategies.

* Fake or real GM's pool with editable traits.

* Presentation Screen For Trade Deadline Day - This screen should have an editable clock that you can set it for 20,40, 1hr or OFF. The running clock gives you the added feeling of pressure of making the deal or staying put. The 'Trade Deadline Day' screen should have a ticker for rumors, trades completed, trade block players, standings, etc. When big trades are completed there should be a notification with a "sportscenter" type of jingle..da-na-na da-na-na. You should also be able to access your roster,players in the system,trade block screen, and trade screen from this hub.

* Trade logic - Trades should not be accepted or denied every time on the spot. Teams should be able to mull over a trade request that falls into certain scenarios, for example there are multiple bidders/deals from other teams, or the value in return is slightly in-adequate meaning there is room for negotiation and you aren't hit with a straight up no. This gives the ability for players to play themselves out of a trade if they play well or into a trade. Some trades take weeks of negotiating, with certain factors such as team standings and player performance to push a team to pull the trigger. I would like a screen or email type of screen for "on-going" negotiations.

I really don't care what they do, as long as they use a realistic color palette. Using the Pens in highlighter yellow completely ruins any possible immersion factor. And playing the Rangers in pink and baby blue or the Flyers in dull jack-o-lantern orange isn't any more believable.

for me if roster sharing is not in which should've been out couple years ago then I'm not buying. i have mlb17 the show coming out on tuesday and that keeps me busy all year. mlb is the only game that i play all year long because it is so good and i never get fed up with it. the developers at sds always listen to the fans. what i do with nhl every year is buy the game and play it for like couple days and then never play it again. well not this year.

Ability to edit players names as to create classic rosters.

GM connected with customizable season lengths so we can play shorter seasons therefore completing more seasons! Also custom sliders for our online leagues. I would also like to see customizable season length for offline GM mode too. The ability to play shorter seasons is a must for me. We are having so much fun in our Madden online league this year and would love to be able to do this for hockey too! Bring back GM Connected please.......

Integrate all leagues into GM mode. The create a team feature is worthless without using an imported crest. Should be able to create a league. Do something to cut back on the number of inane own goals.

Other than that, I made a thread recently about all of the improvements I want to see regarding rosters. I would love to see some of those make the cut.

This. The Pens jerseys are so Yellow that it's not even funny. You wear sport gold, not yellow. It drives me nuts as someone who is just genuinely passionate about jerseys. I couldn't imagine being a fan. I'd go nuts.

Trade logic needs to be completely overhauled and should also include a "force trade" option available if users want to make real-life trades in their GM modes.

All leagues available in GM mode

Hire/fire coaches

Sandbox-style GM modes that let us more easily edit league settings (season length, playoff format, ect), rebrand teams, ect. Basically just do what 2K does for NBA 2K

Drop NHL on NBC presentation in favor of generic EA sports presentation (that's well done, obviously)

Seriously, finally, please add bilingual announcers in Montreal and French-only in Quebec City and in applicable rinks throughout the Q

And obviously customizable music and rosters and roster sharing

Career ending injuries might be one people would want a slider or on/off switch for.

Given how random the game's injuries already are, I don't know that I would want Tarasenko getting injured because the AI just plows through everyone when they shoot the puck.

Also, I don't think blood will ever make it in. It adds little to the game, but costs them pretty big when it comes to the game's rating, and how it can be sold overseas.

I play mostly offline franchise, so I'll limit my wishes to this area.

1. CPU need to call timeouts when appropriate. I'm not sure why this has never been put into the game, but it really can't be that difficult, can it? I mean, even it's just a basic scenario of the cpu being down by a goal with under two minutes in the game, and there is a stoppage, just let the cpu call a timeout and put their best line out there.

2. Home team should get the choice to shoot first or last in a shootout. Again, it's a pretty basic NHL rule, but for some reason it's not in the game. 2K had this option years ago and makes it for a much more realistic experience.

3. Trade negotiations and free agent signings need to be overhauled. I would suggest taking a look at 2K8 as a great example of how to do this. No more simply meeting a player's demands, lets have a real negotiation where both sides give and take.
