MLB The Show 17 News Post

As we attempt to wait patiently for March 28 to finally get here so we can dive into MLB The Show 17 ourselves and see how this year’s game measures up, we’ve been treated to the usual series of developer streams in the meantime to whet our appetite ahead of its release. While it may be impossible to gauge the game’s components without actually holding a controller in our hands and feeling how things actually play, that’s not going to stop us from making some snap judgments based on everything that we’ve seen so far. Here are the three best and worst things we’ve noticed in our initial impressions of the highly anticipated release.

Best:
1 Ball physics
2 Ball physics
3 Ball physics

Worst (in no particular order):
1 Still no rotating IL schedules
2 Still several uni omissions/mistakes, including on the steelbook
3 Nothing else really merits inclusion in a third slot for me yet. Will wait to see what's revealed in the last few streams.

Failure to upgrade Franchise in any meaningful way for long-time players would deserve a spot there but I haven't been playing Franchise for a while so I honestly can't complain. I sympathize with others who feel let down in this department though.

Spoiler
So long as MLB does away with closeup shots of their marketable talent, we'll be set!

Seriously though, those caps still look like someone's put gum on the side from afar even if you can't make out the logo. They're an aesthetic disaster, particularly patch caps like those since every side of them now has some kind of branding. The Nascar effect mentioned above is already achieved on those caps.

It took less than a day to implement Retro Mode? That's surprising if true as it looks like a fair bit of work. Fair play to them if that's all it took.

It just sticks in the craw a bit because they regularly trot out the "we're a small studio so we don't have the time and people" excuse for not doing things, yet managed to find time to make the gimmick retro mode. If it didn't take any time then fair enough

I was literally just thinking about something I know it will never happen, but for all games not must sports games.

it would be nice to have two separate game releases. I understand that the world as we know it is not the single player anymore it has become a multiplayer online world. that is where the money is and all that but our single player games have gotten shorter and features are taken away or tweaked in some way.

If there was a way to have two full on games released for all genres one full on fully loaded single player disc and one for all the multiplayer stuff online it would benefit everyone.

Sales would double for game companies and gamers would get everything then want from their games... longer more emmersive games...

because when you split your focus into many different areas and shove them all on one game disc you can't build every aspect of each game as you desire it too be.

this is just my .02 and i have felt this way for a while.. and always will be...

Ken Griffey Jr. baseball type retro mode for a game featuring Ken Griffey Jr. on the cover is a perfect fit. I'll like this mode to go with my rtts.

I can agree with a lot of this but I dont believe sales would double at all. I'm sure there would be some who would buy both version, but probably most (including me) would only buy one.
Put me in the offline camp. The only thing I need from online is the roster vault and any patches SCEA put out lol

Yes if you watch the Retro mode stream they say it only took a day to implement the new mode.

I am really looking forward to the many improvements / additions for 17. I find it interesting how some equate a feature as being bad because of a lack of interest in it.

The only thing I am not enthused about is the art direction on the new OSD's for the pitching mechanics. Actually all the mechanic OSD's need work because their art style lacks a common theme throughout. As the game has matured and developed these have not and their style looks odd with the rest of the game.

That's no different than the Majestic logo, just in a different place. UnderArmour is going to be the new supplier, just like New Era is the supplier of the caps.

If a half-dollar sized logo on a uniform interrupts your ability to "enjoy the game of baseball", then that's completely on you.

Best:

1) MLB network presentation along with the two new men in the booth.

2) Season stats every time the player comes to bat.

3) New faces

Worst:

1) Was hoping for more in regards to franchise.

2) Jersey colours still off.

3) The "early and "late" words that pop up while using meter pitching.

# 54 Cowboy008 @ 03/13/17 05:07 PM
Best

2. Humanity AI
3. New body types

Excited for the ball physics, and hoping- really hoping AI is much better, both team mate (Baserunning) and opponent (Pitcher match ups in games, or playoff series)
still the reason why I bought the PS4, but like many of us OSers...I am old school play every inning franchise person, hate to see it get pushed to the side

# 56 timisone @ 03/13/17 05:59 PM
I was thinking about this more, I am happy with all the changes. As long as we can edit players I am fine. I am just happy to have a baseball game. It's almost scary, if there wasn't the show there would be no baseball game. So I am thankful.

# 57 AKM97 @ 03/13/17 09:18 PM
Best:
Ball physics
Updated RTTS
Updated graphics

Worst:
Retro mode
Redundant franchise mode
Jerseys still don't seem very fluid in game.

# 58 volsfan39 @ 03/14/17 10:10 AM
Based on the information we have now..

Best
Ball Physics
Presentation
Graphic Update

Worst
Retro Mode
1 Franchise Programmer
80 man Dev team on the only baseball title available.

Well, certainly no BB game on the level of The Show but there are the more Arcade style games like RBI Baseball and Super Mega Baseball (which is a surprisingly fun arcade baseball game). Then on the pure simulation side there is Out of The Park Baseball.

# 60 Blzer @ 03/14/17 01:40 PM
I don't think any additions have been "cons" of any sort yet, but some omissions (things that have yet to be included) could fall into that category for sure.

The only thing is I wish that Retro fielding camera would pull all the way up for bombed home runs. Whether it's in HRD or otherwise, upper deck flies probably won't be caught on camera.
